The official website for animation studio Khara's final installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, announced on Friday that the film's theatrical release will be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It was scheduled to premiere on June 27. A key visual (pictured right) was also released featuring the film's new English title—Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

A handwritten statement from original creator, general director, planner, and screenwriter Hideaki Anno was posted on the official website. In his statement, Anno expresses sympathy for those affected by the virus, gratitude for medical workers and others fighting it, and apologizes to fans of the franchise for the many delays the film has faced.

Briefly revealed with a 2013 premiere on New Year's Eve in 2011, it was soon delayed to 2015. In October 2014, its premiere was postponed once again due to Anno's commitment as director for the live-action film Shin Godzilla. Production would resume and the first ten minutes of the film were screened at a number of events worldwide on July 6 last year.

With Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 previously scheduled to premiere a little more than two months from now, the official website released a comprehensive list of key staff members involved in its production. In addition to the previously announced staff, and Anno himself as credited above, the following contributed to the film:

I don't even care anymore. After the terrible 3, I just want to get this over with.

I couldn’t care less the rebuild movies weren’t the same
Call me old or what ever I don’t care

Neon genesis Evangelion was more about angels or the evas or the impacts or the action

It was todo with the human mind the suffering of individuals the loneliness the acceptance of change and it wasn’t just shinji but every character it was more psychological the original anime and movies from the 1990s

These rebuilds are just rushed no importance on characters more on the storyline than any thing and action and action and more modern anime art form I guess

Anno just did it to give fans what they wanted and he also wanted to introduce the anime franchise to the new generation

But trust me on this the old anime series and the movies are wholesome not because their old age has nothing todo with it but the message the films have .

The rebuilds had no message or depth

At this point the only thing keeping me waiting is my love for Evangelion. at this points these adaptions are just entertainment as much as I'd hate to say it Ikind of saw it coming

I love nge but last few rounds of adaptions could have called an end. I just like to see how they continue it

I'm not up to date with the Evangelion franchise, but I faintly recall hearing about an Evangelion movie in a "Best upcoming animes this year" Youtube video years ago, probably 2018 since I remember a Violet Evergarden teaser being in the Video as well.

I hope it won't be delayed even more. It is such a shame that an Anime gets postponed for such a long time

This is probably the most delayed piece of media I´ve ever waited for

I have been wait 7 years already, a bit more is understandable, all the more considering the situation.

Really when the movie comes out and in BD, and we get to see it, it will be a funny experience, expectations aside, because it just has been so long and I recall over the years coming here to chat and discuss whenever fans got news about it.

Ah, yeah, I have completely forgotten about the BD release, which will take some time, too. Welp.

Hopefully, the maestro will also make some epicness for the fans; I do not know if I want to see more the movie, or hear the new pieces of Shiro Sagisu, lol.

Well, I hope for some really cool new stuff, I think the OST for 3.33 was as good as 2.22's, so lets hope the composer gone out with a bang for this movie.

Saw that yesterday on Twitter... I watched Evangelion when it came out in 1995 or somewhere in the 90s and I was REALLY impressed by what I was watching. It was when I got to know anime a lot more so Evangelion has a special place in my heart!

It has taken so long for Anno to finish Rebuild I am genuinely surprised none of the voice actors have died on him yet.

I'm disappointed but it's to be expected. Man, this spring/summer is such a drag.

I mean at this point delay or not it doesn’t change that much after so many years of waiting and waiting

Apr 20, 2020 5:07 AM by Xenocrisi

It's been so many years. This delay doesn't' surprise me one bit and I wasn't expecting anything from it very soon either. It's a surprise in itself that it was supposed to premiere this year.

Now I have time to catch up on Evangelion because I still need to watch Death and rebirth and The End of Evangelion

I will respectfully steal another internet user's joke concerning this delay, which is a week old as well:

You can (not) release.

Exactly.
Rebuild have been such a bad attempt to change things in the saga that I just want to see how it ends. I couldn´t care less about the plot or characters anymore, just end this bitch already.
