This is like Bell and Ryu trying to find some sort of cheat system at that Colosseum. The fact that there are monsters respawning like that makes it that much more harder.

Ryu made a difficult this episode and imo, a very brave act. No wonder Bell reacted such way after all their time together. Ryu and Bell truly has grown close over the course of this show.

This was intense.
I already guessed Ryuu wanted to go for a self sacrifice her but it was also expected that Bell would not leave her behind, hopefully Ryuu learned a thing or two about him.
But they are not out of the Colosseum yet and a lot of things car still happen.
Hopefully they will be able to meet up with the others soon.

Goosebumps with that scene at the end. Awesome, just great job at adapting this part of the novel. Great everything!

Luminous Wind looks as great as I wanted it to. The OST. Bell being heroic. And Saori Hayami just blows it out of the park with her interpretation of Ryuu.

next episode. Astraea Familia

As an adventurer balancing one's ideals with what's reality is always a tricky balancing act. So the colosseum is essentially both a stage and a breeding ground for monsters huh. Of all places to end up in though. Sneaking past the sentries on the approach sure was tense. Their luck however had to run out eventually given the density of the monsters present. Destroying the bridge to save Bell even at the cost of her life really was just like Ryu. But that was what made Bell's explosive save of her that much more heartfelt. If anything Bell running away and letting others sacrifice themselves for him is something that goes against Bell's entire being. He would never be able to forgive himself if he did so.

Well, Ryu definitely learnt her tricks of the trade from her Astrea Familia back when she was a rookie, and whatever her guild comrade Lyla taught her, it was definitely for moments like these.

The Colosseum on the 37th Floor is an endless monster-spawning marathon, and not even guilds like Ais's Loki Familia are willing to touch it. But this is not the case for Ryu and Bell: they have to face it to get back to the normal route on their way out. It's things like the hide of the Skull Sheep and monster items that they'll have a chance to blend in and not attract attention, and if not for Ryu's succinct preparation, Bell would long be dead. But they would only foretell of their survival when they cross their way into the Colosseum, being very careful while staying calm amidst the collusions of the monsters. It's intense, for any wrong step, and they'll be in grave danger instantly.

It's a spectacle to have this Colosseum nest right in the Dungeon as a test, and just when Bell and Ryu could play it safe, they're being found out, and all spawned monsters come running their way to draw a path out towards the bridge. The only ideal way is to clear the path between both ends, Bell and Ryu facing towards and away, with her Luminous Wind intentionally trapping herself to save Bell. But as much as Bell laments Ryu not joining him, this is the latter's way of atoning sacrifice for her Familia and herself.

Bell, not one to leave anybody unaccounted for, comes back to rescue her in the most heroic fashion possible.

That's why we love you Bell Cranel, the Heroic Juggernaut.

Okay, so I want to clarify one thing. They tried to use Skull Sheep hide to sneak their way out, but that shouldn't be possible right? When monsters are killed, they disappear entirely, leaving only core behind, so how did they get the hide? Every Skull Sheep they have killed on screen didn't leave behind anything. Am I missing something here?

good question, maybe they drop loot that we don t see

Ryu definitely learned stuff from Gandalf there. I find it funny that she sees Bell as an hero when she was the one sacrificing herself to save him

I always assumed drops are exclusive from bosses. We have never seen any instances of normal monsters drop any loot besides the crystals.

No way Bell was gonna leave Ryu and run away, he came back for her. That's just who he is, a hero. Ryu's characterisation in this arc has been great with this episode being the peak.

Tensions were at an all time high in this episode. They did a great job of making the scene where Bell and Ryu were trying to sneak past all the monsters as eerie and creepy as possible. Things of course had to go south after everything felt like it was going too smoothly. Ryu sacrificing herself was expected given all the focus this season has had on her  character, but Bell is way too stubborn to allow that to happen. Him jumping back into the action like that may not have been the most wise decision, but that (and the final Firebolt) sure as hell made the end of this episode much more exciting.

The great dungeon opera lurches another few brilliant steps forward.

Firebolta!

Great stuff, man. Now to cue up some Wagner until next week. The only thing painful about enjoying this epic is having to wait a week for the next episode. Well, we have what, a little over an hour remaining? We have the peak of the hero arc. It's all downhill from hereon out. Heh.

I know this sounds a bit disgusting, but what if they took the hide before destroying the monster, same as the barbarian heart, he asks if it was a drop and that look tells me it wasn't...

Pure goosebumps. Bless J.C staff for this adaptation. “What do we call those that make their ideals reality” “heroes of course”

Bell has been pushed to the absolute limit here and still he’s committed to making his ideal outcome, one where he and ryuu survive a reality. It won’t be given. But he’ll take it. Top 5 mc.

Not really. When Asterius first died back in season 1 it produced a drop item, and he was no floor boss, just a very intelligent minotaur.

I guess it could just be a super rare occurrence for a regular monster to drop anything, but considering that they must have killed dozens if not hundreds of monsters to reach that point, one or few of them had to eventually drop something.

Both of Bell's secondary daggers were made of drops from normal monsters, the minotaur horn in season 1 and the unicorn horn later

If I remember correctly from what I read in the LN long ago, drops can happen from any monsters but are pretty rare. It can be anything and any part of the monster : a fang, a horn, the hide, or even the heart it seems (I didn't know for internal organs though). Never read it to this point... I really need to after this season xD

The objectives of the expedition to the 25th floor at the start of this season were to gather a certain number of drop items, and to go further than they'd gone before.
They said that they needed, amongst other drops, 10 or 15 blue crab shells, and they got 2 of those on their first encounter with those monsters. (They were the crabs that were walking wierd, forwards)
The blazerocks are a drop item from a monster in the deep floors i believe.

I will agree that it hasn't been exactly obvious visually, but it's really quite a common thing.

Personnaly, i did prefer the way it was told in the LN, but it was always gonna be a challenge to adapt this scene.
It could also be that i prefered my first method of experiencing this part, and that i enjoyed the anime somewhat less because i knew what was coming.

In any case, that was still great!

Another flashback with Ryu talking to Lyla was pretty nice and enjoyable. Lyla's reactions were cute, but I do like the solid advice she gave to the younger Ryu, which did help her quite a bit during the present, with her and Bell's tough task of safely getting through the Colosseum.

The disguise that they went in masking their scent from the monsters worked really well for a while, but sadly it wasn't going to last forever. The skeleton monster had a bone to pick with them (Not sorry for the crap pun! XD) and all hell went loose, as Bell and Ryu did their best to drive away the huge hoard of monsters going after them.

Ryu then had Bell go ahead before using her powers to push him to the other side of the bridge before blowing it up, still with the mindset that she was making a needed sacrifice and while she did hold her own against the monsters, she started to tire out. As expected, Bell went the long way around and came back to save her, unleashing the items he had along with a well-timed firebolt to unleash a satisfying looking explosion at the endless mob of enemies.

Seems like Alise's words would be correct after all, huh? The pair aren't out of danger, but hopefully this will get Ryu's mind to reconsider and agree to escape will Bell alive. A satisfying episode overall, I say. =)

Yeah... This is actually a problem of the anime adaptation.

In the LN when monsters die they don't just disappear, the corpses remain. This is actually one of the jobs of the supporters, having to loot the corpses to get the magic stones.

Yeah, I can see why would animators want to do that (less work to do), but I guess that created a problem now :D

The coliseum was intense holy. That episode felt so short for some reason, but it was so damn good.

Using the skull sheep hide and a barbarians heart scent they make it past the initial bridge with monsters and make it to the coliseum where never ending monsters spawn. In where they fight for eternity until an intruder appears. One skeleton later and it messes with their whole plan and now every monster is after them.

Ryuu makes a hard decision, sacrificing herself to make sure Bell escapes. But we should all know the anime by now. Bell is not going to leave a girl in a dungeon, he is going to pick them all up. Bell ran all the way around to another path and saves Ryuu fire balling the entire coliseum.

My most anticipated anime of the season is delivering and I'm loving every second of it.

Seeya next week!!

I really like the seemingly slower progression while still showing a lot of growth (especially in the character department) this season has been giving us, but sometimes things get a bit repetitive imo
I feel like Ryuu sacrificing herself to save Bell (or at least attempting to lol) is getting just a tad repetitive. I understand she now seems to think she has taught Bell everything and thus thinks it's ok, but because of this recurring "leave me behind and go" act it's just beginning to feel selfish instead of selfless. There is no bravery if it feels like she wants to die.

Although that is possibly on purpose and would imo be good writing but still it feels annoying xd

The tension in this episode is too much, I always knew masking your scent doesn't gonna end well.

So is the Colosseum is an actual test for what? I wonder IF its possible to end the unlimited spawn lol.

What an Heroic act from Bell, as always. Goosebumps! Ryu should trust more Bell this time, right?

Can't wait for next episode.
Why do we have to live in such a cruel world?

The dungeon pretty much having an endless horde mode is pretty cool and funny when you think about it, if only there was a mystery box with the ray gun lol. I also appreciate this entire episode being dedicated to Bell and Ryu, it really helped with the flow, and the intenseness was cranked up the entire time before and after they got found out.

Then came Ryu’s sacrifice moment, I’ve heard it makes more sense in the LN but here it seemed kinda silly that she’d stay behind when it appeared that they had the upper hand, but you can argue that Ryu was actually looking for a good place to die and be with the Astraea Familia which makes sense, but she didn’t plan for Bell to do the impossible lol, I absolutely saw it coming but it was still a great moment, once you enter Bell’s harem there’s no escape, and I stole that from a comment I saw lol.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
