Today's topic was "Cognitive Impairment." As usual, Dr. Ryou was very informative about the disorder while being hilarious!

That slight Asuna fanservice though. :9 . I like how she dodged the question about her age, even after her grandpa's reinforcement.

Hmm funny episode with the way they answered those questions.

I didn't feel the romanticism at the end either though.

Okay, so today we came to the cheery subject of Dementia.

I am happy for the Japanese that they took their old term 痴呆症 and replaced it
with 認知症. But "Dementia" is still the correct term in the English-speaking world
for a category of diseases that make you lose ... well, I'm sure you get the idea.

Their old name for it, 痴呆症, carries connotations of either acting crazy or else
staring off blankly into space.

Their new name for it, 認知症, literally means that you have trouble recognizing
and knowing. So that certainly doesn't sound as bad. In English, it would
translate as "Cognitive Impairment". But Cognitive Impairment is a specific
symptom, and not the name of a disease. You can be cognitively impaired due
to being drunk or high on drugs. Luckily, it reverses the next morning.

I don't think that there are any plans in the English-speaking world to take the
traditional name of "Dementia" and replace it with something like "Cognitive
Impairment Disease". But "Dementia" is certainly an unpleasant-sounding word.

The major thing that they didn't mention is that the vast majority of people with
Dementia turn out to have Alzheimer's Disease. There are several other forms
of Dementia, each of them fairly rare. It certainly totally sucks to be told that
you (or a family member) have Alzheimer's Disease.

I'm sorry, but Asuna's grandpa is pretty adorable, even though it's so sad he has developed dementia (though he might've been quite a character in his prime). My great-grandmother had dementia, and it was awful to watch her slowly deteriorate mentally (though I think she was able to remember my grandmother to the end, I don't recall Grandma ever lamenting over her mother not remembering her face anymore). It's also unfortunately hereditary in my family (from what I was told), though it seems to skip every other generation. So there's that chance my mom will end up developing it within the next few decades.

I'm a bit disappointed with this one as it didn't go into detail about cognitive impairment, but hey, I still learned something.

I'm not convinced that Asuna's grandfather has Dementia. For one thing, we didn't
see the score that he got on the test. Also, the test that they described sounds like
a very simple one, along the lines of the Folstein MMSE test. If they are concerned,
they'll do much more than that before deciding what to do next.

Even if he does show cognitive impairment, the solution to the problem could be as
simple as reducing the number of medications that he is taking. A very frequent
problem for old people like him is that they are given too many different kinds of
drugs for different things. It's called "polypharmacy". The show didn't mention that.

Yes, it's true that cognitive impairment can be due to plain old depression, as they
mentioned. That might be reversed in a number of ways. Try having him go out
to play Mahjong once a week, for instance.

Yes, it's true that, as they mentioned, Schizophrenia causes cognitive impairment.
I don't know whether this is likely or not for Asuna's grandfather, but it sounds
like a less probable suggestion to me, about as plausible as nurses having such
huge exposed boobs.

It is true that some people have information about their likelihood to get certain
forms of Dementia based on their genetics. For example, there are some people
who know that they have a higher probability of getting Alzheimer's disease.
There are other people who know that they have a higher probability of getting
other forms of Dementia. However, the vast majority of people won't have any
warning.

If I understand correctly, Dementia is a big problem in Japan. That is because
they are so healthy in most other ways, so they tend to live a very long time. If
you don't die of cancer, stroke or heart disease, you'll die of something else. Also,
the probability (per year) of coming down with Alzheimer's rapidly increases once
you start to get really old. Therefore, Japan may be faced with a huge crisis in
the future when they have large numbers of people with Alzheimer's who need
expensive care for a long period of time. A relatively small number of younger,
healthier people are going to have to earn the money to pay the bills.

I was a bit confused when they got to the "100 - 7 ..." part, because I thought it was some aside Tokyo Ghoul reference.

Didn't know that was an actual thing they tested you on.

Whenever I think of Asuna I think of the one from SAO. She's popular among the anime Asuna's.

Funny how Dr.Ryou says why not name the common vegetables like carrots.

Me complaining about this show: I'm consistently shocked by how mean-spirited and downright erroneous this show's representation of mental illness is.

While it does do a decent job at explaining what certain forms of mental illnesses are, the show fails to understand that the CAUSE of mental illness of often far less deterministic than it describes.

The show often chalks up certain forms of mental illness to the fault of the individual, which is extremely stupid. Most working professional in the field of psychology understand that affliction & treatment aren't simple A-then-B affairs. This is a poor place to learn about mental disorders, and I urge anyone curious about these topics to do their own research. Heck, Wikipedia is a better source of information than this.

To add insult to injury, the show's "jokes" are often aimed at characters who are victims of illness themselves. It's one thing to lend an air of comedy to a situation to brighten up the mood, and it's another thing to make your subjects (people struggling with illness) the butt of the joke. It's not just insensitive, it's downright stupid and completely misses the point of what the show is trying to do, which is to demystify mental illness, paint victims in an empathetic light, & educate viewers about this increasingly common occurrence in our society.

While it is admirable that this show even tries to illuminate the complexities of mental illness & how it affects people, it totally fails to achieve these goals thanks to it's insensitive handling of the topic.

heh, idk how these ppl came out with the idea of making content about mental illnesses+comedy i mean the subject per se is very sad, we know more than one of our relatives suffered from it... i should expect nothing from a manga that got published in Young King Magazine, where there are usually black humor and hentai content xD now everything makes sense!
