THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Once again Funimation is on top of it. Not really sure what to say about the episode since it was rather uneventful (basically all setup). I suppose I'm mostly worried that the series might get axed before it gets to go anywhere, since episodes like this seem unlikely to boots its already struggling ratings.

^^True fact, but for now, I'll enjoy what's streamed to us.

-Today was fairly uneventful but it's odd that I can still be into the show without a lot of stuff happening. It's clearly the character interactions that make up the meat of this show and there are not even a ton of those. However, what is presented on the table for some reason just catches my attention and I think that each episode is nice to watch. I'm not exactly "dying" to catch the next one like some of the other spring shows.

-That being said, when the hostage rolled out of the basket on Ume's back, I had a good fit of giggles.

-Is it me or as I'm getting more used to the art style, Otake-san is getting kind of attractive....

Heck, I think Yaichi is pretty sexy & Akitsu is moe...in his own way of course xD

Episode-wise, it was OK.
I think I'm starting to realize this show may be a bit too boring for my tastes. I'm all up for interesting character development but it's just not doing it for me. It's a bit too...bland. I'll give this show one more episode & see.

For all I know, it can turn awesome out of nowhere & I'm afraid to drop it & miss out on everything. The same thing almost happened to me with Paranoia Agent, but just barely did I stick around to realize the show was pretty freakin' great in the end.

Masa/Yaichi doujin nao pls! Seriously, I really do wonder how close to shounen ai this series is going to get. Masa can't stop thinking about Yaichi and Yaichi can't take his eyes off Masa. X3

And I agree with above, the art style is unusual but seems to make everyone appear fairly attractive.

Masa join the darn group already! Shesh. =P
I don't think i can deal with him being half-heartedly in the group for much longer. The character depth is starting to appear but that's not enough to make up for the lack of things actually happening in this episode. (The hostage was mildly entertaining however i must say.)
Likewise with the above; the art is casually being accepted by my eyes. Of course, when i started watching they were screaming in pain, but i realized that having this unique art style is actually an enhancer to the show.

I liked it. It does not try to be something it is not, and is relaxing so far. I am also wondering how close to shonen-ai this will get.

lol sometimes I really get the feeling that I'm watchin shounen ai instead of a seinen. well the author has made BL mangas so I guess it's not that big of a suprise really.
But anyway I like watchin this show..It's a bit slow but also relaxing and I really love the art ^^

@garfield15: I always thought Otake-san was attractive, but then again I watched Reign and lost the ability to tell right from wrong. Many of the aspects people seem to consider goofy or weird about the art style are actually somewhat common in yaoi, so I suspect people familiar with the genre are having less trouble adapting.

@Bunny-kins: While I admit I'm having allot of trouble predicting this anime, I suspect if you're looking for something epic to happen you'll be disappointed. This anime seems like it's going to stay rather subtle and reserved until the end.

As of all the Yaichi/Akitsu enthusiasts, so not happening but do be prepared for 10 more episodes of being teased. If it does happen, I'll eat my own dick; seriously, fork and knife, there will be screenshots.

I don’t know why so many people have problems with Sarai-ya’s designs. But it was similar for many with the designs of Tenku no Escaflowne.

Somehow I like these designs much better than many of the things I’ve seen recently. Not only do they look more mature, but also quite elegant and flowing, which fits into the atmosphere of the show. It has been very relaxing as of this episode. I am looking forward to what is next!

Ok, scratch what I said about character design, after the last episode. Mea culpa, I was actually liking it by the end of this episode x3 Very different from what we see everywhere.

I am really liking this show, its a refreshing change of pace from just about every other anime this season . I wasn't sure about the art at first but by the end of the first episode I had grown accustomed to it and by this episode I started to really enjoy the style.

Yeah, I can already feel the disappointment seeping out.
It's just my attention-span is wandering around onto other things & not so much on the show now. I was optimistic at first, but now I'm just anticipating for something interesting, to actually happen :/

...and I really wanted to like this series too.
I can still hope.

1. I wasn't sure about the art at first, but I think I like it. If nothing else this anime is not trying to be anything else.

2. Subtle is obviously the intended style here, and I don't think that means that it won't go anywhere. Actually, I am pretty curious about where the plot will run off to. I imagine by the time the viewers see the plot coming the show will already be well into the middle of it. . . . or at least that is what I hope . . . that we haven't really seen the genius of this anime.

3. It is too early to tell if this show will become a massive success or failure. So I am going to keep watching it just to see. As long as they don't cave into popular demand and turn the show into a copy of everything else out there to make it more appealing to a wider audience, it won't be a total waste of time.

This show is my favorite of the season, it gives me what I want. I'm absolutely not disappointed, I like slow paced seinen shows (even tough I like shounens too), and I love everything that has to do something with samurais. The art is incredible, and I like the characterdesigns too.

Anyway, can't say that this is uninteresting, but neither is it that interesting...
But what's interesting, is that damn art. I wonder if I'll get used to it over time. O.o
And to put it this way, the episode sure went by faster than the first episode : p

I'm really liking the slow pacing and careful character development. It all feels very natural and the calm progression is something that many people who are used to constant shounen action probably will never appreciate.

I'm not a big Yaoi fan, but I can appreciate some shounen-ai if it's done well and isn't too over the top for me. Still I'm really hoping that this show isn't going to become a love story between Yaichi and Akitsu. It's giving off some series indicators that it might be leaning that way though. Wouldn't that be funny if the whole show was ode to the tent scene in Broke Back Mountain. LoL

I only have one complaint about this show so far. I know it's Manglobe, and Samurai Champloo set the precedent for contemporary music in samurai anime, but this show really doesn't need to have some generic j-pop as its OP. Not a big deal, I guess, but there's no need for it. I don't think the ED fits with the show's mood/atmosphere either, for that matter. Most of the BGM, aside from the odd piece, is thankfully much better for the subdued tone and setting.

Beyond that, thoroughly enjoying this so far.

Also, upon giving it some thought... The dynamic between Masa and Ichi is reminding me vaguely of Guts and Griffith — with the Five Leaves being the equivalent of the Band of the Hawk. Obviously, Masa is quite a different character from Guts, but his loneliness strikes me as something they have in common, and Ichi could easily remind one of Griffith in a number of ways. I don't know if it's too soon to say anything concrete, but if there is any similarity it's subtle. Still, the way things are playing out is interesting...

That tree scene~ xDD Keep on looking at him, Yaichi. You just keep on looking.

Seriously though, I'm appreciating the calm pacing of the story and I'm warming up to the characters. I'm sure things will start picking up, but if it doesn't I wouldn't mind as long as the plot is progressing in some way.

Loved the character development. Loved the art as usual. I like the slow pace of this anime. It gives you the chance to sink in their world and enjoy every moment of it. This is not a shounen anime for the characters to have nothing to do but jump around and get involved in lots of events the whole time. Characters here actually live a life and I like that.

Mixed feelings for this show, but definitely nothing bad. I actually also liked some of the background music in this episode; it gives the show a nice melancholy feel coupled with the interesting art.

It's kind of funny how nobody ever expects anime to be subtle enough to avoid being defined as either fanservice or yaoi, when a character might be gay. I mean, it would be weird if we defined any film with gay characters as "gay cinema" or even some term that equated it to gay porn, wouldn't it? For example, if Brokeback Mountain were anime it would be called yaoi, but since it's a live-action film... it's not; it's just a romantic drama. Why should anime always have to be classified in such a way based on the sexual orientation of its characters? I find this irksome.

Point being, I think it's obvious that even if Ichi is gay, this is not your average yaoi. There is no need to think of it in such terms. I'm sure plenty of anime fans will, though, and this is just one of those things I hate about anime fandom...

Brokeback Mountain is a romantic gay western, those are just the main themes that lead to categorization and genre designation. That is also not to mention the differences between cultures and Languages. That fact that you take issue to labels even the ones that the "gay" and " lesbian" community have come up with for themselves is your own issue with stereotyping. I wouldn't classify Brokeback mountain as Yaoi in Japanese anyways, but more shounen-ai with some Yaoi elements. But I would be wrong of course because BBM isn't an Anime and Japanese apparently makes a distinction. We obviously don't have a genre or word in English that describes Gay oriented cartoons mostly meant to titillate a young to middle aged female demographic. English also definitely doesn't have a word that I know of to distinguish platonic boy on boy love either other than friendship which in no way includes any romantic connotations. Basically it seems that your beef lies with art of linguistics.

I liked your earlier comparison with Berserk's Gutts and Griffith and wouldn't hate this series if Yaichi and Akitsu ended up being gay. It's basically just a sexual preference that I wouldn't want to continue watching the series if they became romantically involved and moved towards a sexual relationship. As long as they kept it discrete, like Paradise Kiss and Berserk, I think I could still really enjoy the series.

Your comment about Anime fandom also seems a little misplaced considering the Anime community is probably one of the most diverse and twisted group of people that inhabit the planet when it comes down to the amount of Yaoi, Yuri, and Incest Hentai that is absorbed and loved by so many Anime fans. It really is just a matter of preference and taste. Different strokes for different folks. Right? I think your comment is more aimed at the average Shounen Anime fandom which seems to be confused with Anime Fandom as whole so often lately. Do Naurto and Bleach fans really encompass what it is to be an anime fan? Of course not, and I'm pretty sure that even many of the Naruto, Bleach and OnePiece fans would probably like series like Berserk that had some shounen-ai elements. Or I could be wrong of course, but isn't their a gay character in Bleach too?
