off-season said: I have to admit the look of this episode had me vacillating between "ran out of money?" and "guest artist?" - on the one hand the characters often looked quite odd and even clumsy in bread-and-butter shots and the animation was often visibly limited, but on the other hand, great close-ups and stills galore. I agree with this. Some look way off, like the characters and some comedic moments. But then the hiruko fight scene had some awesome shots that made me change me mind. |

Don't want to say this is my episode of the year as there is one another anime this year (2 with copium) that might have better episodes, but in terms of sheer line up, it has to be this one and it's not even close. The light flare is kind of reduced in the opening segment and we didn't get much of the sweeping 2d backgrounds like these: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/64248 https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/175092 There are two instances where this could have been possible, once around here - https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/229510 and the other probably here - The opening and the closing shot of the episode are rear-view mirror of the car. Moi_ said: Btw how tf do people notice that the staff member changed? - By reading the credits listed when the ED plays out (if you can read Japanese) - Couple of twitter users translate the staff into English - The official website or social media accounts of the anime sometimes post staff members - The staff members of each episodes can be found listed on anime database sites like anidb, ANN etc.[although slow for a weekly anime] In terms of noticing during watching the anime, some animators, storyboarders etc. have strong idiosyncratic style, and can be easily recognized. |

What a bizarre tangent for the episode to take. Weirdly edited intro and some wild oscillations in the animation compared to the rest of the series. I also did not think the breeding camp was gonna be anything more than a joke last episode. |

Wtf? why? I didn't understand anything haha, I mean the kid is a fucking hiruko but I don't know they care about anything, is that common? The final part was very weird, I don't know how to feel about it, he killed the one who could be the traitor and he took his own son away bruh. ._. This anime could easily be compared to made in abyss in terms of the strange things it has xd |

Who would've thought that Juuichi would say the truth about him being in that facility and Kiruko and Maru tagging along in the car lol. Kiruko & Maru go out exploring an building that is called The Walled Town but its deserted. When they are searching they feel a cold air brewing and its so bad that they begin to freeze, they finally notice that its a maneater. Looks like some teammates from Juuichi found him and told that his kid is okay and in good hands, he was really happy to reunite with his kid. The same maneater attacks the group at night and Kiruko flees with the boy but couldn't go anymore so Maru takes over and puts him on the ground, apparently the kid is the maneater? luckily the kid survives. Tokio is about have the baby born but wishes that Kona is there. Kiruko and Maru try to leave with the car but the car breaks down literally 10cm ahead lmfaoo. RIP Juuichi's mom. |

The only point I tried to make is explaining to those who thought the animation "degraded a lot" in this episode that people need to know more about the staff working behind the scenes. If a certain style of directing is not working for you, that's totally okay. You keep your opinions in mind and I got mine, but people can't just randomly come and say "the animation is bad" - IT IS NOT FAIR FOR THOSE TALENTS WORKING BEHIND IT.AllennnnnnZ said: AkeZZZ said: So... what was happening with the art and animation in this episode?! btw, the location of the walled city in this episode should be somewhere around here Btw to those who thought this episode had bad animation, the staff list included some of the most talented key animators for this specific episode, like Yoshinari Kou (吉成 鋼), Araki Ryou (荒木 涼) and Takeuchi Tetsuya (竹内 哲也). It did throw me off in the first couple of minutes (especially with the comedy). That comment was for the people who unironically say that it is 'low quality' and 'ran out of budget' when it's clearly not the case and was an artistic choice created by brilliant animators.AllennnnnnZ said: AkeZZZ said: So... what was happening with the art and animation in this episode?! btw, the location of the walled city in this episode should be somewhere around here Btw to those who thought this episode had bad animation, the staff list included some of the most talented key animators for this specific episode, like Yoshinari Kou (吉成 鋼), Araki Ryou (荒木 涼) and Takeuchi Tetsuya (竹内 哲也). I'm still so mad for trigger having ruined this episode... but this history is so good and I can't help but think about the episode. I still didn't read any comments because I don't want to see people defending this atrocious animation, so excuse me if someone already pointed this. So, the hiruko, the monster, in this episode was obviously Jugo's mother. No one questions this, right? Totori isn't the only one. The kids from the Academy are living in the outside world, some had children themselves, and these children are special. The reasons why Maru can kill the monsters is because of some "power" the inherited from his mother, probably Tokio, just like Jugo's inherited from his mother, the monster in this episode. Totori probably have some "power" she isn't aware. And in episode 8 we discovered that the children from the Academy may transform into monsters after they die. Putting these two information together in this episode, I was thinking: if there was kids from the Academy, or if the "Walled City" was created by kid from the Academy, which of the kids had interest in sex and reproduction? Naturally I remembered these two: Juichi wasn't only going to flee with Jugo's mother, he was going to flee with her and other women to whom she looked very close. And look at that, one had brown and long hair, the other dark and short hair. The two were executed after the failed escape attempt, and one month later the monster appeared. That monster was born from of their corpses, right? All previous information fits together. Render_1 said: Does it really matter how "talented" they are? You are all witness of how much I praised how this series is handling the sexual elements and themes. And what these morons did in this episode? Focused on the sexual "jokes" in the most juvenile and immature way possible. How idiotic brain dead decisions like this are made? This adaptation was succeeding so much in an style and tone that it's the antithesis of everything Trigger represents! |

I've been loving this show, but this episode was clearly worse than all the others so far. The directing in this episode felt totally off. The pacing was disjointed and had me wondering if I missed something last episode. I even went back to check and realized I missed nothing. This is not a place you want your viewer in. The janky slideshow presentation flashbacks barely helped to explain anything, accompanied by overly stylized goofy reactions, groping, and some strange animation choices. This seemed to be an episode where the budget was skimped on, but more importantly, where too much content was jammed into too little time. This would have been far better as two separate episodes. What would have been very impactful scenes in this episode went by far too fast with barely any build-up. I hope this is only an exception to the rule as far as this show's pacing, something that the previous nine episodes did not struggle with. |

a few still shots, but it's obvious they cut those corners to make some of the other shots absolutely godly. idk how to feel about the "comedy" trigger goofy faces. I'm fine with one episode like that, but I wouldn't want to whole show to have it. BUT some of the other shots. god that whole first freezing sequence has to be one of the best looking scenes out of the entire year. it looked so fucking good. thanks to the visuals, and brilliant story telling, this was either my first or second favorite episode in the whole show. |

A lighter episode this week (except the ending), the art style was much different with more exaggerated cartoonish expressions. Still very enjoyable though, of course. I can understand why Juichi wanted revenge on that Boar for causing the death of Jugo's mother, why would anyone snitch with how the women were treating them? |

It is not. You saying this is one reason why Trigger animators use so many "tricks", because they impress a lot of people. There's nothing exceptional there, there's nothing that it's "technically" better than scenes from previous episodes. This episode in general has less frames and less complex animation than previously, but the tricks disguise this. But I'm not saying that this is "bad". Personally I dislike this style, but my personal tastes doesn't matter. What matters and is the reason why I complain is that this style does not fit with this series. If the direction was at least on the same level as the previous episodes I could give it a pass, but unfortunately it wasn't. Despite having such a good and consistent animation work until now never in any moment the animation tried to get above the story and character. The story being told suffered because of this, they wasted moments on juvenile visual jokes and tried to make some scenes look "cool" with changing art styles (change the art style is a big deal and you don't do this without reason, some were just masturbatory exhibitionism just to show that the animator could do it) instead of working to make the scenes clear and legible. I really didn't wanted to discuss this, should be very obvious why some people would dislike and also why it wasn't the best decision to allow these animations to do whatever the liked with the episode. edit: I'll give a little example of how the animation in this episode was not on the same level as the other episodes. You all watched the previous episodes, you all witnessed how this series can show subtle animation and convey information clearly body language, right? In the end of this episode there's an important moment, when Juuichi is explain to the guy dying why he killed him. When he was about to say who was to blame for Jugo's mother death, just before he gave his last breath, the guy smiled slightly, surprising Juuchi. Did you noticed the smile? Many may have missed, not only because the art and animation style isn't as good in convening these little and subtle character acting, but also because of the directing decision in that moment. The frame was still, and as the guy "smiled" for some crazy artistic reason the they decided to pull the frame in. Felt like the animation just stuttered, and because the frame went from Juuichi face and back to the guy face, not on the same framing as before it was pulled in, you may not have registered the change in expression, it was not clear what surprised Juuichi. It's for things like this that I complain. |

I really didn't wanted to discuss this, should be very obvious why some people would dislike and also why it wasn't the best decision to allow these animations to do whateaver the liked with the episode. the word you're looking for is "style" not "tricks" yes it is true that on a technical animation level, most of this episode wasn't the best thing ever. but style is not a trick. it's just as if not even more important that everything else. it's extremely important. I think mars red as an example looks better than most my hero academia episodes, despite the fact the budget is clearly much much smaller. but whatever. I don't even disagree with your overall point, I just think there was a good reason for every art style change. so let's go over all of them: 1. the goofy shit. this is not even a new thing, previous episode gave characters goofy faces too, just to a lesser degree. the goofier faces tonally match the tone of those scenes, and never go outside of them. it can elevate the comedic effect, and was only used in those comedic moments. 2. the ice scene. the threat of everything turning to ice, was a complete tone shift. so giving the scene a more detailed, and almost comic looking art style, can really help push that tone change even further. the thing about art style is, when you change it along side tone, it actually works perfectly. a dreamy scene shifting to a dreamy style, a serious scene getting a more serious style, a goofy scene getting a goody style. a lot of great shows do this when tone shift happens. you remember that one sketch scene in the original steins;gate when everything turns black and white? or how evangelion completely shifts art direction and even sometimes switches to live action just to create push that feeling of "everything breaking down" even further? this is the same, the rise of tension is complimented by the art style shift. 3. the last art style shift is the backstory. which for that same reason works. the colorless, stiff dreamy like visuals, gives it a more "long lost memory" feel. the art style just shift randomly. there is always something that it's elevating. that's why it works. |

No one really knows that it was Jugo freezing everyone, Kiruko and Maru only knows because with Maru's Touch he noticed that Jugo isn't a normal human. They probably kept quiet because it was better to keep quiet about it. And the kid isn't dangerous, it was just an accident because he is very young. When he grows up his powers will be useful. |

Juichi sure has had quite the tragic life and it wasn't a lie! That warped society in the school got dealt with by the ice hiruko, and Juichi's son also now has the same powers as that hiruko. Definitely parallels with the students in the school having powers. I liked the more cartoony and expressive animation style here. Gave us a lot of funny reaction shots from Kiruko and Maru. |

This episode was crazy, like most of these episode are crazy but this is just wild. The animation in the ep was amazing, like I liked all the different type of animation that there were. Also the ending was crazy, like bro killed the dude in front of his kid and his kid can like freeze stuff like what. The new kids also seem very interesting and hopefully will and more confusing lore in the next ep. |

It felt like the storyboard and the direction of this episode were made by someone different from the previous episodes, and not just by one guy, but were made by multiple artists. The visuals as well seemed as if were combined the work of different studios. Very dense rollercoster episode, like a pendulum that were swinging between chibby like comedy, and dark moments coming out of nowhere. A hodgepoge of beautifully animated scenes and simplified sketches. I should add the kid couldn't have been the same monster that attacked them at the abbandoned building, so there were clearly at least two. |
