So heart of gold is supposed to be a prequel to this, but is heart of gold necessary to understand the plot of gold, or can someone watch one without the other?

Yea totally, Heart of Gold just alludes to how Nami knows Carina, really briefly like 1 clip, and how they have the vivre card at the beginning. Its totally watchable without it.

Not sure what you did but Heart of Gold is worth watching anyways. It’s really good and if you like the dub they have a dubbed version.
