Ansatsu Kyoushitsu

Tucked in the mountains near the elite Kunugigaoka Middle School lies a small derelict building that houses the delinquents and dropouts of Class 3-E. Looked down upon by their peers, the students in this class appear to have little hope in advancing their academic careers. That is, until the national government tasks them with eliminating the greatest threat to their planet: their new teacher.

Having already destroyed the moon, the octopus-like professor—dubbed "Koro-sensei"—has now threatened to destroy the Earth by March of the following year. In light of their mission, the students have found that killing him is easier said than done. Not only can Koro-sensei move at speeds of up to Mach 20, but he can also resist almost every earthly weapon. Ironically, he also proves to be one of the best teachers Class 3-E has ever had. Training the class to excel in both their studies as students and skills as assassins, Koro-sensei is confident that his students' ingenuity and indomitable will could return them to the main campus.

Through trial and error, Nagisa Shiota, as well as the other students of Class 3-E, must figure out Koro-sensei's weaknesses—and fast, for the very fate of the world depends upon it.

This is a standalone review of the anime adaptation. The original material is beyond the scope of this review and is not a factor for consideration.

Story: The story very quickly established its promise very early on but cleverly substituted this promise in the final episodes in order to set up the climax at the end of the season. Further evidence of high-quality writing are evidenced in the show's pacing: despite each episode resembling a standalone, monster-of-the-week ordeal that delved into a specific character's arc, progress towards the overarching goal is clearly visible and there are no episodes that felt like filler. The final payoff at ... the end of the season was equally fantastic and truly felt like the culmination of every character's arc. Some foreshadowing is present but the show leaned more toward the 'unpredictable plot twist' end of the spectrum as opposed to the 'viewer can figure it out if they read between the lines' end of the spectrum. While much of the comedic humour is handed brilliantly, there are unfortunately some places where the insertion of comedic elements disrupted important character or narrative moments.

Character: The characters are really where this show shined. In spite of the massive cast, a large majority of the support characters received an excellent amount of character development. Even so, the cast was so large that some characters never got any time in the spotlight despite each episode attempting to flesh out at least one or two new characters. The villains received a surprisingly substantial amount of character development of their own. Ironically, it was actually the main characters who felt somewhat neglected as they received about the same amount of attention as the support characters.

Visual: The visuals were consistently above-average in quality throughout the entire season with some truly stunning sequences complemented by fluid animation. The character designer(s) did a fantastic job: the large cast of characters are all visually distinctive, but, unfortunately, the students do tend to suffer from 'same face syndrome'.

Audio: The sound design and music were excellent, adding substantial weight and emotion to critical scenes. The (Japanese) voice acting was great with standout performances including Fukuyama Jun, who perfectly switches between Koro-sensei's nonsensical antics and serious demeanour, and Itō Shizuka's admirable attempts at pronouncing foreign languages correctly as the multinational assassin Irina Jelavić.

Enjoyment: I personally found the show thoroughly enjoyable. In addition to developing the large cast of characters, each episode contained either an amazing action sequence or a character moment that made it highly memorable though naturally some episodes stood out to me more than others. Hayasaka Ritsu's character arc in 'Episode 9: Transfer Student Time' is probably one of my all-time favourite character arcs in anime. Unfortunately, I did not find any of the opening or closing themes to my liking, though I can report that I am in the minority opinion on this matter.

Mixed Feelings

The music is fine but gets repetitive and overused, especially in the latter half.
The art style is very formulaic in the sense that no specific scene will stand out or stick with you visually.
The character growth is the only plus because it's satisfying to watch some of them grow even if it's very predictable.

In all honesty, it's ok. The only thing really holding this anime back is the pacing and the fluff. There are a couple of episodes where it just feels unnecessary to the overall plot and a couple of times where a specific scene or scenario is slowed down to show ... growth that will never be called back to. But then again, it fits the genre exactly.

TLDR: It's very formulaic and that's ok.

Now before people start raging at me for my opinion, i want to make it clear that i really enjoyed the second season, enough to give it an 8. The writer for this season was different than that of the writer of the second season, i think this directing is what makes this part seem so much worse. This watch was not even enjoyable imo, i was rather frustrated while watching this program. Without further ado lets get into it.

Story: 4.5/10
While i enjoy the concept of this super human being threatening to destroy the earth while working as a teacher, the concept is the only ... good thing about this batch. My problem lies with the lack of forethought from the writer of this manga and the government in the fictional story. Who the **** allowed this alien creature to sit in a room and teach while time ticked down. IDC what sensei offered, this is the dumbest decision to ever be made from a government in reality or fiction. They put full faith in a class of children to learn how to kill the global threat. While there was potential for interesting episode dynamics, they waste this time to show some idiotic scenes. They have sensei, Infront of the entire class when every student has ak 47s, they all shoot and he can dodge them all (prolly hundreds of bullets a second). Only to have a serious arc where a government sniper might shoot sensei and finally kill him (Did they expect viewers to believe one bullet would suddenly do the job?). The writing is extremely inconsistent and treats its viewers like they cant remember the previous episode. An absolute botchfest. Any of the emotional beats would not come until the second season.

Main/Side Characters: 4/10
Show me one individual that can name all 20 students in the classroom..... the author bit way more than he could chew. Besides Karma there is no one even above average here. I thought Sensei was more annoying than funny. Bro would gloat about not being killed by 12 year olds.

Antagonists: 3/10
Oh no, bad government guys who are simply just trying to save the earth...... this would be fine if it wasnt wrote like the government was the scum of the earth (I was cheering for the government tbh).

Power System/Action: 4.5/10
Its fine, Sensei being overpowered can be exciting for a few scenes but most other actions are pretty lame assassination attempts. Wtf is a clap of doom lmao. Mostly just unorganized gun shots.

Comedy: 2/10
I was too busy being angry with the writing competency of the author. comedy is subjective but this was not amusing at all.

Art: 7/10
Actually pretty decent, not bad animation for its time and decent speed shots when attempting to show Sensei's speed. Nothing bad or jaw dropping.

Music/Openings: 2.5/10
The first 2 openings are actually E or F tier. They are soooo boring and generic with the students all doing one dance move for the whole 1:30. Its more jarring when you see how good the 3 and 4th opening are.

Story/Conclusion: 5/10
Not the true ending to the story but at least it ends with an okay arc with the tower.


Final Notes:
If you like to smoke or dont mind watching something that doesn't require thought this is for you. I honestly don't know if this season is worth pushing through to get to the better moments in season 2.
