Initially developed by Leaf for PC, the original Utawararemono visual novel was released more than a decade ago, in April 2002. It was ported to PS2 and published by Aquaplus in October 2006, following the 26-episode TV anime. Three OVA episodes were subsequently released between 2009 and 2010. The series was originally licensed in North America by ADV Films, and later transferred to FUNimation.

Hey guys,
I was curious if it is necessary to watch the first anime release of this series (back from 2006) or can I just start with Itsuwari no Kamen? If it isn't are their any details that I should be aware of going into this? Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Hard to say really. It's a whole different cast of main characters, but supposedly characters from the previous series do make reappearances?
Episode 3 for example, has a general making an appearance who conspicuously looks a lot like the male MC from the previous installation, but he is assumed by a different name.
Honestly, I'm leaning on to the side of you don't have to. I've played the game before but never finished the anime adaptation. The game isn't bad if you don't want to spend your time watching 20+ episodes. It's part visual novel and part tactical rpg game iirc. It doesn't hurt to have a more holistic viewing experience i guess.

Huh... The comments aren't really bolstering my desire to watch the anime when it comes out. Suppose I'll watch the first episode and decide from there. The preview was lackluster though; what was I supposed to get out of that?
THe preview is very much meant for those who played the previous game and/or seen the original show

Hmm I am watching the original anime at the Moment and love it ! But about this one here, I´ve got a Feeling that this won´t reach the awesomeness from the original Anime :/ I hope that I am wrong
That'll be based on how much content they decide to cut out from the game to the anime adaptation. 26 episodes and low budget wasn't enough to fully adapt the first game to the anime, and I'm not sure how well this one will turn out.

I personally didn't enjoy the anime too much, but then again I didn't finish it since it seemed kind of slow but then I played the game and my opinion immediately changed. Some are making pretty ignorant claims against it just because the game it was based on had adult material. Some of the most popular series today are based off of adult games. Anyways, I'm more excited for the upcoming game but an adaptation might be nice too. IMO, I would rate the game on par, or even above, Fate, among other titles.

Quality does not always equal rating and if this "sequel"(do we even know if its sequel yet?) is same in tone(I hope it is) then I don't expect it to get a higher rating either
Yes it is a sequel of the VN series

The first series used to be rated above 8 on MAL; seems audiences' tastes towards it have soured somewhat since, but personally I loved it. Something about it just felt so... organic. The story, the setting, the characters, the writing; it just worked. Every detail felt essential, there's no messing around and Hakuoro's whole character arc is fascinating to me. No anime since has made me feel quite the same way Utawarerumono does.
It has less to do with tastes souring and more with the new audience having a different taste and the whole instant-gratification culture growing inside anime community. It has been a trend for last year or so for less frantic and less action-y shows to get lower ratings. If the show does not have the "hooks" of things exploding or stuff changing really fast, the audience loses interest.
A LOT of Utawarerumono is slice of life, worldbuilding and characters interacting with each other, as well as planning going on. A lot of it is perceived by modern audience as "filler".
Quality does not always equal rating and if this "sequel"(do we even know if its sequel yet?) is same in tone(I hope it is) then I don't expect it to get a higher rating either
