Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan (Today's Menu for the Emiya Family)

With the threat of the Holy Grail War no longer looming over Fuyuki City, its inhabitants can finally enjoy a time of peace. Now that all of the Masters and Servants have adjusted to their new mundane lives, Shirou has taken it upon himself to cook for his household and show Saber the wonders of modern cuisine. Every day, he ventures into the marketplace to see what kind of different meals he can cook up with unique ingredients and a limited budget. However, his legendary skills often attract uninvited guests from all over the city, so there is never a dull moment at dinner with the Emiya family.

As his guests entertain themselves in the living room, Shirou walks through the step-by-step process of creating some of his favorite meals. With delicacies such as his savory New Year soba with shrimp tempura, steamy foil-baked salmon, and cheesy bamboo shoot gratin, everything is up for grabs on his menu. Itadakimasu!

Imagine your local eatery is sporting the “Best Burger in the World”. When you check it out for yourself you are presented with a monstrosity. A veritable tower to the heavens is seated on your plate. Bacon, lettuce, jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, and countless other adornments cover the stacks and stacks of grilled beef with cheese stuffed inside each patty. At first glance it’s miraculous but after taking measures you quickly realize there is no way to start eating it that will not cause the whole thing to come tumbling down on you. Even if you could find the optimal eating-path there ... is no way you could possibly finish once you started.

Meanwhile on the neighboring table you see it. The lightly toasted sesame seed bun. The single piece of green crispy lettuce. The light drizzle of simple ketchup. The single slice of cheddar cheese slowly melting in between the two perfectly grilled all-beef patties. Despite its simple nature this unassuming burger makes expert use of only the absolute necessary ingredients to bring the most satisfying experience possible.

The Fate franchise is that first towering burger. While crafted with fantastic ingredients it is a convoluted series that is intimidating to start and impossible to finish. Despite all the amazing elements you are missing you simply can’t justify taking that first bite knowing the labyrinthian journey you would be setting out on.

“Today's Menu for the Emiya Family” is that simple burger. A simple setting and a simpler plot that selects only the absolute necessary elements of the Fate franchise to bring you the most comfortable and approachable experience possible. Just like every bite of that simple burger, each episode of this show fills you with a genuine sense of soothing warmth.

Gone are the days of the Grail Wars. The characters that many have come to know and love are living a peaceful life. We follow our leading “Apron Boy” Shirou Emiya as he prepares delicious meals each day. Whether it be for overworked neighbors, tired classmates, or just his once-servant Saber, Shirou cooks up the culinary equivalent of a large warm hug that brings a much needed sense of peace to the world of the Fate franchise each and every night.

There is no barrier of entry for this show. New viewers who have never attempted that towering burger will be just as at home as the ones who have braved its heights before. A new Grail War may be around the corner but in the meantime come on and in and kick off your shoes. There’s a seat saved just for you at the dinner table and there’s always something good cooking at the Emiya Household.

Lancer doesn't die in this series! This anime is honestly adorable. The servants that are usually at each other's throats, are in this the best friends you could imagine. The art style is adorable, and the interactions between them are cute and funny+it has food! This is in my opinion the best the Fate series has to offer, that is of course very subjective, and it's certainly not as action filled or story driven as the others. It's very different, but it's a good different. Even better than Carnival Phantasm. Would definitely recommend, if a more slice of life-y series is something for you.

What kind of nutjob you have to be if you start the Fate series by not reading the eroge visual novel because you know you have to commit about 100 hours into it for the full story and it never really officially appeared in the west iether, plus it contains very lewd things in it or watching the 2006 anime series Fate/Stay Night by studio that contains very comedic fan-sub quotes like "People die when they are killed." and jump straith trough 'Today's Menu for the Emiya Family' or let's call it "Fate/Flavor"? In a way, it makes sense. You see, in the Fate/Stay Night ... VN had its moments where it went into great detail on meals prepared by Shiro and others during less dramatic moments that anime adaptations cut out so you atleast had that out of the way and since you have met the charathers first in a peacefull matter. The only thing that's different is that this anime is set in modern day Japan somehow. Trust me, I did my homework before I started to write this review while being this is the very first Fate-related anime I've watched. Guess the food porn gets its day in the sun with this series.

Story: 5/10 (Average)
Since this is considered a slice of life-show of only 12 minutes long each episode, so it's kinda the point there's not much story to begin with. Even though this show doesn't actually make a whole lot of sense continuity-wise, it gives us what we all secretly wanted - to see everyone getting along, alive and happy. And apparently, eating good food, too, I guess. This is pretty much what this anime all about and I kinda enjoyed it. I must admit however I probably missed a lot of references and jokes in the anime that I didn't get just because this is my very first Fate-anime I've seen. But incase you have seen more Fate anime, I'm sure you would get the references.

Art-style: 6/10 (Fine)
For being an ONA and a spin-off anime, you must consider the fact there's not much budget to work with compaired with a fully TV series, so I guess the animations is done very fine indeed. The food and the charathers are done ok enough art-style wise in my opinion, so that's atleast positieve. Even though an episode only takes like 12 minutes, the cute animations didn't bored me at all. There's not really much I can bash this anime regarding animation-wise, so I'll keep it at that.

Sound: 7/10 (Good)
The voice acting is done good and I loved the added background music. The opening song is cheerful and welcomes you very well. It really did fired up the anime quite a bit and I really enjoyed that.

Charathers: 6/10 (Fine)
Saber (Fate/stay night) is here! For me she's a really quiet girl and very chill gall to hang around with. Shirou Emiya in also here. I know he's the one that delivered the famous fandubbed line "People die when they are killed." Then we have our beloved Rin is with her very nice and easy outfit to put together for a late cosplay convention you want to attent afterall and very populair because of her thighs. Even the cute Illia makes her appearance in this show. No, you're not allowed to post pictures of her on Reddit and Tumbler somehow by unexplained reasons. Many other were also present if you're wondering. It was quite fun and wholesome to see all these charathers that are from a violent eroge visual novel interact with each other. These kind of interactions in between I really do crave myself somehow.

Enjoyment: 5/10 (Average)
I liked this show in some excent mainly because of the mundane nature. It's just a shame I'm not that familair with the characters. Otherwise I would probably enjoy this show more. It has it's wholesome moments for sure and it's lovely seeing the characters interact like friends & family with each other. It's just a shame I'm not familair with the whole Fate franshise, so I don't know the real relationships between the charathers that are going on, so I really can't make a comment about that.

Overall: 5/10 (Average)
So, would I recommend Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan aka Fate/Flavor? Atleast I've gotten some idea's I could try out to improve my very own weeb cooking skills if I ever feel fancy, but that's it. Can you get into the Fate series by watching this? That all depends on yourself to be honest. People (want to) eat when they are hungry. Itadakimasu!
