Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou

Amid the desolate remains of a once-thriving city, only the rumbling of a motorbike breaks the cold winter silence. Its riders, Chito and Yuuri, are the last survivors in the war-torn city. Scavenging old military sites for food and parts, the two girls explore the wastelands and speculate about the old world to pass the time. Chito and Yuuri each occasionally struggle with the looming solitude, but when they have each other, sharing the weight of being two of the last humans becomes a bit more bearable. Between Yuuri's clumsy excitement and Chito's calm composure, their dark days get a little brighter with shooting practice, new books, and snowball fights on the frozen battlefield.

Among a scenery of barren landscapes and deserted buildings, Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou tells the uplifting tale of two girls and their quest to find hope in a bleak and dying world.

As TKmiz' most famous work, it comes as no surprise that this anime is absolute pure unadulterated KINO.

Most post apocalyptic anime have a huge focus on action. The main characters fighting bandits or monsters or radiation. Girls last tour has none of that, it is simply... empty. This anime hits right in the gut with its exploration of the ramifications of war, finding hope in a hopeless situation, what it means to live, and nostalgia for a past you never lived. All of this tied together by 2 loveable characters and a beautifully animated world around them.

Let's start with the characters.

Chito as the more ... "Academic" of the two often thinks about what life was like before the war, where society flourished and humanity was bountiful and that as some of the only humans left alive, what should they do to honor and document their past. A lot of her character revolves around her wanting to emulate the past way of life as best she can with the little knowledge she has as that is how she believes "humans are supposed to live" and thus is what will bring the pair success. She also possesses a strong desire to preserve their present so that in the rare chance someone in the future she can tell the world "I was here! I lived!" which gives her hope in an otherwise hopeless situation and makes for a wonderful character that pulls on the heart strings.

Yuuri on the other hand is much more able to live in the moment. Unlike Chito, she is unable to read or write and thus does not feel the same connection to the past, choosing instead to focus on the present. Despite the horrible situation the two live in, Yuuri finds joy in the smaller things, notably in food, though also in things like the sound of rain making a kind of music.

In this case, the Brains/Brawn duo plays wonderfully off each other and the writing gives the characters great chemistry.

As for the themes, the themes of this show can be incredibly depressing. As the show is set in a post apocalyptic world, the scars of war are everywhere. Weapons, tanks, destroyed buildings all just laying around. Hell, the girls themselves survive off old military rations! As the characters explore the world, they often talk with each other about what war means, why humans would go to war, and why humans would create weapons capable of such destruction. I don't wish to spoil, but the writing is incredibly well done on this topic, especially when the pair find relics and forgotten memories of those who are no longer there to remember.

It also touches a lot on what it means to live, especially when the only way to live is for survival. Despite the fact the girls will never get to experience a pre-war life, they each must find their own ways to cope with their reality, and still find ways to enjoy the time they do have with the materials they have. Again, I don't wish to spoil, but the writing is incredible.

As if this wasn't enough, the unique style of TKMiz is absolutely amazing. Somehow a grey and destroyed city feels vibrant. Despite the fairly simple feel to the characters faces, they are still incredibly expressive. The animation is smooth and pleasant on the eyes.

Sound design is good too, not much to say on it other than the OST is great, and the sounds and in the show are atmospheric and immersive.

The only reason I don't rate this anime a perfect 10/10 is because it only covers the first 4 volumes of the Manga. The Manga ending really tied the whole series together in a way the Anime ending didn't. As the ending felt a little rushed, especially compared to the master class of the Manga ending.

Mixed Feelings

Damn. This story is wild. A happy story of two cute girls is told in the foreground while the story of the apocalypse the left the world as it is now is whispered in the background. The background noise grows louder and louder until you reach the climax in the final two episodes. If you haven't figured it out by the, don't worry, they make it very very clear what happened at that point.

I love the post-apocalypse setting, and this one really did it in a way I haven't seen it done before.

The characters are beautiful. Just two unaware, innocent, and naive girls on a ... journey where they reap what the generations before them have sowed.

As for the ending, this one hurts. It left me wishing for more but realistically when you make it to the end of the show you really don't need them to tell you what happens after the screen fades to black.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou, also known as Girls' Last Tour, is an anime that presents a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity is on the brink of extinction. The story follows Chito and Yuuri, two girls who travel on a motorcycle and are the last survivors of a city devastated by war. Throughout their journey, Chito and Yuuri explore the remnants of human civilization in search of food and parts for their motorcycle, while reflecting on the world they once knew.

In terms of animation, Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou stands out for its ... visual style that evokes a sense of sadness and loneliness that fits the desolate atmosphere of the series. The desert and ruined settings, along with the atmospheric soundtrack, contribute to creating the atmosphere.

However, the story itself may seem slow and without a clear direction. Additionally, the humor in the series did not capture me. The age of the protagonists is also not revealed, which can be annoying.

My rating is 5/10, and I struggled through the last 5 episodes to not abandon it. I would not recommend it
