One Piece Film: Gold

Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew have finally arrived on Gran Tesoro, a ship carrying the largest entertainment city in the world. Drawn in by the chances of hitting the jackpot, the crew immediately head to the casino. There, they quickly find themselves on a winning streak, playing with what seems to be endless luck.

When offered a special gamble by Gild Tesoro—the master of the city himself—the crew agrees, choosing to believe in their captain's luck. However, when they find themselves victims of a despicable scam, the crew quickly realize that there is something darker happening beneath the city's surface.

Left penniless and beaten down, the Straw Hat Crew are forced to rely on another gamble of a plan. With the help of a new friend or two, the group must work to reclaim what they've lost before time, and what remains of their luck, runs out.

The Casino/Gran Torino concept for the Straw Hats to enter a new adventure with great pacing...this movie was made properly and it has great presentation.

It fixes the pacing of the previous arc of Dressrosa. It was highly enjoyable for me with the use of betting and gold as a key theme in the movie.

I believe that this movie is well made for the fans of One Piece, especially since it was released at the time of an inconsistent arc of Dressrosa.

There was a plan for the team to adapt within the movie within the set circumstances and there is a plot twist which quickly accelerates ... the end of the movie...which was worthwhile.

Mixed Feelings

"One Piece: Gold" definitely has its flaws, but overall I found it to be an enjoyable One Piece film.

The animation and art style are both excellent. The Strawhats going to a casino serves as the perfect excuse to dress them up in new, flashy outfits. The action scenes are nicely animated as well.

The plot feels a bit forced at times. There's no real explanation as to why the crew ended up in Gran Tesoro - apparently, Luffy just decided they should go to the casino? And the plot wasn't exactly original either. Nonetheless, it ends up being entertaining. Plus, there are a bunch of ... characters that have cameos throughout the film. There are moments where the Strawhats feel a bit out of character, though.

The newly introduced characters - Tesoro, Baccarat, Carina etc. - are well designed and consistent. They have distinct personalities and, in general, they are good characters. Personally, I would have liked to know more about the other side characters, not just about Tesoro and Carina. The antagonist's backstory was fine, although it felt a bit cliché and rushed. I do understand, however, that there wasn't enough screen time to fully explain and explore his past. Same as how there wasn't enough time to develop each character.

In conclusion, One Piece: Gold is a decent work, but not a must-watch for fans of the series. It lacks a bit of coherence sometimes, and it's far from perfect; still, it's an amusing film with good quality animation.

Leave it to the movie production's team to consistently create a dollar-store One Piece's story

While the final confrontation and the backstory of Tesoro managed to reach that high canon standard, sadly, almost anything else in here is guaranteed you'll never caught Oda slacking and putting any into his main storyline.

The Western influence of the mafias and heist movies is so apparent and so cheaply recreated, they didn't even try to masks all the twist and cliches they've borrowed. The spirit of the main crew is lost in this mixture, they're even betraying the character in one scene where there are kids being abused and Luffy ... just standing there watching!

This feels like someone trying to do One Piece instead of really doing it. It's a jumble of everything that you has ever liked about the series, but so try-hard and half-assed, resulting in zero personality.
