Years after the end of the Dragonball GT, the story continues in this special with Son Goku's now eldery granddaughter Pan, and a new generation of super saiyajins, the great-great-grandsons of Goku and Vegeta
100 years after the end of DBGT, all the heroes of Earth have died...except for Pan, the granddaughter of Son Goku. Pan has a grandchild named Goku Jr. However, he does not have the bravery of his great-great-grandfather. Pan suffurs a heart attack, and Goku Jr. believes that he might be able to save her with the power of the 4 star Dragon Ball. Along with the school bully, he tries to find the ball...and unleashes his hidden bravery and power.

A very good coda of the perfect ending of the masterpiece with a capital M going by the name of Kamen Rider Geats...sorry, I mean Dragon Ball GT (because yes, the DB Super and Daima animator and Kamen Rider writer Yuya Takahashi copied 1:1 the ending of Dragon Ball GT in KR Geats, in case you're wondering. Both of which are Masterpieces of the same kind) which is very entertaining, well written and on the point with the previous DB iterations, particularly what the older version of my main waifu (main waifu in Loli form ONLY) Pan says to the torch bearer of Son Goku's ... legacy is very reminescent of what the main protagonist of the entire IP experienced in DBZ. The animation is good, the OST is good, the voice acting by Masako Nozawa and all the other seiyuus is great as usual, there's not really much to complain except maybe that is not 100% as good as the main series, but still highly recommended nonetheless and it's better, more entertaining and more emotional than a whole slew of crappy DBZ movies by a mile.
Recommended as a companion of episode 20 of the indonesian Kamen Rider Black mixed with Choujin Sentai Jetman...errrrr, Bima Satria Garuda, which I'm currently marathoning. Episode that has the same theme of conquering your fears at the base of this TV special.

Dragon Ball GT Special Goku Jr is for some reason advertised or sold as a movie in some countries. It's a story taking place 100 years in the future after Baby's defeat and focuses on Pan's grandson Goku Jr. A timid boy who gets bullied at school and can't defend himself for shit.
One day Pan gets ill to a dangerous degree and is hospitalized to the point he builds up courage to hunt for a Dragon Ball which suppose to be on Mount Paozu.
On his way he and one of his bullies have to overcome challenges such escaping from witch.

It is very adventure focused ... and about learning independently. Goku Jr has not only learn to overcome his fears but also stop believing everyone.

Puck may be an interesting character for the story but not someone who would want to see when you watch Dragon Ball. While he is Goku Jr's bully, he admires Pan. When he saw Goku Jr overcome his fear in one scene, he felt like helping him out with life advices. Those making him more than just a kid who uses his power to get what he wants.

The enemies aren't very striking and more comic relief. Mamba is a crafty witch. Her henchmen have personality but are rather forgettable since they don't do much.

During the special, Goku also awakens some weird power from time to time like any hybrid Saiyan. There is a certain mystery around it that may let you guess what is going on and at some point it seems like he is a completely different person. Depending on how you take it, it can ruin you the experience or not.
While the final fight isn't anything impressive after what we have seen so far, it has some satisfaction.

Animation and music is great. The quality does fit the movie standard and I did enjoy quiet a bit of it.

Criticism is probably for people who this movie isn't for. This isn't your average Dragon Ball Special with a slice of life story or action packed continuation with people fighting using planet scattering punches. Especially since the final bad guy can be held at bay by an adult bear. Even compared to someone like Tao Pai Pai they don't feel like a threat.
While there is comedy, it isn't the type of humor you are used to from Dragon Ball, Z or GT. And if so, they aren't funny to the level you would look back at the jokes with Master Roshi or Oolong. Nor are the characters as oblivious nor live under a rock like Goku at the start of the franchise.
And the final antagonist is some generic badguy that appears out of nowhere as a final boss taking away from the challenge to beat Mamba and her goons.
Lastly the ending is kinda making this adventure feel pointless, unless you see it as a reward for Goku Jr overcoming his fear and the mystical things happening when he finds the 4-Star Dragon Ball.

Overall, it is a good movie for what it is. But if you want high stake fights and clashes that blow up the environment, or the clash between ideas of characters... probably skip this.

It didn't win me over enough for me to recommend it.

The idea of ​​bringing Pan's grandson as the protagonist might sound interesting to some people, especially those who like to see new generations taking center stage. However, for me, it simply didn't work. I found the premise bland, lacking impact, and completely devoid of the charisma needed to sustain something bearing the Dragon Ball name. If it were just a random special, something made to fill space or to commemorate a specific date, it might even work. But as part of something that tries to position itself within the main universe, it's impossible. I don't ... find anything truly innovative here; in fact, the feeling is quite the opposite: an almost literal repetition of the beginning of classic Dragon Ball. Even the fact that Pan's grandson has the same name as Goku reinforces this feeling of recycling, as if they decided to copy the original structure without adding anything new.

The animation, on the other hand, is good and fulfills its role without compromising. It's competent, works visually, and technically, there's nothing that really detracts from the experience. But, at the same time, it doesn't save the rest. It's like a beautifully presented but tasteless dish: pretty to look at, but unable to compensate for the lack of content that truly captivates the viewer.

In the end, my relationship with classic Dragon Ball was never the best, and since this is practically a blatant copy of that phase of the series, it was inevitable that I wouldn't like it. My final score is a 5 — and, honestly, it's only not lower because, being short and lacking a great villain or a complex plot, it ends up working as extra content to pass the time. Even so, while it's watchable without suffering, I don't recommend it. In my eyes, this simply isn't Dragon Ball.

Não me comprou o suficiente para eu recomendar.

A ideia de trazer o neto da Pan como protagonista poderia até soar interessante para algumas pessoas, especialmente para quem gosta de ver novas gerações assumindo o centro da história. No entanto, para mim, isso simplesmente não funcionou. Achei a proposta sem graça, sem impacto e totalmente sem o carisma necessário para sustentar algo que carregue o nome Dragon Ball. Se fosse apenas um especial aleatório, algo feito para preencher espaço ou para comemorar alguma data específica, talvez até funcionasse. Mas como parte de algo que tenta se posicionar dentro do universo principal, não tem como. Não encontro nada de realmente inovador aqui, na verdade, o sentimento é justamente o contrário: uma repetição quase literal do início de Dragon Ball clássico. Até o fato de o neto da Pan ter o mesmo nome do Goku reforça essa sensação de reciclagem, como se tivessem decidido copiar a estrutura original sem acrescentar nada de novo.

A animação, por outro lado, é boa e cumpre o seu papel sem comprometer. É competente, funciona visualmente e, tecnicamente, não há nada que realmente prejudique a experiência. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, não salva o restante. É como um prato bem apresentado mas sem sabor: bonito de ver, mas incapaz de compensar a falta de conteúdo que realmente prenda o espectador.

No fim, minha relação com o Dragon Ball clássico nunca foi das melhores, e como isso aqui é praticamente uma cópia descarada daquela fase da obra, era inevitável que eu não fosse gostar. Minha nota final é um 4 — e, sinceramente, só não é menor porque, por ser curto e não ter um grande vilão ou uma trama complexa, acaba funcionando como um conteúdo extra para passar o tempo. Ainda assim, por mais que dê para assistir sem sofrimento, eu não recomendo. Aos meus olhos, isso aqui simplesmente não é Dragon Ball.
