the popularity of battle shounens more or less made anime mainstream, whether you agree or sulk !! a lot of times, a lot of references and edits, and discussions are on them like DBZ, BLEACH, NARUTO, ONE PIECE, etc

do you feel left out ? what do you respond with when their fans go as 'you are missing out on PEAK !! brother' ?

YES! It's like I want to, but I always just end up watching shorter anime instead. I have multiple friends telling me to "Watch Naruto! Watch Dragon Ball! Watch all 100,000 episodes of One Piece!" and I still haven't watched any of those shows yet.

I also remember having this one friend (who moved away sadly ;-; ) who was like the biggest Bleach fanatic ever. Telling me to watch that show every single day, every single class, every single minute, every single second, just every single time they could speak. And I still haven't watched that show even after like 7 years and now I feel bad :(

I have actually watched those ones so not really, but even for the ones I haven't watched like Boku no hero academia I would not really say I've ever felt like I was "missing out". Like what am I missing out on exactly? Memes? Fan theories? Idk, there's some value in those things of course but its not worth slogging through a series you don't enjoy.

If anyone tells you "you are missing out for not watching X" and X is a shounen battle anime I think you can safely ignore them. Battle shounens are some of the easiest "gateway drug anime" to get into, if you are not watching them of your own accord you don't need to make an effort to do so (there might be a few exceptions like HxH which I think transcends battle shounen but that's just my opinion). I especially don't think you need to watch shounen as a girl. I am always surprised when I hear girls are going to town watching things like naruto and DBZ. Of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying them but girls are not really the target audience for these shows, there's absolutely no point in forcing it if you are not interested in them naturally. Much the same I don't really expect sailor moon or cardcaptor sakura to appeal to me, I can appreciate them but I don't expect them to hook me in and/or for me to become a fan of them.

Okay, I'm going to be honest. Before watching One Piece and Bleach, I was kinda jealous of those who watched those two shows. But now I've already finished reading Bleach and watching the final arc, and I'm currently in love with One Piece, so yeah. Now I totally get the memes and references, and it's cool.

But I don't feel that way about Naruto, Dragon Ball, or Detective Conan. I don't really care for those shows.

I have never watched One Piece, Naruto and Dragon Ball titles thoroughly and completely.. for dragon ball, there are arc I skipped.. One Piece, I have watched few dozen episodes at best.. and not a single episode of Naruto.. that's why have not added those three two my list.. I completed Bleach about a month ago when I was finally ready to watch it.. never felt left out.. as for what their fans say, I dun pay heed to them [honestly excessive fan screaming actually acts as a deterrent towards said title for me].

One Piece is the worst, cause it's just SOOOOO fucking long. I couldn't keep up with it. But Bleach, Naruto and DBZ are GOATed.

I don't plan to spend that much from my time for an anime when I could do a lot of other things instead. Also I don't choose what to watch based on other people expectations especially when I hear the classic ''it gets good after the x episode''

The only things I feel I'm missing out on are things I would like to watch (with subtitles) but can't, i.e. where subtitled versions don't exist. I don't feel like I'm missing out on doing things I don't actually want to do.

Nah. The only one I remotely feel that way about, since people consistently praise it and its worldbuilding, is One Piece. But I've read about 250 chapters of the manga and still can't get into it. I'll probably continue sooner or later, and I'm definitely gonna watch the remake, but for now I don't care too much since I've already read a good amount of chapters. I haven't watched/read any of the other long-running shounen listed and never plan to.

Not in the sense that I feel like I'm missing out on good anime, since I've seen enough long running shonenslop to know that even the "good" ones are not very good, but maybe in the sense that I'm left out of the shared experience of having watched them.

They're not my favorite genre, but I have a soft spot for battle shonens and there are ones I have an interest for like OP and MHA. I feel the FOMO for those, but not with ones I have no interest for like Bleach and DBZ.

"do you feel left out ?"-
No. I'm just not interested in those anime, so topics relating to them are like spam (ignorable) to me. And I still can watch reviews/analyses on YT if I am interested for the sake of "universal education".

"'you are missing out on PEAK !! brother'" -
(1) I've seen enough Battle Shounens to be sure I'm not missing much in general.
(2) I can kind of translate the Battle Shounens community reviews into my own language. I've dug through a lot of reviews related to the ones I had watched to understand why they like it and I don't (so much). Only sometimes (like HunterxHunter has the best character development) I feel like I'm living in a different reality (for me, the whole plot was about idealists unable to escape their self-destructive ethics and life goals - unless after 60 episodes going round in circles, the story spawns a brother for Killua).
(3) When Chainsaw Man came out, despite the hype generated by the battle shounen community, I was still excited to see it. I watched it, I liked it - so I think I'm able to tell for myself if I'm likely to like an anime.
(4) I know that MAL's weighted score inflates the numbers for anime with high episode counts. So I'm not surprised to see HunterxHunter in the top 10. Also, anime that are released over many years will create a process of natural selection that results in only the fans being in (I also know that my beloved Monogatari series would never make the top 50 if its Xth release wasn't watched only by fans).
"I don't know everything, I only know what the internet knows." - Definitely not best girl.
"To ask is a moment's shame. Not to, lifelong." - I quoted with a posed look.

I'm actually somewhat interested in watching Fairy Tail, Naruto and Dragon Ball (and dragon ball z and whatever comes next)...
it's only a matter of when I'll actually get around to do it.
I don't see the appeal in One Piece, however... I don't think I'm going to watch all those episodes of Detective Conan either, maybe only those that are relevant for the story and skip the fillers..... but who knows when I'll do that

Nothing against shounen, though, only mildly interested. I'll probably check out One Piece when the remake drops.

I'm not into drawn out epic battle shounens with so much content, but I do feel somewhat shameful about it as many of my anime nerd friends do watch them. I wouldn't mind watching a few parts of them, but there's so many other stories that interest me much more. My lack of interest may be because of the loud presence of them all and vicariously experiencing it through other people talking about/referencing those shows. I may be missing out on "peak storytelling," but at least I can glimpse at it by gauging others' reactions while I read and watch other things I already know I like.

I could never get into DBZ. I thought the fights took too long and never really went anywhere.

I also had a sheltered childhood, so some anime like Naruto and Bleach seemed very adult to me and my mom probably wouldn't have
approved od me watching them. In hindsight, they aren't so bad.

The only mainstream anime I watched somewhat regularly were Pokémon and Yugioh.

I also tried getting into anime in my mid teens. I tried watching Soul Eater and Black Butler. I never finished the first episode of Soul Eater because I thought the seen with Blair's intro was too much, and I just kinda forgot about Black Butler after the second episode.

FMA:B was the first non-4Kids anime I watched regularly and it wasn't until I was 17 that officially got into anime.

I've never felt left out when it came to most media. I've gotten shit for not seeing things like Breaking Bad or Harry Potter. So I don't really care if people know I dropped One Piece and Gintama.

Not a long running show, but I dropped Frieren too with absolutely no regrets. People calling something "peak" has zero impact on me, because people will call anything "peak" or a "masterpiece".

@Zakatsuki_ Yeah, I think I might as well try Bleach sometime, it seems like the shortest one out of all of the "Long-Running" shows, and, well, my friend was always begging me to watch it a long time ago. So I think it's about time I put that show in my PTW now!

It's not so much that I feel like I'm missing out, more of a "I'm interested to know why this show is so talked about".

The few that I've watched I ended up enjoying them. I generally don't look for that sort of content though, so it's mostly a conversation piece to share with my friends who do watch those anime often.

If I want to be a part of the discussions, then sure, I'll watch the show or read the manga. But I don't really feel left out of anything because I have no interest in being part of said fandom.

For long-running shows, I only watch them if they pique my interest. I do however would like to finish the likes of Yugioh, Fairy Tail, Detective Conan, Pokemon, and Gundam before 2030. That's my long-term goal for the next 5 years.

I will like to add that the one case of missing out that may be legit for any fan of anime is One Piece. To avoid spoilers to probably the biggest reveal in entertainment history, I would recommend people catch up before the end of the Final Saga.

Don't let FOMO eats you up. Just watch whatever you like.

Nope. I don't feel like that. If something doesn't look interesting to me enough to make me give it a try or continue watching it for longer than several episodes, then I simply treat it as any other series I either drop or simply do not even start watching to begin with. There is no need to waste time on something requiring investing a huge amount of time that doesn't feel fun.

And I'm saying it as someone who saw multiple times one of the anime mentioned in the original post (DBZ). If someone tells me "it's too long" or "I don't think I will like it", then that's okay. No need to shovel it down said person's throat and yell words like "peak", "masterpiece", "kino", or whatever.

Speaking about DBZ, I've met relatively many people claiming to be fans of Dragon Ball who didn't even give the very original anime a try. It's unfortunate and saddening, really. Of course, that makes the whole "original Dragon Ball" experience longer by many more episodes, but it's still better, at least in my opinion, than starting watching any series from a point that's far from the very first arc of it, lol.

@ame I've been on the same page in terms of really enjoying a popular series, but as far as thinking something was peak...Steins;Gate is probably the closest. At the time, it was so far removed from what I'd usually watch, being a much slower pace with not much happening for the first few episodes. Really caught me off guard how invested I was when it started to pick up.
