I'm glad that you also like Maison Ikkoku. I watched it not so long ago and it has become one of my favourite animes. It just feels so different from any other story. Let me know if you have any recommendation

Three of his movies Pigs and battleships, the Insect Woman and The Ballad of Narayama both concentrate on the morals and everyday life of the lower classes. Pigs and battleships is set in the post-war era and shows through the story of a lowly yakuza how the american influence corrupted japan and its society. The Ballad of Narayama is an interesting one because it is set in the middle of the XIX century in a rural village and it is extremely honest and brutal in its way not veiling the dark side of the peasants's struggle for everyday living (I should add it won the Palme d'Or). Insect women is maybe my favourite of these three. Though its title makes it seem to be a horror movie, it is not one, it should have been translated to "Japanese insectology" instead. It tells the story of the struggle of a low born woman and then that of her daughter, the later one played by the beauty Jitsuko Yoshimura who I am sure you know from Onibaba (If you haven't watched that movie you should)

His movie the Profound Desires of the Gods is similar to The Ceremony in that it shows a family that members have incestuous relationship with each other though in this case they are living on the fringe of the society. It is maybe his most controversal but in the same time most interesting film.

I have seen his movie Vengeance Is Mine as well, though that I didn't like much. It tells the story of a psychopath murderer trying to avoid being catched by the police.
