This is the first time I actually write a review, so please forgive me if I write it in a bad way. Also, this is purely based on my opinion.
Despite reading the manga, I dropped this (for now, maybe I'll continue once it's finished airing) because so many things were wrong with this it wasn't funny anymore.
Pretty much not existing at all. The characters lose sight of their goals and every 10th / 20th episode (This includes the "old" Fairy Tail as well) they suddenly remember it. "Oh, right, we were looking for our dragon parents who vanished."
The "story" is made out of single arcs which almost always don't have some kind of connection at all. One of the most serious problems Fairy Tail has, is seriousness. Of course, comedy is nice and all but sometimes the comedy is misplaced. "Oh, we're trapped here and might die because we can't get any food - How about the girls strip and wear bikinis / sexy underwear so that the men will release us." I know Fairy Tail is infamous for its fanservice, and I am a fan of it as well, but Mashima should know when he should add fanservice and when not.
The most important part of a Shonen anime and I almost always enjoy them.
But not here. I am a tolerant watcher that can tolerate minor logic errors or slight friendship power-ups since nearly every Shonen has something like that. But Fairy Fail is overdoing it. Let me take one of the fights from this series as an example:
"I can use ancient magic, no one can beat me, I have all the magic in this LIBRARY and can even use ANCIENT / LOST magic nobody else can use. OH, I can also dissolve the magic of my opponent so that he can't use his magic anymore. I am SOOO gonna win this fight."
"I was being pwned by but thanks to my nakamas I can now counter the magic that screwed me up 2 seconds ago."
This is just not okay. In the end it all comes down to opinions here but this fight was the pinnacle of stupidity.
The characters are almost always stereotypical (Shounen) characters that can mostly be summed up with one or two words. They also don't get any major character development (If we exclude Gray and Erza, that is. (Then again, we only learned about their pasts. I doubt this can be called "character development", Mashima just seems to like these characters so he decided to give them some depth.)) which is very important in a Shonen anime. After 170 episodes Natsu is still the same idiot as in episode 1 that likes to show off. Nothing changed at all.
Outstanding / Awesome / Superb.
Easily the best part of the whole anime. The medieval soundtrack fits perfectly and is one of the best out there.
Art / Animation style:
Many people complain about it but just as many people like it. The new animation style resembles the manga and is pretty damn good in my opinion. The character designs are now much better.
I wouldn't have dropped the series if I enjoyed it, right?
Despite having enjoyed the first season, I can't bear to watch this one. I don't know what happened but it pains me to watch it.
It's probably a good Shonen anime if you didn't watch many animes yet, good thing for newcomers. If you just like me prefer animes with some depth this isn't a series for you. read more
*SPOILER FREE* (well, sorts of)
There are two reasons why I'm writing this review:
1. I have nothing better to do right now
2. I just watched the latest episode of this season.
Let me give you a little bit of my own retrospect here. Fairy Tail was the first anime I ever watched knowingly( we all watched DBZ, Beyblade and Pokemon in our childhoods thinking those were cartoons). The memory of the mixed feelings I had after watching Fairy Tail is still fresh within me. Not to mention Fairy Tail was my reason to get into anime. Even though it was unoriginal, it was enjoyable nevertheless because of it's own good merits. It made me shed some manly tears at times, cracked up a bit at Mashima's art, all in all I enjoyed it. When I heard the news of the new season of Fairy Tail coming in 2014, I was really excited. After reading some manga (only some, I didn't want to exploit my anime experience), I couldn't wait for it.....
And behold, the stinking pile of shit that they'd given us!
Let's be a bit blunt here, we all know FT has no main arc.Just a series of successive arcs with an ambition to intrigue it's fans and it successfully does so.... only sometimes tho. Arc by arc, it follows the same suite (read the top reviews of the previous seasons of FT), where Natsu will be troublemaker and he'll be the hero of the day in the end each fucking time!
Ok, has anyone played Farcry 3?? those who have, you don't have to look in to Vaas's character to get to know what Insanity is....just watch FT. Story has never been the strongest point of FT. And in this new season of FT, it has followed the same trend of going downhill just with a bit of a faster acceleration that is. The story this time involves:
1. More fanservice (remember "More is not necessarily better" here)
2. More NaLu moments (yes, Mashima really did fulfill his 12 year old fans wishes)
3. More focus on Natsu. (to the extent where you'll want to puke)
4. Other character's cast is even more neglected now. (I'm talking about the underrated Gajeel, Gray and Laxus etc)
You can pretty much guess what it is right now.
FT is filled with the typical cliche, generic characters that you'll find everywhere in shonen genre. The OP big titted girls, usually fool male characters and the attractive yet under-developed antagonists thanks to the writers obsession with his favorites (in this case, the already mentioned Natsu Dragneel). FT is full of those characters. However, in this stream of mainsteamyness, there are some particularly good characters that you'll find. Laxus piqued my interest the first time I saw him in FT. Nevertheless, the way he's ignored later in the series and especially now is just awful. Same goes for Gajeel, how he destroys the whole fucking FT guild in the first few arcs and after joining FT, the side-effects of Natsu friendship start working. Not to mention, how utterly despising it was when Gajeel was totally pushed aside in the battle of the Dragon twins. He just went from being the strong Dragon Slayer that he once was to a mere side character in no time and in this season of FT, in these 11 episodes I've watched, I've merely seen Gajeel on the screen.
FT will present you an interesting cast which is never fully utilized. Most of the characters would just help the protags to break or make the day and then disappear into the 'interesting' category to which they belonged. Albeit, there's a bit more focus on Erza this time but Hiro Mashima just doesn't know how to make a likeable character. Erza, the once powerful Titania, cheerful at times, scary at most of the times is now your typical tsundere character with no meat to her personality. Lucy's role has always been vague in this series except for causing troubles for the guild and then being saved by Natsu in the end. This time, it's pretty much the same. In fact, it's even more now. Gajeel was right when he called her " a cheerleader" and yes, she's better off as a cheerleader. I'm open to your criticism on all of this but bear with me, they're not the least bit likeable for an 18 year old boy like me.
The art has been revitalized and it's indeed for the good. The texture are more sharp portraying the dark turn this series is taking. Inconsistencies still exist but they are largely negligible. Although, the usage of the same face but different hairstyle for every female character is a noticeable flaw in this Art Design. But that is covered up by the inconsistencies most of the time so no problem here. Backgrounds are more vibrant, fights are more flashy but I still think that A-1 could invest more into the lazy production.
Long story short, the art design is one of the highlights of this season, although some may argue but it's the best thing about FT's new season for me.
First of all, do you guys really think that a celtic kinda OSt would work in FT??
I can hear everybody say NO!
The same goes for me. In my humble opinion, they should never have changed the soundtracks. Oh how I miss the theme song by Yasaharu Takanashi! sadly, it's not there anymore. Instead, there are some non-catchy, non-vibrant and non-atmospheric soundtracks replacing that EPIC theme song. Seriously, none of the soundtracks I've heard so far fits in the mood of Fairy Tail.
The soundtracks are good, but not good for FT. Like only good when heard seperately.
I know it's a bit too early to be writing a review but know that my opinion won't change regardless. I'll edit if it does, but so far there's no sign that it will. This simplistic review will stay here, just like it is.
FT is literally no more for me. Now it's officially for all those 12 year old boys and girls who enjoy romance in shonen and need a hero to fantasize.

Very high priority in both titles is loyality, trust and naming Nakama, main characters are near to each other. Very important is that, the both are just comedies.
One of non-many differences is that the OP is about pirates and FT is about mages :)
Credit to the user -Karma- for this recommendation!!
Both are shounen anime involving both comedy and action where bonds between nakama are really important.
Shounen? Check. Fantasy? Check. Action? Check. Adventure? Check. Nakama? Check. Drama? Check. Idiot protagonists? Check. Hot women? Check.
One Piece and Fairy Tail are amazing action and adventure anime based in different but spectacular fantasy worlds. Fairy Tail is about various guilds, comprising of wizards and witches, that rely on Magical Power to compete with each other and subsequently complete jobs to make a living. On the other hand, the world of One Piece revolves around pirates and marines who rely on Haki and Devil Fruits.
All in all, you'll observe similar characters in both animes, similar humor, similar back stories, and both of them will give you goosebumps during their action sequence.
both have action, extreme comedy..... And the bond of friendship is emphasized in both.... Both will make your adrenaline rush a must to try both.....
