The problem with Aqours physical CD sales is the short tails. Those indicate that casual fans are not there. So Aqours lost both hardcore Muse fans and casual fans. Those casual fans are hard to get back. They are the reason why Muse was able to get mainstream popularity while Aqours fans are mostly just otaku, LoveLivers and Sukufesu players.
I agree with this. The impressive thing with μ's, is that their CDs have had very long sales tails (μ's Best Album Best Live! collection charted for 145 consecutive weeks). Even if nothing new has happened in the franchise, they rarely had any week where one of their CDs did not make the Top 200 Singles/Top 300 Albums cut-off. This is quite different to Aqours... but maybe it's still too early to be too hard on them.
Who knows, maybe Aqours will have a huge momentum boost when the 2nd Season Anime airs like with μ's, but we have to think of things realistically. Aqours has a lot of ground to make up to even reach μ's level of success. I wish them the best of luck, but getting their first gold disc certification without live concert event ticket sales doping (as in not a mini live event ticket) should be a nice start for them:

Muse didn't peak until the movie. Angelic Angel and the final single Moment Ring were the top sellers, identical if we assume normal Oricon reporting error ranges.

I like that LoveLive music has never really been like normal idol music. I don't buy AKB48 or Idolmaster as it really doesn't appeal to me. I much prefer the music from the LoveLive franchise and have bought every disc since the start of 2012.
I wish Aqours the best. I love their music and the seiyuu. The characters are still pretty undeveloped and the story isn't great but the 3D girls are great, FirstLoveLive was awesome. I hope the SecondLive tour increases their exposure and popularity.

I've heard many complaints from all corners of the internet saying that "most" of Aquors pumps out is not real idol music. It's a more "pop," honestly Idk how to describe it since I don't even know music genre's that well, but I do know that there is a significant difference between Muse and Aquors songs. Songs such as Sky Journey and Daydream warrior don't even have a counterpart in Muse, cause they're not exactly "idol" songs. It's smart how coordinated Sunshine's team (not the idols themselves, but hata aki and other writers) is though because S1 of Sunshine, most of the songs are mostly like Muse, kinda has the idol-ish feel to it, but the more time goes by, the more they release songs like Sky Journey and Daydream Warrior. Hopefully by S2, they keep the style of those two songs, because those two songs are at number 7 and number 15 in my most listened to songs when I have been listening to Muse for a straight year before Aquors.
I meant that they barely realized that following in Muse's footsteps isn't going to get them anywhere, they barely figured that out in the last episode. That is why I think they still technically don't deserve to replace Muse because it would seem like its just a copy and paste, but Season 2 will definitely change that, but as of now people will think that Aquors is still a copy and paste depending on their actions in Season 2. And yes, their songs are hella fire.
Got me there, I was looking at Binetsu Kara Mystery release date. And I mentioned digital because I was comparing it to Digital market sales in the US. Digital is getting larger and larger here, so I was thinking it was the same for Japan. Especially since Japan is slow on the digital age, but what made me even consider digital is that there was a Gobiano whatever article that said that more and more Publishers and studios are investing towards streaming anime. So maybe I thought they're finally transitioning to a digital age, slowly... but still going..

Hmmm.. an ok sale I guess following aqours standards.
If GK can sell more than twice or thice of this then I will see that as the upper limit of Aqours subunits.. at least before the s2 arrives
27k is probably roughly around what a "normal" sub-unit should be getting around this time of Aqours, located inter-season, post First Live and so on. Please also keep in mind - the 40k figures for Printemps and Lily White are sales numbers of the Post SIP S2 and Post Movie era, respectively. The sub-units were all getting around 15-16k figures around the equivalent inter-season era for Muse. So yes, AZALEA sales are ok by Aqours standards (CYaRon isn't, though it still sells more than BanGDream's Rosaleia first week if memory serves....)
That being said, Love Live has reached a much higher degree of awareness among the anime consuming base, at least where the main unit is concerned. The question then, of course, is where the additional 27k or so consumers who bought Happy Party Train are when it comes to the sub-units. Can Season 2 win back the missing additional 40k+ consumers who bought Moment Ring, which we knew were around back at the start of Aqours? It depends on what happened to those 40k customers and what led them to go away;, and whether there are still more Anisong and J Pop fans who might be receptive to the 2.5D Idol concept to tap into.
This brings me to my second point: GK getting twice the number of sales as AZALEA, is.... quite overly-optimistic in my opinion as much as I want it to happen. That would be 54k sales, which is basically the level of Happy Party Train, Aqours third single which was released in April.
Firstly, this would be an unprecedented gap between sub-units in the Love Live franchise. Secondly, this basically means Guilty Kiss is on par with the main unit, which basically means the Love Live franchise has a potential Baby-Metal on its hands - and this is with the least boost from a recent Live, apparently (I am told, though I cannot confirm the veracity of this, so take this with a huge pinch of salt) less marketing than a normal Aqours single and no animated PV to go along with the song.
Finally, even basic view count numbers of the preview aren't probably supporting a 54k scenario. Kowareyasuki's view count numbers are now rising slowly, and less than twice the rate of Galaxy Hide and Seek around the same time a week in from preview drop The song blazed through quickly through the fandom... and I suspect didn't really successfully leave it. If Kowareyasuki went viral instead (maybe it could in the following days? I doubt it) then yes, I'd say a 40K+, 50k+ scenario becomes more plausible.
Don't get me wrong. as a Guilty Kiss fan, I want to see their second single sell twice that of Aqours sub-units. But I seriously doubt it's really going to be possible - hence my 33.6k to 36.6k estimates. Twice of CYaRon, by the way, means that Guilty Kiss would beat Aquarium, Aqours second single. Perhaps I might be too pessimistic here, but I'd be interested in hearing why.
Aquors has not proven themselves as a group that they can be worthy successors to Muse yet, season 1 ended with them barely accomplishing anything except for the fact that they should not follow in Muse's footsteps but become their own group with their own goals instead.
Aquors has also only done 1 live tour so far, while Muse did 2-5 when those two lily white albums came out.
Also I don't know how much of a difference this is, but those two lily white albums came out in 2013 and 2015, while Azalea's came out in 2016-2017. No tracker is tracking digital sales, especially in music where Digital is making billions more than physical.
I'm going to respond sentence by sentence. I think the idea that the similarity of the anime and the fact that Aqours is seen as replacements for Muse mandated by Lantis Corporate alienated a lot of Love Live fans is an interesting one. If this is true, then Aqours launching very different music, and capped on-top with a Sunshine S2 that really deviates from SIP S2 should actually be producing quite abit of a boost, instead of none at all which peaking implies. Can the anime do it? Well, Aqours hasn't actually saved their school yet, and the show ends mid tournament. We shall see, but I would say that the last few episodes of Sunshine S1 could put the S2 in an interesting place.
Secondly, I'm not sure what you mean by Aqours proving themselves as a worthy successor. Do you mean anime-wise? Because I suspect that it's actually the music that probably will probably affect things more in the inter-season period, especially where sub-units (who haven't featured in the anime yet) are concerned. And in terms of music... well AZALEA went full EDM with Innocent Bird (and it ain't anything Lily White produced to my ears); and before that, we've got interesting pieces like Thrilling One Way and Daydream Warriors where Aqours musically seems to be diverging fast from Muse. The idea that novelty in Love Live Music will be rewarded probably depends on how well Guilty Kiss punt into metal will fare.
Finally, a quick correction if you don't mind. The 3rd and 4th Muse sub-unit singles were released at the end of 2014 and end of 2015 respectively. I suspect that most people by 2014 even in Japan (I do think that those two Muse sub-units singles were sold digitally, correct me if I am mistaken) buy the singles for the purpose of collecting, much like any sales of other physical merchandise.
In any case, keep in mind this: even for a supposedly declining franchise, Aqours is consistently selling within the Oricon top 10 weekly, and if CYaRon singles were excluded, in the Top 5 weekly.

So I went ahead and checked Oricon's rankings myself, and I saw that you've swapped Spring's and Summer's places for both this week and the previous week:
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/w/2017-06-12/p/2/
(Summer is #15 at 4864 copies, Spring at 18 with 4234)
For the previous week:
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/w/2017-06-05/
(Summer was at #3, Spring at #5)
My month-long prediction of Summer selling more than Spring was right after all.

I don't think that this is their peak popularity, not by a long shot. Ever since that episode of little Honoka and Hanayo and Rin clone came out, people were still salty that Muse got replaced, and that was just MAL, where Idol fanboyism isn't that high. Now imagine Japan where they will lynch you when you disagree with their waifu.
Aquors has not proven themselves as a group that they can be worthy successors to Muse yet, season 1 ended with them barely accomplishing anything except for the fact that they should not follow in Muse's footsteps but become their own group with their own goals instead.

it can go both ways i think, aqours debuted at the peak of ll's popularity so you can say this is their peak but at the same time they replaced muse so ll fans aren't warming up to them yet so this might not be their peak
my point in my previous comment was that aquors' sales are either going to stay the same or decrease, they aren't going to become any more popular than they already are with a s2 or a movie (like muse did) especially if the developers decide to debut a new gen of ll
and i don't think digital sales has anything to do with this when you have old franchises like im@s that is selling better than ever now

those azalea numbers... aqours are just not doing as good as they should in the music sales area (them being muse's successors and all) and i don't think their sales will improve with s2 and movie because this is the peak of their popularity
Muse wasn't at their peak until s2 and the movie, I think the sunshine anime had a big sales boost after the first concert so the muse diehards are starting to come around.

Aquors has also only done 1 live tour so far, while Muse did 2-5 when those two lily white albums came out.

I prefer Summer song's more than spring. But I'm so happy to see them selling.
So which one is selling more, A3! Songs or Ensemble Stars?
a3! only have albums so far and enstars only have singles but you can see their sales here:

I'd like to put a few numbers in perspective here, in anticipation of this likely conversation.
AZALEA's second single has sold about 2.6k more copies than CYaRon's second single (24.4k). Some facts to consider in light of these numbers.
AZALEA's first single sold 1.6k more than CyaRon 1st Single (22.8k vs 24.6k)
Lily White 4th single sold 600 more copies than Printemp 4th Single (40.7k vs 40.1k)
Lily White 3rd Single sold 1.6k more copies than Printemp 3rd Single (40.1k vs 38.5k)
The earliest two sub-unit singles had even smaller differences in sales numbers between Lily White and Printemps.
In other words, the disparity between AZALEA and CYaRon is the largest yet between the second and third most popular sub-units.
Secondly, CYaRon's second single only grew by 6.8% from its first single. AZALEA's second single has grown by 9.8%. In comparison, Aqours Third single grew by 16.5% over its Second single.
Thirdly, many fans are likely to buy all three singles all at once, rather than one at a time, because of reasons such as discounts for buying all three sub-units singles in a bundle. This means that there is a debuff to AZALEA and CYaRon's first week sales, though how big this is, depends on how well Guilty Kiss does in its debut week.
Fourthly, in light of the third reason, AZALEA's second single should give us a minimum floor we can expect from Guilty Kiss Second Single. Were Guilty Kiss to grow by 9.6% from its first single (30.6k), sales should be 33.6k. In actuality, Guilty Kiss will probably grow by more than that amount. How much more? Well, the Guilty Kiss Second single preview hit 200k views in about 36 or so hours - CYaRon could not achieve this with even 19 or so days between preview drop and release day.
P.s: It is my opinion that CYaRon has performed exceptionally poorly for an Aqours sub-unit, and AZALEA sales results likely reflect the sub-unit "norm" for this generation of Love Live at this stage of Aqours life span.

Woah.. I didn't know aqours finally has their first gold disc. Pretty impressive coming from a 2 year old group.
Was this oricon sales or digital?
It is based on how many physical copies were shipped by the distributor, so digital is not included. I'm pretty sure there's a separate category for digital sales.
Reasons why Oricon sales numbers can differ from the shipped numbers:
● Oricon only publishes sales numbers within Japan, so any copies shipped and/or sold outside of Japan are still counted by the RIAJ.
● CDs do sell some copies every week, but may not be enough to make the Weekly Top 200 Singles/Top 300 Albums threshold, and are therefore not reflected in the cumulative total.
● Shipped copies does not necessarily mean all were sold to consumers, as some could still be sitting in stock, lost in transit, etc.
