Uma Musume: Pretty Derby

Famous racehorses that have left behind worthy legacies, unique as they can be, are reincarnated as horse girls in a parallel world. In this life, they start their journey anew as they continue to race and perhaps relive the success they once lived through.

Aspiring to become the best racehorse in Japan, a horse girl named Special Week moves to Tokyo to enroll in the Tracen Academy—an institution that nurtures horse girls like her to become better racers. There, Special Week witnesses the sophisticated running style of Silence Suzuka and is inspired to become a racer like her. Shortly after, Special Week finds herself recruited into Silence Suzuka's team, Spica. From there, she begins her path to the top—one lap at a time.

Uma Musume Pretty Derpy Season 1 is in my opinion without a doubt the weakest entry in the franchise, while not bad, P.A Works (the studio behind this season) fails to create something that really stands out. However, it did have certain aspects where it outshines it's later seasons adapted by Studio KAI and eventually CyGames own animation studio that they created for the specific reason of being able to make the anime in the vision they truly had for it.


Comedy:
To talk about the positives first, the humor in this season was by far it's best aspect, something that the later seasons feel like they ... toned down on. With many characters like GoldShip and Special week, the constant jokes and gags made in this seasons were more than entertaining and most of the talked about memes and jokes do come from this season.

Animation:
The animation was not bad in any shape or form, however it doesn't stand out either, it feels like the animators played it very safe by keeping things grounded, there isn't a lot of creative play with styles or cinematography. There's not a lot to be said rather than really average animation.

Characters:
While entertaining for the purpose of making you laugh, that's about all they can do. I think they failed to really make any deeper developments. There was an attempt with Special week and Silence Suzuka, yet they're written in a way to where they just come off as flat, one dimensional and predictable. The rivalry between them was pretty standard and not really compelling, mainly due to silence Suzuka having close to no emotional range, falling into the classic archetype of a kuudere, which I personally don't often enjoy. It felt like she would often just stare at a distance and either 1. Smile 2. Look pensive while mumbling "spe-chan..." To call out the main character. We never really got a lot to bite into when it comes to her, and if even just one character is this way then the entire rivarly between both character gets ruined as it requires both to be just as compelling.


Music:
This part was good, the music is just standard of what you'd expect from uma musume, it is the kind of genre that ends up depending on ones preference/taste in music, you either like it or you don't.

In short, uma musume Pretty Derpy Season 1 was just okay, nothing bad but nothing too remarkable or outstanding either

Mixed Feelings

I think this anime literally cured my boredom and really life changing. It is because the story are really heart touching but sometimes they are many hilarious and funny part. After that, I think some majority didn't know or didn't care about this anime and maybe it depends on someone thought. I started watching this anime like 7 months ago.

Furthermore, many Umamusume characters in this series are literally cute and adorable that could cheer me up and regain my mood and mostly all Umamusume characters are inspired from the real life events. Besides, all Umamusume characters are females but mostly are males horses in real ... life events but there are not many females horses.

Anyways, this anime literally "must watch" but if you want to. I hope you all enjoy it this anime!

Even though I enjoy the game and franchise as a whole, the first season isn't particularly compelling.

Some of the aspects of their world that are normal but to us are horsey are fun, but underutilized.

The sound was frequently mixed weird with glitches and bad balancing.

The art felt manufactured and soul-less which unfortunately made it visually unappealing and didn't play into the fun designs the horse girls have.

As a sports anime, it missed that sparkle that good sports anime have. The outcomes were pretty predictable and I never felt the stakes. The idol aspect of winning the races feels like a weird afterthought in ... nearly every case.
