Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

Ko No Su Ba is another common fantasy world series the likes of which has been plaguing the anime industry for the past 2 years. We start off this series by introducing the main character Kazuma Satou, a reclusive video game nerd who is excited to play a newly released MMORPG. Arriving home on his way from the video game store he notices a girl who he assumes is about to get hit by a car and so he pushes her out of harms way, alas Kazuma is struck by the vehicle and is immediately killed. *ehm* yuyu hakusho intro *ehm*

Interestingly, as soon as he ... dies he enters this sort of secluded chamber-like place where he meets the second main character, Goddess Aqua! Aqua explains to him how he is dead and that, instead of sending him straight to heaven which quote "is a boring place where you just float around" she wants to send him to an alternative mmorpg-like world where he has to defeat the Devil King! Kazuma, not nearly as baffled as he should be, accepts the alternative offer and then Aqua explains how he can take any one power or item with him that will give him an advantage in this world, and so naturally he picks Aqua to take with him.

Shortly after, for lack of better words, a wicked time portal travel dimension scene our two main characters realize living in this mmorpg fantasy like world is a little more difficult than they would have imagined. They start off as noobs in this beginners town where they have to build up there levels and make money from doing quests. Kazuma and Aqua decide they need more partners to help with quests and so Megumin and Darkness find there ways into the group, and so now our main lead character Kazuma is surrounded by 3 females lead characters, I wonder what could happen?? No this is not a harem but it damn well did feel like it in some episodes.

And so this is how this 10 episode series continued, focusing on quests and some other small story lines. One issue I had with this anime is that I could never really tell how these characters are really progressing, they didn't tell us there levels except in one episode, but there was no context to compare it to so it was pretty much irrelevant. We do figure our early on in this series what skills they're better with such as luck for Kazuma but we don't see or are ever told how there skills progressed. Another issue I had with the series is that its story is as such; kill the Devil King, of whom we never even had one glimpse. They do meet and even fight one of his generals, which was a pretty embarrassing and cringey fight but that happened anyway. In fact, in most fight scenes in this series we see our 3 female main characters doing almost all the fighting begging me to ask the question what is Kazuma good for anyway?

I can continue to go on with many of the little things that annoyed me about this series but I digress, I doubt that the next season of this show is going to make this one anymore entertaining or worthwhile but who knows maybe they'll finally fight the Devil King. Overall this story, characters and my personal enjoyment was just dreadful, art and sound however were above standard and done really well. 4/10.

Alright so here is my first review(a negative one) and let's see how this goes.I'm not take my time to explain what konosuba....you could just see the synopsis....yup as easy as that.All I wanna say is that you can see the amount of effort put into an anime with it's quality and konosuba is animethat makes no effort whatsoever to convince that this show is worth watching. Now keep in mind that if you don't mind an effortless anime having some generic aspects you can pretty much enjoy this one. Now the review is based on what I watched from the ... first 4 episodes which is what I believe to be enough to tell what kind of anime your watching so let's get going!!!!!

Story 1/10
Well here is the thing...it's clear that this anime ia not trying to give us a well developed story to invest ourself in.it's more like an enjoyment anime.however the anime in the first 4 episodes does not progress any further nor does it exploits it's wirld well. It simply just gives very brief summary about what's going on and it does not expand on any of its aspects. It's does not serve the fantasy theme any justice!!!!!!it's just a shame to be included in this kind of genre. But in the end the anime is more like a daily life comedy in parallel universe style so it might be a bit unfair to rate it's story.but the anime could have done MORE FKN EFFORT in drawing us into it's world and that's a big DISASTER!!!

Guys for damn sake it's 2016 already!!!!!!what's with low budget outdated art and animation.were they even trying????!!!!!this animation style could be accepted like 7 years ago but seriously that time is over.update yourself a little bit.the art is just plain and outdated and what's worse is the characters design. Now i guess here is where alot would like to debate with me...but if you look closely the design for each character is just also plain as the animation.the dress code is very generic,the character looks are also very generic and some are there for the sake of fanservice.Again this anime does not give any effort to make the drawings appealing which should have been there!!!!it's a fantasy anime it's drawings is supposed to make us WOW but nope...juuust plain art..FK U!!!!!!!

Now here is where the anime focusd a little bit..which is the presentation of the characters...now i said the anime is not attempting to develop a plot so expect a poorly developed character roster.but what we should focus here more is how enjoyable these characters are since this anime trying to be joyful and funny. I found the characters to be quite acceptable except for the main character.....he is like the 9999999999 copy of alot of main characters out there and there was no moment that enjoyed his envolvement.I am well aware that this could be different for others cuz sometimes clichéd characters are fun...but for me not this one. And again 0 effort ZERO FKN effort to make a unique character roster they are just the generic ones that you could find anywhere that you may like or dislike.

Now there is not much to talk about the soundtrack here..it doesn't stand out and it's not bad either....back to my point again z-e-r-o effort

The enjoyment if this anime could mostly come from how funny and joyfulit was. To me , the comedy for the most part is quite clichéd and really unfunny....i may have liked it if i was 10 years old but nope.of course there were parts that i think were unexpected and funny but just doesn't outweigh the boredom of this anime.action scenes......LOOOOOOOOL!!!!!what am i even saying...well since the animation is plain and there is not alot of action to begin with so i think it also failed here...the enjoybality this anime i think depends heavily on how funny you found it to be and you wont enjoy the action just..trust me

SPOILER FREE REVIEW

This review covers the 22 episodes of Konosuba (2 seasons and 2 OVAS) since both seasons are in every aspect identical (though the drop in the animation quality seems pretty notable to me in the second season).

Konosuba is for a lot of people a very hard anime to review simply because there is no secret formula to review comedy series and because not everybody in the planet shares the same sense of humor but i'm not one of those guys, Konosuba is not as innocent as it seems ergo it should be ready to receive harder hits due to it's own nature, the ... synopsis and the genre labels are not wrong but they are not complete either, what the synopsis and the genre labels forget to mention is that the fanservice amount in this series is HUGE and that part is extremely important.

Konosuba is another one of those animes that belong to the INSANELY famous/infamous "Isekai"sub-genre and to my eyes Konosuba brings absolutely nothing new to the table, i have to mention i'm not a well versed person in this sub-genre at all and even i can tell this show is nothing special.

Recently i've seen fans of this show saying Konosuba is a better choice than other Isekai animes because it explores a "whole new perspective" that hasn't been touched ever, hell, i've even read several comments of people that to go as far as saying this anime is a deconstruction, they say the idea of a show where the protagonist travels to a whole new world and he actually choses to stay and struggle instead of trying desperately to find his way out is as revolutionary as Utena, but sadly this is false, the same idea was explored in No Game No Life and the concept was touched superficially in nothing more and nothing less than SAO so i don't know exactly where such idea came from.

To keep this review short ill say this show uses the exact same formula over and over and over again, the jokes are basically always the same, since they grow from the same roots it would be dumb to expect otherwise, these roots are the unidimensional characters, we have the dumb and almost useless goddess who always ruins everything, the EXTREMELY pervert and masochist paladin, the nini-hikikomori protagonist (who is also insanely pervert) and the crazy girl with a cronic addiction to sniffing C4 that also enjoys giving weird names to everything she founds, what the hell? Chunchunmaru and Chomosuke? lol

Moving out to the technical section, well... i try not to be superficial and to not judge a book by it's cover but the music is forgettable, the character desing is generic and simplistic for at least all of the secondary characters and the animation is TERRIBLE but since the animation part seems to be on purpouse i'll leave to you to be the judge and deliberate if that is good or bad. Does that animation and character desing improve the comical aspect of the series? it's up to you and only you pal.

The real and honest reason a lot people actually started watching Konosuba is nothing more and nothing less that... oh yeah buddy you know that, say it with me, don't be shy ¡¡¡THE DELICIOUS NUTRUTIOUS FANSERVICE!!! ¡¡¡YEAH BOIIIII!!! back in 2016 anime forums and Facebook groups were filled to the top with pictures of Aqua going commando and GIFS of this anime and his... particular jiggle physics, well Konosuba is not the only sinner who caught adepts by using this metod, another insanely popular anime this year did exactly the same thing, getting massive for having a very "complex plot", i'm talking to you Mr. Kobayashi, the point here is that showing some skin really helps to become massive (lol) and that point is one of the main reasons i judge this anime much more seriously, well we also have the fact that some villians are supossed to be though guys but end up being pathethic cartoons and that the world is insanely small, everything spins around the main 4 since nobody outside of them achives nothing special.

Watch this anime if you like: NGNL, SAO, Overlord, Mondaiji tachi, etc.

Don't watch this if you look for alternative experiences when it comes to animation, you are gonna get dissapointed.

The art was nice, and I guess the fan-service part of the anime was alright too, but that can't even come close to making up for the story/characters. The plot itself is ok, kind of generic, but whatever. The characters, on the other hand, are awful. The only likeable character was the dallahan or whatever he was. His reaction to the main characters was pretty much the only funny parts in the show. Aqua's constant nagging and whining took up a good majority of the actual show, and Darkness literally says the same things over and over again. Megumin's personality was ok, but as a ... character she was awful, the fact that she is useless after one spell. I get that it's part of the joke, but not when that's the only joke you know. The show overall is pretty much a huge joke and should not be taken seriously at all. There is nothing that really would draw anyone in to watch at all. It doesn't really have anything going for it, it's not engaging, it's not scary, its not interesting, it's not sad or tear jerking, its not really anything, it's kinda there. And yes I know its' a comedy it's not supposed to be scary or sad it's supposed to be funny, but even then it still doesn't even manage to be funny at all. Watching it was a waste of time.

This series seems to be pretty popular, but I don’t see why. I didn’t like it at all.

This isn’t the type of series I usually like, and this one was no exception. Even though it’s set in a different world and all, it’s still a slice of life to its core. So when they have as their goal to defeat the demon lord, it's only because it will lead to some “funny” situations. And the humor in this show is really repetitive.

The only kinda funny person is Kazuma, although most of his jokes boil down to him being horny. The other characters are the stupid ... Aqua, the masochist Darkness and the chuunibyou Megumin. And basically all of their jokes are of their respective type, especially Darkness, which gets old really quickly.

Every situation they find themselves in is supposed to be funny. And everything they do doesn’t matter. They are really overpowered, for no reason. They simply get resurrected when they die. I can’t find myself getting attached to this world and characters when everything is a joke. Most humor series suffer from this exact same problem, in my opinion.

The character designs are pretty cool and the animation when Megumin charges her attack looks great. But I can’t help but feel that this show is better suited as a compilation of the best moments, which there are some, instead of wrapping them up in a big dumb show.

I can finally say that i did watched this show so i can properly trash on it like crazy without holding back. To be completely honest? I expected for this show to be average so i could go with "meh, its a fine show".

The world and the story: The world of Konosuba is pretty interesting for being a "gaming" world, it doesnt do anything new (i don't think you have to flip the table like crazy and create something drastically unique to have a quality product) and while the start is incredibly cliche (despite the show trying to poke fun at cliches) it picks up ... fast towards trying to show off something original.
Why are some medics laughing when someone is dying though?

Art: It's fine but there is a TON of fanservice. I wouldnt complain if there wasnt so much or if the fanservice was slightly necesary but that's not the case. The fanservice is not necesary 90% of the time.

The op and ending are so forgetable and i'm saying this just after finishing an episode. A bunch of VA didnt seemed to fit the character at all like Aqua.

Characters: Kazuma was surprisingly entertaining most of the time but his comedy sometimes relied into poking fun at cliches and tropes. I like parody but in order to make a good parody you have to make something funny, something with quality or something entertaining enough to turn your head back and have some harmless laughter at whatever is being made fun of.
Konosuba tries incredibly hard to be a parody but the show in itself is so incredibly boring that this backfires greatly. It's like a terrible soccer player taunting professional players and not being able to even make some proper passes.
The rest of the cast is boring and plain (Darkness being the only exception). Making one dimensional characters is not a bad thing, they have the ability to get character development, they can be funny if handled properly and they can make for amazing moments. Konosuba doesnt do any of this. The characters simply are there and after their initial impression they wont move too much or show off any redeemable qualities.
Also there is something wrong when your one dimensional characters try to make fun about a new one dimensional character that is being presented. You can deduce that yourself.
Again the show tries really hard to convince you that this band of people are unprepared and pathetic when they are not. They are not weak, they are crazy powerful and incredibly talented (that's also another cliche/trope...).

As for the fun you will have seeing the show. The selling point and argument of all the fans of the show i talked with was "I know it looks stupid but its really funny" "It's good comedy" or something along those lines.
On the second episode the MC was waving around the underwears of a girl like a flag.
That was so funny! (sarcasm).
The jokes in Konosuba aren't long or properly constructed. The level of comedy is almost at Pop Team Epic level of terribleness (but not crazyness) but PTE is aware of this.
Konosuba is not, a bunch of jokes are thrown here and there but aside from chuckling a little at the second episode there wasnt a moment of the show that was remotely funny.
My internal fan tried really hard to overlook the flaws my critical side was throwing at this show, desperately trying to grasp or grab something in the show that was worthwhile.
Something that deserved praised, something entertaining, something DECENT.
There was nothing.

I will keep this as brief as I can;
This show is a comedy show , intended to parody a lot of the tropes in "Video game/Fantasy "Another world" anime" ... unfortunately it is declawed, the jokes are very bland and the characterization is very obvious. Parody as a genre is quite lowbrow compared to its higher brow cousin 'satire'... because of this, the story and characterization suffer.

Megumin, Aqua, Darkness/Lalatina and Kazuma are all one-note characters with no depth or interesting aspects to them, they are vehicles for the atrocious comedy... now it does have some great scenes but they are incredibly rare.


All of that said;
The ... art design is beautiful and far better than the show deserves... towards the end the show goes overbudget and the animation shortcuts begin to abound, alongside a huge drop in art quality so not even those things can save this trash heap of a show.

I wanted to like it, so badly... but it let me down again and again. It is one of the worst shows of this type I've ever seen.

You are probably wondering why such a low score? And why am I reviewing an anime that I dropped? Well that't the point. Rarely have i ever flat out dropped on anime. I have a general rule that I think is fair enough to follow. Give an anime 5 to 6 or so episodes to keep me interested enough to watch further. This anime started out funny enough and I felt interested. It was kinda funny seeing what it would really be like if you got transported to another world and you aren't that powerful. Though over the course of the next few episodes or ... so, (I'll be honest I just made my account but i dropped this anime back in 2016 so I apologize for not being able to remember the exact episode I dropped) I just felt worn down, I wasn't enjoying the humor, it actually has some of my least favorite type of humor, like the episode where Aqua got swallowed by a frog and when being brought back home the joke was they looked like they were R word and that's my least favorite type of humor, just misunderstandings that lead people to think you are a low down pervert and many other things, that's not the main humor of the show but it irritated me a lot. I don't like Aqua, she's annoying, I know that's the joke but the joke fails if the audience is also annoyed. I forgot the explosion girl's name so I'll just refer to her as EG (explosion girl). She was funny at first. I enjoyed there antics a bit,but some alarm in me was screaming this is her one gimmick and she's not actually gonna be fun or interesting for much longer. I also forgot the blonde girl and main character's name as well. But I think I'll start to shorten and get to the point. This anime feels like Lowest Common Denominator stuff that can't fail and seems like its gonna be fun and deep, but no you got the generic pervert wimp neet, you got the annoying one that people will somehow like because she's sexy enough to bang, the young energetic one with one quirk that will be driven into the dirt and the fetish girl. I felt more bad for the main character rather than laugh at his misfortune and was hoping he'd stay dead to finally find peace but Aqua is an asshole and ruined it. It was around that episode where I gave up because I just about had it with this unfunny anime. I understand why people like it, I just can't get behind it and hate how its popular. I don't mind if you like it though it's popularity annoys me and I get infuriated when I kept hearing its getting a movie. Then again SAO got like a few seasons and a movie IIRC, so it's not farfetched this did too. My friend who likes this anime told me it's supposed to be a parody. And that shows why I don't like it. It's a bad parody if I can't tell its a parody. I just thought it was a comedy adventure anime. This was long and disorganized and I am sorry for that. But I you will have to pay me to get me to even watch this again, and I need a buddy next to me to shave off the pain. I don't like Fate Zero but I can tell its a good anime, I don't like Konosuba and I can't even consider it a good anime. Just LCD trash that everyone loves.

This just might be the single least enjoyable anime I've ever tried to watch... and I sat through Million Arthur.

Given its insane popularity and my general enjoyment of the isekai genre, I figured I would give this one a shot with the expectation of it being quite the treat. However, after truly grinding through 4 episodes, I just had to drop it. To me, the characters are all obnoxious. Kazuma is an absolute trash can of a human being, Aqua is god-awful, Darkness is maybe the most obnoxious of them all, and Megumin is definitely the most tolerable, but still quite overdone and annoying. Literally ... every attempt at comedy falls flat for me, though the giant frogs and panty stealing are the memorable ones that just outright sucked. Generally, the whole thing is just over the top in the worst ways and it's just not for me.

Minus the fact that the art is pretty good (even though some of the movements are quite creepy) and the OP/ED are solid... not really any redeeming qualities for me.

In the end, most will probably enjoy this much more than me. It's just that literally everything that one would hope to enjoy here, I very strongly dislike. I understand this is abnormal and I'm an anomaly here, so don't assume you'll dislike this as much as I did. However, I find it necessary to share that there is someone out there who very much wishes they could go back in time and never even consider watching Konosuba.

First review ever here so just bare with me.

Konosuba is an anime that I came into with high hopes initially as I had heard people RAVE about this show, also the vast majority of the reviews I found were positive which also gave me incentive to watch it. I was prepared for a engaging, fun and most of all humorous watch.

Oh how I was wrong.

Story 2/10:

Aside from all the other reasons this show wasn't my favourite (There are a lot), the story has to be one of the weakest and tedious in all of the anime I've watched so far. A classic isekai with a ... terrible journey. I mean, come on. They literally don't make it out of the STARTING VILLAGE in 10 episodes. and you would think that something pretty interesting would have to be happening in this village for the cast to be staying here a whole season. But no, it's literally just the characters horsing around doing random shit like getting drunk or crying that they don't have any money. The most frustrating thing about this show is there is a hint of adventure in a few scenes where a powerful enemy approaches, which invites a journey to be followed, but no. We are just teased with the prospect of leaving the area where we started. If I had to compare this to anything, it would be like loading up a Pokemon game and having to spend 2 hours in the starting village before leaving.

The reason the story isn't a 1 is because of my hope that there will be some sort of escape in the next season from the place we've been stuck in for 10 episodes.

Art 7/10:

Nothing amazing, but really not much to complain about, animation is decent and character designs are also pretty good as well.

Sound 5/10:

Nothing really memorable for me, nothing bad, but nothing great either.

Characters 2/10:

Right, this is where things really go downhill.

Before I go off on a tangent I want to say that Kazuma is the only bearable character in this show, nothing special at all really, but not terrible. Megumin has good moments but at the end of the day I end up grouping her with the rest of the cast.

Which is absolute dogshit I must say.

Let's start with Aqua, a character that I'm convinced was made to intentionally piss people off, because throughout the whole season, she brought nothing to the table (aside from tits if you're into that sort of thing). I just find it so difficult to believe that she is so useless as one of the main characters, she isn't powerful, she isn't funny, she isn't cool or badass, she isn't helpful, developed etc etc etc. I would be fine with her being useless in terms of her skills or powers or whatever, but at least develop her to make her somewhat relevant to the story. I can say the same about Darkness who makes me cringe every time I see her on screen, not only does she make you feel uncomfortable, but she, in fact, is also completely useless and provides nothing to the story whatsoever, she is everything Aqua is but worse. The rest of the cast renders as absolutely irrelevant despite the main cast not contributing much to the show in the first place, you got that chick that runs that shop and then the other chick that does the quests and that's all I can remember. This show produces a cast that's overall bland, forgettable and extremely annoying.

Enjoyment 3/10:

This show was made to be a parody, in particular, it was made to be FUNNY. Most of the jokes I found were super dry and just not my sense of humor. It's also very difficult to enjoy a show that seemingly goes nowhere, I just felt like there was no anticipation for each episode, like I would watch one episode and just turn it off. The best shows are able to excite it's audiences and keep them coming back for more, but this show was unable to do this due to it's weak plot and characters that left you with little to be engaged with.

Overall 3/10:

I'm optimistic that the next season follows a route that's more centered around a journey to a specific goal instead of relying on characters and random events to create a story. I'm not too concerned about the humor at the end of the day because that's probably the most subjective part of this show, but there really needed to be some sort of progression throughout the season. It's textbook to have a beginning, middle and end in stories and I felt that season 1 of Konosuba never left the beginning.

I have no idea how or why mostly every single one of my friends recommended this anime to me: Personally i just feel like it isn't my cup of tea at all. Maybe I would have thought it was hilarious if I had watched it back when it was first released (2016) as I was a minor and the constant perverted jokes would have been more likely to make me laugh, but I just think it got too much when the comedy of the anime does not leave the sexual branch. I want to point out that I do not have anything against dirtier comedy, ... it can be hilarious, I just believe it got to a point where it was too much.

If you are a huge fan of that type of comedy this show might be perfect for you.

I think the show lacks an interesting plot, making it seem exactly like every other isekai. I get that it is a parody but to me personally it just feels like an excuse to make even more terrible isekais. The characters are extremely bland and annoying and had about 0 character development by the final episode. The jokes are always in the same nature, being that the boy (who i presume is 17) is constantly called a perv because of his relationship with his companions.
The opening and ending were very enjoyable in terms of music wise so i will not be complaining about such. The art is great but most of their facial reactions just look odd to me.

The anime isn't impossible to watch and I wouldn't necessarily think it's the worst comedy anime ever, however I do believe it could be better.

I ran this anime for a viewing for our anime/video game server. It was the highest voted option we had so I excitedly watched as the lobby filled the day of the showing.

Three episodes in, i'm starting to think that this is a really bad rip off of the "Reincarnated into a video game" genre that Sword Art Online established, okay, but the people are still enjoying it so I kept it running.

Six episodes in, i've spaced out in between everything because of the constant moaning anime girls and basically and no forward motion taken with the plot , it's just ecchi harem ... garbage that I could've gotten if I just went to Fakku.net, and it honestly would have been better there too.

I truly and honest to god hate the entire "Virgin NEET somehow acquires a harem of big anime tit girls and a couple of lolis and even though he's a major prick he somehow keeps them around" troupe.

Kazuma develops as well as a soft shit in the sun. Darkness is just a walking hentai bait because Megumin is too young to sexualize and Aqua is just a well rounded bitch.

Props to those who can get through this anime without cringing off the face of the earth or without completely refunding their whole Crunchyroll subscription (and if you torrented this then congratulations to you! you don't have to contribute a cent to this mediocre garbage at all and can spend your money on something better like a copy of The Breakfast Club to put in the microwave and set your kitchen on fire)

The only good thing about this anime is the art, which sadly had to be squandered on this jack off bait instead of on something that was written better.

Overall, Its what the people wanted. They all enjoyed it for some reason. But I regret having to sit through 6 hours of a personalized torturous hell.

Welcome to a "The wizard of Oz" not targeted at kids, but teens, that slapped the tag comedy on itself and is holding onto it for dear life, because there is nothing here besides a below average setting, below average characters, below average action, and "comedy" that stops being funny after ep 2 due to how forced and predictable it is.

We've got 4 main characters. Each of them has 1 trait. The main characters are the most unilinear, least thought-out background characters of any good series if their author had snorted a mile and thought of putting them in before dying of OD.

The MC is ... one of those that actually make the anime worse, due to how cringy their lack of substance is. (like Yuuki from Mirai Nikki)

Over the course of 6 years, I tried watching this sh!t 3 times. I never got past episode 4.

If you don't laugh at your own finger if you point it at yourself, and are above 14, there is no way you are going to prefer watching this to doing anything else, from reading a book to going out and picking up the garbage in your neighborhood.

Ive watched Konosuba around a year ago and I still feel the same way about it. The main character is really dumb and short. I feel like there is no plot. Every episode feels like a different story and it is going nowhere. The girls in the series I would rate average. The blue hair girl is really funny and would rate a 10 but it goes back down to a 2 because of her hair color. Im not one to judge someone buy their looks but I do not like this girl because of her blue hair. Blue is just not my favorite color ... and never will be. The art of the story is okay I mean it is the art for any average anime not bad not good. The sounds were cool like the explosions from that loli or whatever. It was enjoying on the ecchi scenes but its only Tv-14 so im like whatever. If ur friend wants you to watch this dont.

KonoSuba is, I think, the second worst anime I have watched this year, next to Gundam ZZ.

KonoSuba follows the exploits of Kazuma, a character that's essentially what Courier Six from Fallout: New Vegas would've looked like if they were a massive soyboy. After the little bitch gets turned into road pizza when Char Aznable runs him over in his red 2006 Honda Civic, he gets teleported to an alternate fantasy world, bringing a literal goddess with him. Unfortunately, this goddess, Aqua, is dumber than a sack of rocks. Together, with the help of the fire demon loli and the blonde BDSM bimbo, they must defeat ... the Demon King, who threatens to conquer this new world....hey wait a minut- *DOOM music starts playing at an extremely high volume*

Now, I want to clarify that I have only seen the first four episodes, and going into it, I genuinely really wanted to love it. However, my main takeaway from those four episodes, and the reason I stopped watching it altogether, is that the show tries to be a jack of all trades, and ends up being a master of none. What do I mean by this? Well, you got the one note asshole/idiot characters and (at least the attempt at) humor of Red vs Blue, the world being based on RPG mechanics, and the demon-slaying story of DOOM. On the surface it sounds like a great combination, but in execution it's one of the messiest shows I have ever watched.

For starters, and I know this is a bold claim, but the show stops being funny after episode 1. Yeah, it's hilarious in the first episode, and then the humor takes a nosedive. Let that sink in. It seems as though after finishing the first episode, the writers thought they could get away with repeating the same sexual jokes ad nauseam (spoilers, they can't, sex jokes, ESPECIALLY ones involving underage characters, are only funny in moderation), and the whole comedy aspect becomes stale very quickly. Also, the main cast do not play off of each other nearly as well as Red vs Blue's characters, and are somehow even more generic archetypes.

So, what about the RPG fantasy world, then? Well, it's an interesting take on these types of anime, I'll give it that, but at the end of the day you'd be better off playing an actual RPG.

I know this anime isn't very story-centric, but the main overarching narrative still managed to disappoint. The story starts getting good at the end of episode 4, but then in right before the episode ends, all the tension and potential is destroyed via contrivances. That was the point when I gave up on the show and went to go play Halo to wash the sour taste out of my mouth.

And I think that best describes KonoSuba: it has potential, but from what I've seen it's never realized. The characters are generic, and not very engaging. The comedy is stale, and not very engaging. And honestly...I was gonna be nice and give it a 5 or a 6, because it does have some genuinely good character moments, but like with Gundam ZZ, I don't think I can forgive or even fully finish an anime with this much wasted potential.

Overall, while not the worst show I've ever watched, the only major positives I can give KonoSuba is 1) it's short, and 2) it's not as bad as Gundam ZZ.

as a purveyor of the very obscure, quirky and dare i say "redpilled" opinion that almost all isekai is trash, i was expecting konosuba to be just what the doctor ordered: an anime poking fun of boring, repetitive isekai tropes with some good comedic writing on the side. but after actually watching it for myself, i think it's... fine, i guess? not an 8/10 by any means, but i suppose enough people think megumin is cute to where it gets a pass.

the most important aspect of any parody anime is obviously the comedy, so is it funny? not very. it often falls back ... on the recurring character traits of the main girls, and these gags get very predictable about halfway through the season when it loses all impact. i did laugh a few times but not enough to where i'd consider the comedy to be well written overall.

this next point might sound weird but i'll try to explain what i mean: this anime could've been a lot funnier if it didn't confine itself to looking, sounding and feeling like a typical isekai. you can tell the voice actors are having fun with their roles, but the art that accompanies these performances don't do such high levels of exaggeration justice.

i would've recommended that the show's promotional art and low-key scenes have it's usual generic art style and switch to a more fluid, cartoony style for the comedy/action scenes, but i've literally just described nichijou so maybe my tastes have just been spoiled by that.

i'll talk about characters from worst to best: kazuma is a slimy little manwhore. i despise him, i don't understand how anyone could possibly like him, and he may actually be the worst male anime protag i've ever seen. he is not a chad or a sigma male, he is a degenerate with no redeeming qualities and should've actually been slain by tractor-chan. see episode 9 (or don't, please don't) to fully comprehend my suffering.

ohhhhh miss lalatina, honey, sweetie, what on earth did those men do to you?? never in my life have i witnessed such an abhorrent waste of a character design as darkness. her gimmick of masochism offends and disgusts me on an astronomical scale, but i can never blame a hypersexualized anime girl for being portrayed as such, even a character like darkness who only shows glimpses of a real personality once every 3 episodes. just a bad look for the writers.

it seems most people perceive aqua as being less likeable that kazuma for reasons that escape me, but i've built up a tolerance for annoying fictional characters and don't think she's that bad. megumin is the least problematic of the main quartet, but that isn't a particularly high bar to pass. i'll always be onboard for adorable arsonists though. none of these characters get any development so it's all whatever.

also, despite it positing itself as a parody of isekai, konosuba's fantasy "worldbuilding" is so bland and indistinguishable from the setting of any other cashgrab isekai that i had to go back and edit this review because i forgot to say anything about it.

if you're looking for a well written subversion of isekai, just watch re:zero. it's almost the complete opposite of a comedy but it's leagues better than this. will not be watching season 2.

The music is nice, especially the opening, very catchy. The animation is ok-ish, too. In regards to characters, and story... well, I know that my opinion is not gonna be well received or shared, but I am going to be blatantly honest.

Characters

The characters are quite flat, but as this is just a parody I was not expecting that much character development. Each one serves as a parody of the common archetypes used in other Isekais (the NEET, the loli, etc.), and they take these personalities to the extreme, but also not in a predictable way, which I have to admit ... is a nice touch.

Story

I was not enjoying this anime that much - It was, supposedly, a "comedy", but I only smiled slightly at the cabbage situation. I understand that humour is subjective, so perhaps it just was not my type. I have to admit that I was getting slowly fed up with the unnecessary and constant fanservice, but I guess that that kind of things are sadly so institutionalized in the field of anime that I cannot really complain about this one, as it was not as evident as in other similar series. I was going to score it with a five, or so. Until episode nine, which is just gross.

The humour in this episode was not humour, at all. They build a character, Darkness, whose personality is based wholly on being a masochist. Again, not my type of humour, but I understand this is a parody of other Isekais, so I get it. Nevertheless, in this episode, we have a situation in which Darkness is not in control at all, as it is not one of her fantasies, and the so-called humour consists of humiliating this character who is clearly uncomfortable. They could have shown Darkness enjoying it, and the humour would have been there too. They just chose deliberately to make a woman submit when she was clearly not enjoying it (i.e. sexual harassment) and portray that as peak comedy, and well... that's not it. This situation feels forced and for the enjoyment of a certain audience sector. They completely ruined the show for me, even if I was not liking it that much. "You can make humour about anything" - well, even if I do not share this opinion, this situation is unjustified and forced, as if the creators have pushed everything wrong consciously to create a "funny" scene, and they got... that.

Well, I started a little while ago in the anime viewing, just to be more interested in this aspect of film production and especially because I started Jojo (but shh... We will talk about it later, when I finished part 5). So I decided to watch Konosuba, it’s 10 small episodes, which have the honorable grade of 8.16 on Myanimelist and 7 on SC(Senscritique is a french site of reviews), which inevitably made me want to see it.

It is therefore an anime similar to the style of Angel Beats!(which by the way did not appreciate too much) , with the famous world after death where ... you have to beat someone to get by. Already not a style that pleases me basic, because I find it quite uninteresting in his talk (what do I have to do with the story of something that can never happen to me (and therefore necessarily, the impossibility to share empathy for the hero))).
So here Kazuma, dead, finds himself projected in a universe of medieval fantasy with three girls named Aqua, Megumin and Darkness.

The anime does not take itself at all seriously and remains a parody of this kind, for my greatest misfortune. Because in the end, the characters don’t really have any stakes, not really a story that could allow them to become attached to them. They have no personality (especially the 3 girls). Darkness may be a masochist, but it is more a joke than a serious personality. And so there is its greatest flaw. Indeed, the fact that the characters have no personality prevents any real alchemy between them and any emotional attachment for the spectator.

This lack of tragic side is a real problem, because any well-made comedy (it’s verifiable you have to know!) has a deeply tragic side. All you have to do is see Chaplin’s films to realize that every joke, every gag, every comic situation is just a tragic situation hidden in comedy.
I agree with Bruno Dumont (my favorite director, and we will talk about Ma loute right after) when he says that the comic is only a register, only a scale of the tragic.
And so we go back to Chaplin, in the circus, the history is profoundly tragic, a poor man who will fall in love with a woman who is under the influence of his father and is ill-treated. And this tragic treatment of history is important to be able to make laugh, as a kind of rejection of this tragic element.Or in The Kid, where Chaplin gets an orphan and he’s going to be separated. Events are treated with tragedy, to destroy this tragedy by an outbidding that will be the gag. Besides this lack of tragic side (which does not mean either that if there had been more tragic, there would have been less comedy, on the contrary!), there is also a problem in what it says, because yes... Thematically it doesn’t tell much, or at least nothing good original.
What’s crazy is that we’re in a world of magic, where it would be possible to have a crazy originality in this world, stupid stuff with various universes that might have no consistency, but no, we’re still in this city(which, by the way, I feel like a stranger because we know nothing about this city...). And I think it’s too bad, we just wait for something to happen or learn more about heroes.

(Note also that the excessive fan service is useless, when it could have been justified simply by talking about the awakening of sexuality in Kazuma...)

Let’s come back to the relationship between tragedy and comedy with the film Ma loute by Bruno Dumont. It’s probably one of the most hilarious films I’ve ever seen, and it’s all because of this mixture of tragedy and comedy, two registers that mix very well. Indeed, Dumont made in his film the opposite of Konosuba, and that’s why it works. It deals with serious themes such as the love between a poor and a bourgeois, transsexuality, social revenge, the insect among the bourgeois and philosophical research through the search of the inspector machin. And all these themes a serious treatment like that of transsexuality or on the contrary in a very comical way with incest between the bourgeois. This makes it possible to show the correctness of the characters but also to keep a satirical side. And at the bottom, it is simply just and deep.
Konosuba does the opposite, THEY LAUGH WITH EVERYTHING, which means that after a while we can no longer and it just gets us drunk, we saturate.

Finally the animation, it is certainly not ugly, but not ultra original. One of the only combat scenes is poorly filmed, poorly mounted, badly cut. Never the anime tries plans that express something, never the anime tries to speak through a cinematographic language.

In short, it is an anime that poorly manages its comic and therefore prevents any attachment with the characters, it does not bring any reflection or even simply a theme well treated, it does not have an overflowing originality and above all, in terms of animation and staging, it is far from excellent. I’ll never understand why everyone puts him on so well.

Interesting enough premise, but terrible art and just not funny at all. It's pretty easy to see where the jokes are and why they should be funny, but something about the show is just off and instead of a moment of humor, it's just nothing. The most obvious, but not the only, reason is that some of the characters go too far with the "character is epitome of X trope" It gets old real fast, it's lazy, and has the effect of making the show watch more as a study of psychological pathology or horror than a comedy. And a boring one at that.

A total ... waste of a Megumin and her glorious explosions. smh

My boyfriend and I made a trade-off, I would watch 3 episodes of something he liked (this) and he would watch something I liked (JoJo) and while he binge watched the whole series I couldn't bring myself to watch more than 4 episodes of this.

The art gets high praise from some people but I just don't see it, the animation is clunky, the facial expressions are supposed to be funny, I guess, but just don't come across that way thanks to the bad animation. All the female characters are completely useless, which is fine, but they're annoying to boot and overused as the butts ... of pervy jokes.

The comedy is too in your face for me, and I don't see where the innovation is that people are talking about? Everyone's saying that they're making fun of the "character ends up in a different world and is super powerful trope" and while I've not watched many anime of this genre and don't know if there's one where the whole team is useless I do know that there are plenty where at least a couple of characters of the cast suck.

Personally I can't enjoy this anime because nothing about it appeals to me and I don't understand the high scores it's getting but kudos to anyone that can find some joy in it.
