Horimiya

On the surface, the thought of Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura getting along would be the last thing in people's minds. After all, Hori has a perfect combination of beauty and brains, while Miyamura appears meek and distant to his fellow classmates. However, a fateful meeting between the two lays both of their hidden selves bare. Even though she is popular at school, Hori has little time to socialize with her friends due to housework. On the other hand, Miyamura lives under the noses of his peers, his body bearing secret tattoos and piercings that make him look like a gentle delinquent.

Having opposite personalities yet sharing odd similarities, the two quickly become friends and often spend time together in Hori's home. As they both emerge from their shells, they share with each other a side of themselves concealed from the outside world.

Very easy to love romance anime. It can be divided into 2 parts, the first half being romance heavy, focusing mostly on the 2 MCs, and a second half where side characters take over the screentime and the show feels a lot more like a slice of life anime with romance a bit less focus on romance.

From what I gathered in discussions, the anime skips a ton of manga chapters. Many of it were okay to skip to keep the show romance focused, that's very justifiable, but there are also important parts that shouldn't have been cut and makes the pacing too fast at times. ... Most likely the thought process was that they were not sure if the show will be popular enough for a 2nd season, so they wrapped things up so it adapts the story in just 1 season with closure. Hindsight is 20/20, the show ended up being popular and they released a sequel that adapts what was cut.

With that being said, the only negative I can say about the show is the weird pacing for the reasons above. It's a shame the adaptation turned out this way, but at the same time who knows how it would've turned out if they adapted the whole thing in 2 parts.

Honestly, this is a slice of life anime, even with the amount of chapters cut from the source material. The story is very simple, there's a minimal driving force through romance, but for the most part things just happen, and that's okay. Miyamura's character is very detailed compared to Hori, and especially compared to all other characters. Among the side characters there are ones more depth and there are ones with less, could be due to the heavy cuts from the source material.

Artisticly I liked the anime a lot. I like Cloverworks animations, the OST is fine too. What really stood out is the opening, this is the only anime where I never skipped the opening. The song is catchy, the visuals are really pretty and detailed, but most importantly the opening perfectly captures the vibe and theme of the show, it's exciting yet calming.

Common sense would tell me it's an 8 because of the weird pacing during the 2nd half and the missed potential due to the cut chapters, but the experience of getting to know these characters and their feelings and their story was just a very pleasant experience that not many anime in this genre can pull off. Anything below 9 doesn't do this show justice.

Mixed Feelings

I will give this anime 6/10 (Fine) for a school/romance themed anime.

Romance: 5/10 (Average). I mean, it is there, you will get main characters being in love, mundane high school romance. You will empathise with the main characters only if you are lacking romantic interactions in real life.

Characters: 5/10 (Average). Characters do not develop during the plot. All male characters have nearly identical personalities, only their crushes are different.

Plot: 6/10 (Fine). It doesn't really have a plot. You are rather presented with a handful of funny situations the main characters will find themselves in. Some of them are actually fun to watch, but nothing ... really stands out. Just high school students liking each other and being awkward.

Visual: 7/10 (Good). Good animation for its genre. Perfectly fits "slice of life" theme.

Summarising, if you are not romance-deficient, don't watch this. Otherwise, yeah, it'll slightly warm your heart.

Title: Horimiya

Story

I watched Horimiya because of the many positive reviews. Therefore, I went in with relatively high expectations. UNFORTUNATELY, these were not met in any way. Both the plot and the characters barely convinced me. It was just a copy and paste of other romance animes like Toradora or Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun.

Again, we have a tsundere girl who becomes aggressive towards the male main character. The girl is a super genius, popular, and desirable, while the boy is just average, unattractive, and without friends. Both fall in love with each other within a short time. They didn’t have any past together either. Very contradictory is ... Miyamura's statement in one episode (I don’t remember which) that he loves Hori because she doesn't judge anyone by their appearance. However, she only fell in love with him after seeing him styled differently.

The beginning of the first episode started strangely (with a pedophilic teacher), but then became more interesting because of unplanned twists. Unfortunately, Horimiya didn't manage to stay interesting for long. The further you go, the more boring and predictable the anime becomes. There was no excitement, no cliffhangers, no drama, let alone an extraordinary situation.

Characters

Hori: Very simple character, smart, tsundere, but not supposed to be in love until Miyamura came and turned her world upside down.

Miyamura: Most including myself, never understood why Miyamura got tattoos or piercings. Maybe he wanted to seem tougher because his character is quite soft. However, I found his character so boring and dull that I almost fell asleep several times when he spoke. Additionally, he is very timid and Hori, as a GIRL, has to protect him from other boys. So we have a wimpy male protagonist and a strong, smart, and confident woman. It’s up to you how you feel about that.

Another Character: I only found Ishikawa interesting. The others were just there to fill the episodes. I found their stories boring and generic

Looks simple, so just satisfactory

Conclusion

Very disappointing. There was potential, but they failed to create a believable and interesting story. Therefore, my rating is not particularly good
