DRAMAtical Murder

Some time ago, the influential and powerful Toue Inc. bought the island of Midorijima, Japan, with the plans of building Platinum Jail—a luxurious utopian facility. Those who are lucky enough to call it home are the wealthiest citizens in the world. The original residents of the island, however, were forced to relocate to the Old Residential District; and after the completion of Platinum Jail, they were completely abandoned.

"Rib" and "Rhyme" are the most common games played on the island. Rib is an old school game in which gangs engage in turf wars against each other, while Rhyme is a technologically advanced game wherein participants fight in a virtual reality. To be able to play Rhyme, you must have an "All-Mate" (an AI that typically looks like a pet), and the match must be mediated by an "Usui."

Aoba Seragaki has no interest in playing either game; he prefers to live a peaceful life with his grandmother and All-Mate, Ren. However, after getting forcefully dragged into a dangerous Rhyme match and hearing rumors about disappearing Rib players, all of Aoba's hopes of living a normal life are completely abolished.

I haven't played the visual novel of Dramatical Murder and probably don't plan to in the near future because I don't like too much gore, but the character designs really appealed to me, so I thought let's give the anime a try instead. Honestly, I loved it. I wasn't expecting the plot to be this deep and thought-provoking. I'm a hardcore fan of the Persona series, and I feel Dramatical Murder had elements of the self-acceptance themes that Persona has too, so I really enjoyed it. I found Clear's story to be the most heart-warming out of all, plus his melodious jelly fish song is ... just the icing on the cake. I feel like the anime was kinda rushed though and it could have had more episodes, but then it's an anime adaptation of a visual novel so I get that they sped up through certain parts. I feel like I would've liked more of a character depth given to Virus and Trip as to why exactly they wanted Aoba for themselves (maybe I just didn't understand that part well) and also some of Sei's past.

Mixed Feelings

This show is so bad it's good at times. As a fan of the games (get them on steam/JAST, it's cheap and better than the anime!), I mostly watched it to see some of my favourite scenes animated.
I think it's supposed to be watched after you play the games, and that's the only way I'd recommend it, can't imagine anyone getting into DMMd from just watching the anime alone. It's really poorly produced, so much so that it was incredibly funny to watch, but we did also get a bunch new songs SO as bad as it was I'm grateful it happened :) also ... them actually having Clear sing his jellyfish song was great, as a Clearfan I am content.

All in all the story is incredibly rushed, I don't think I'd have absorbed anything from it just watching it alone.

Support the game! Don't have your experience ruined by watching the anime before the game!

Dear lord...
Who is this anime for, really? If ypu didn't play the original visual novel, that this anine is (kinda) based on: I strongly recommend you skipping this obe and go play the game instead. It's so much better to enjoy the story that way and you will get the actual whole picture.
If you played the visual novel and want to see the characters move...go for it I guess. Unfortunately for all fans of the original BL game, you won't find any L in here. And since that was the main part of the story honestly, there is nothing much left. I ... addition to that you have basically all 5 different routs combined and pressed into 12 episodes. The characters have not enough time on screen to really connect to. You get basically a speed run of each route in one episode and a somewhat strange shift to the next one so the story can combine them all in one.
This anime reminded me of 90's OVAs tbh. Not much budget, not much story, not much character development. And it's kinda sad, since the actual game made me cry buckets on sone routes.
