Wow, What a backstory. Made my heart really heavy. All Yuki ever wanted was someone to notice him and care about him. He wanted a mother figure in his life where his parents couldn't be. For him, Tohru became the mother figure for him because Tohru never shows signs of disliking him for who he is. She always cared about what Yuki had to say or what he did. This hits hard in my heart. It was interesting to see that Akito wasn't that bad too be honest in the beginning until he snapped.

After this episode, I wonder why Akito snapped and become a twisted person.

This was a good episode, seeing the backstory of Yuki and what he desired the most and finally finding it in Tohru, a mother figure.

I was wondering the same thing. it sounded like he felt unbelievably trapped since his whole world was black.

I lost controll of my tears at that end, what Yuki went through is probably the worst,
imo it was worse than Kyo's situation, Yuki at least had someone but Yuuki was trashed away by everyone and i mean everyone.

11/10 for the episode.

another very emotional episode..... yuki TT__________________________________TT
his back story was so heavy & relatable, so sad.... poor yuki....

(i wish the hat was red like in the manga, why did they change it to blue.....)

i just locked myself in my own shell. i rejected the world to protect myself. i was hopeless. but she appeared before the hopeless me once again. to be with me, close to me. she even listened to what someone like me had to say. she wasn't disgusted and didn't scold. time after time. she accepted me time and time again. she's beloved to me. like how the sky feels so close, yet so far.
that was beautiful....the voice acting at that last part "like a mother"....wow, shimazaki nobunaga really nailed this episode.

but i’ll probably remember over and over again
you were there and everyone else was there

Surprisingly, Kyo is one of the most popular characters in the series...But he always shifted the blame on Yuki to make him feel better. Kyo never attempted to see past the zodiac fable, and get to know him. That's why I disliked Kyo.

Yuki was one of my most loved characters in the show. He is my second favorite. He is so relatable. His yearning to make friends, his tendency to hold back, etc.

omg thank you for this!! This is EXACTLY how I've felt about furuba, yuki, and kyo for the past 12 years.. I wish that more people would like Yuki, his backstory and character development is just so amazing and I always get sad when people say he is boring...

Even after everything I am still a dedicated yukixtohru shipper (they really do complement each other well!!), and I've always felt that the mom-zoning thing was just an easy out to accelerate the kyoxtohru ship (I also love this ship don't get me wrong) but from reading the manga, I sensed that he did actually have some romantic feelings for tohru.. so even if this ship couldn't sail the least that I would have liked was for him to acknowledge those feelings and then move on.. ^^;

I know that I'm biased because he is my favorite, but yuki always gets overshadowed by kyo stans, which is really unfortunate.. kyo is a great character though!! my first impression of him wasn't great since I didn't like how he kept picking a fight with yuki, but even after getting to know his character better, it just didn't stuck a chord with me the same way that yuki did

Yuki's character is such a major part of the fruits basket storyline so I really feel that he deserves more love from watchers <3

THERE we go. Finally X)
I guess the anime's version of closing the YukiXTohru ship wasn't bad. Took a bit of time, but it was done well.

Man, I love Furuba so much. It can go from lighthearted and funny to sorrowful and deep. Love love love.

Chibi Tohru crying is too cute xD Her mom is so badass as always XD

This comes in as a late comment/opinion about the episode and my defense over Kyou.

Okay, so this whole episode was just...amazing, while I haven't been the biggest fan of Yuki, but never disliked him, his past was well-explored and we got to know the reason why the way he acted. Y'know, the most curious thing about Yuki and Kyou, they could have been the bestest of friends if the Sohma family system wasn't messed up.

And I understand why people don't fancy Kyou, but yet, we have to explore further into his past, Yuki's past is done exploring and it's time to dig into Kyou's when S3 airs in (probs) Spring 2021.

But the reason of why Kyou was acting the way he did, just imagine being shunned by everyone, being the scapegoat of everything that happens, his mother's suicide, his biological father's ignorance and neglect, people's negative thoughts of him and etc, of course a child's life would go down and think negatively. He didn't have proper friends and if he didn't get thoughts of Yuki being a bad person, they could have been friends, even best friends if it happened. He was led to believe Yuki's future was going to be bright, he was led to believe Yuki was going to be happier than him and he was led to believe Yuki was going to have freedom while Kyou will be locked up for the rest of his life. To be the object of hatred and dislike and blame...I actually feel bad for Kyou.

Edit: I feel like Kyou is one hell of a misunderstood character and I know he is one of them, I misunderstood Izusu the time I saw her for the first time, but it all cleared out once I watched her backstory.

So they explain how Yuki, Kyo and Tohru fates are connected with the hat! But the most curious thing was Akito original personality before madness. He was not born cruel, something horrible will have happened. Never be a fan of Yuki too but I appreciate that they try to humanize him and give him reasons!

When Yuki in his rat form started crying because he felt useful I bawled my eyes out. Man, knowing Yuki's past, his resilience and strength are impressive. After surviving such a traumatic childhood without a single person to support you, to make you feel loved, it's hard to change your mindset. You usually have at least one thing you can hold onto even if you are in an abusive family, and that thing helps you keep going, but he didn't have that. Yuki has managed to make friends, to establish a relationship with his brother and to set out trying new things. I'm so proud of him. He may make mistakes along the way, but he is always self-aware and he holds onto the moments of happiness to keep going. Like Haru told him, 'Yuki is weak sometimes. Yuki is also kind'. I think he is extremely strong, but his moments of weakness is what allows him to be so kind to others.

Yuki has always been my absolute favorite character from Furuba so this episode was one of my faves <3

dang.. Yuki's backstory was definitely sad... Part of me wanted Yuki and Tohru to be together (I also ship TohruxKyo) but since he views her like a mother, I guess the ship has sunken.
Feels kind of bittersweet.

Lol at Tohru's mom 🤣 But little Tohru looks so cute. I wonder why Akito became so twisted? And Yuki wanted to be friends with Kyo? But Kyo needs to beat him so he won't be isolated, right?

Okay, this episode was emotional torture. There came a point that I just cried through the whole thing. Through Yuki's eyes we got to see how the whole Sohma family operates, and God is it bad. The abuse/neglect that Yuki endured from everyone...The fact that even after going through all that, Yuki didn't become a cruel person himself. AMAZING episode, just so so painful.

ugh i'm sat here blubbering after that episode ;-;

I love the story of the cap, and it all makes sense now from the first season when Yuki fell and saw it sitting in Tooru's room. Yuki crying in his rat form really got to me too, he's just so innocent and confused. It's also really interesting that Akito looks like a child himself when Yuki first arrived at the estate, no wonder Akito turned out the way he did with his God complex.

Never thought I would say this about a ficitional character but I'm extremely proud of Yuki for growing so much and reaching the emotional maturity he needed to motherzone himself lol.
On a more serious note, the episode felt like one huge payoff for all the development he went through since the start of the show and it's been a joy to watch him come into his own step by step and slowly pulling himself out of what initially like an inescapable pit of despair. Acknowledging the nature of his feelings for Tohru and what he truly wanted from her, accepting and working towards overcoming his own weakness, trying to change himself instead of letting himself get crushed by the belief that the world and others wouldn't change for his sake, forming new bonds with new people etc. It's been an incredibly rewarding journey, perhaps the most rewarding one yet, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it leads him (even though I kinda sorta know already bc I still have some leftover memories of the manga kek).

All that being said, Tohru x Kyou was just too strong ever since the transformation scene, man. Thank god the author acknowledged that and never seemed to have any real intention of going with an awkward love triangle that would've just brought hindered the three's progression.

PS: Yeah, as others said I don't even need to mention the backstory fucked me up big time because it hits where it hurts the most. Nobunaga-san fucking nailed the voice acting too.

I find it so difficult to fully express how compelling Fruits Basket has become. The agony & hardship that Yuki & the other Zodiac members feel seems larger than life in many ways, yet also hits home in frighteningly real & relatable ways. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I'm watching anime rather than looking into a mirror that abstractly reflects what's weighed on my own heart for so many years.

More to the episode itself, it breaks me up seeing how the Zodiac members kept taking out their trauma on each other, particularly the moments where Kyo is lashing out at Yuki. Each time they hurt each other, it's because they've been suffering on their own.

a yuki centric episode diving more into his past, at the same day when he was told all of those horrible things, he came to a realisation on how it Might be true, and the first time another zodiac member talked to him they confirmed it. they, kyo, confirmed to yuki that he was hated, un cared and un needed. and it keeps happening, he tried to reach out to his mother, she didnt budge, he tried to get help from his brother, he denied it before even hearing it. he distanced himself and ended up having no friends, and in the tiny chance that he did, it way quickly taken away. but then he helped a girl, he was useful to someone, to tohru, when he found out that tohru still remembers that moment he cried. and now we can understand why he was so emotional when finding out that tohru remembered that tiny moment. he also ranted to someone about his feelings !!! holy fucking shit !!!!! good for him. that last line tho "like a mother" might crush some yukixtohru (/r) shippers but it made sense, he had no mother, comfort, loving figure and now she's here. definitely my fav ep by far

Yep, I think the dub's better than the sub. You need speakers or a soundbar for the mix though.

Still dark but in a lighthearted way and not absolutely suffocating like the sub. Honestly could barely continue with it anymore.

I'm at the point in this story where I just want to see it end. It's starting to drag out. That damn Akito. Never forgive him for throwing the horse.

Seeing him grow so much I forgot about his backstory. It was intense. We kinda saw motherzone thing coming.

When shigure was holding akito, he could've you know t w i s t e d his/her n**k(for legal reasons its a joke).

Yuki is a very strong character. he wants to be better and he needed someone to believe that could be do better and tooru did an amazing job at that.

Will we ever know why that stupid akito snapped!?

Satisfying to see everything tie in perfectly together but still sad to see its about the lonely and tragic past of Yuki. Him wishing to be friends with Kyo makes me really wish they had communicated more and gained an understanding when they were kids.

This season continues to defy all my expectations. Yuki truly is a great character and how the inner monologues are written add so much depth and emotion to these scenes. Truly a fantastic experience. The part of Yuki seeing Tohru as his mother surprised me but thinking on it I can definitely see it and it makes total sense. Great series so far.

after previous episodes claiming of yuki that rin and him have the same "crisis" it's kinda letdown, i found rin background much more devastating and cruel. yuki just being abandoned by his parents and akito abused him after he snapped out. i actually wants to find more about akito now. still good background now.
the part with yuki and tohru though was actually great.

the whole yuki seeing tohru as mom though, didn't saw that coming O_O

This was such a sad episode to watch, it just makes you want to hug little Yuki and tell him it'll be ok... and I can see why I remembered Kyo as the owner of the hat, because he originally was!! I hope he and Yuki can get along soon.

I also like how Yuki loves Tohru as a something rather platonic :)

the exploration into yuki's character and finally understanding all the rest of the short clips from his childhood, this episode is THE reason why u need to watch fruits basket and the reason why this show is so good. sure the backstory for characters can be integrated better but goddamn is this good backstory. I have never seen more fleshed out character and character dynamics in this short of an anime and sure i haven't watched many but this has exceeded my expectations. this episode is the reason why fruits basket will ALWAYS be a 10/10 anime in my mind.

Akito should die honestly...Also Yuki backstory made md cry a lot. So he saw Tohru as mother huh? Surely Tohru is that caring as a mother something her own mother has towards others too as with Arisa-chan. Yuki is cuter than I even thought. I hope he finds a way out of the dark past he faced up...
