Remember MAL: The Japanese are Watching You

I was browsing around some Japanese blogs over the holidays when I ran into an interesting little site which I thought I would share with our fine community. If I've got my kanji right, it's called 誤訳御免! ("Goyaku Gomen!") which I'm thinking means roughly "Mistranslation Permitted!" In any event, the site is a blog which looks at foreign (i.e., Western) websites devoted to Japanese culture, translates the material (mostly forum posting) into Japanese, and then has a large contingent of Japanese readers post their reaction to the Western comments. There is usually one forum thread per day translated and posted, always about Japanese culture, but mostly about anime.

The blog has been around for two years, and features translations of threads on sites like ANN, Dannychoo, Youtube, Animesuki, et. al. But lately I've noticed one site has been featured quite often. One guess which one.

For example, HERE'S an interesting little translation and discussion of our recent discussion of Strange things you do while/after watching anime... They don't translate every response -- only the ones they find interesting in some way. And in this article, they seem especially interested in you all who answered "FAP" to this question. Also note how someone felt proud at getting the first response on this thread about our thread. Also notice how their threads about our threads often get more responses than the original ones here. Just think about that.

There are several more MAL threads in there. Navigate around a little to find them.

I was somewhat tempted not to post this at all, since this is probably breaking some sort of anthropological taboo, where the "watched must not know they're watched lest it taint the experiment." But then it occurred to me that everyone really needs to see that GIF of the kitten washing itself in the upper right hand corner, so science be damned.

Be on good manners, people. And if this thread ends up on there and they comment on our commenting of their comments of our comments, my mind will be officially blown.

This is pretty common for them to find our interactions with their culture interesting. I found it extremely interesting watching the Japanese foreign exchange students that lived with me when I was younger react to all the western stuff. Especially Star Wars, they loved Star Wars(this was around the time that episode 1 came out).

I don't know why this is supposed to be all that interesting. I'm more of the kind of person to just sign up for a site if I want to know more about it, even if it's a new language.

Lol, "most kawaiest," yea that is definitely a common phrase in the weeaboo's arsenal. I hope to god they don't think most of us use that term.... or any phrase like that.

I didn't realize it already had happened -- I ran the website through the search just in case and I couldn't think of anything useful beyond search terms like "MyAnimeList", "translated", and "Japanese", which produce results like you'd expect. If a forum mod wishes to close this, they can do so at their convenience.

I'm guessing this is the Lolis thread you're talking about, along with a couple other ones I looked at yesterday:

Why you like lolis?
Would You Name Your Child After An Anime Character?
Winter 2008/09 List

From my own point of view, the most interesting posts are not the "otaku-centric" ones, but rather the ones that comment on individual episodes, like this one from last week that talks about how we saw the first episode of the new Hajime no Ippo series. I've always had the firm belief that the Internet has produced one of the most profound changes in anime viewing ever -- the ability to virtual "group watch" a show and share your feelings/ideas in an instantaneous format rather than the necessity to watch in anime clubs or on your own, leading to almost no interaction regarding actual criticism and excitement about shows (outside of magazines, and usually spread out over months or even years), which is how it was for most of my life. The addition of one further layer to this grand metanarrative is just fascinating for me.

Here, I'll do a little translating on the loli one:

1 (Replying to support love picture)
What the hell? lol

2
Looks like there's a lot of different types [of people on this site]
But they're just blowing hot air about little girls lol

3
(This post wasn't a reply to the MAL thread)

4
Someone go tell them about backbeard lol
(Googling says backbeard is apparently a 2ch-created shadow monster who goes after lolis)

5
It's troubling how normal people automatically assume that otaku are loli lovers.

6
Seems like women all have a negative opinion.. (I'm assuming he means a negative opinion of otaku, in response to the previous comment)
But I guess that goes without saying..
Then again, even women will see a newborn girl and feel affectionate for her.
Women are complicated...

11 (Replying to 6)
That has nothing to do with loli. (Basically pointing out that the affection a woman feels for a little girl and the affection a lolicon feels for one is a totally different thing)

Discussion kind of continues along those lines and whatnot, obviously not gonna type out the whole 100+ comments in English ;).

But it has everything to do with moe :3

Loli is definitely one of those terms that hold different meaning in Eastern and Western otaku slang. Though I can't speak for everyone, the vast majority of anime fans I talk with, including myself, use loli is a blanket term for any little girl in anime. Apparently, the first place they go to with that term is OMG CHRIS HANSEN RUN.

P.S. I counted the number of posts they translated. They got me clocked in at 8, from 3 different anime forums. Lol I'm being stalked by Elevens.

Exactly what I thought when I first saw the cat, but yes, Boursk has actually posted about this website before when a certain loli thread that they analysed got google translated or something. Interesting to actually hear more about how this website operates, though. I thought that the loli thread may have just been an exception because it was about lolis.
