I started watching Bocchi when there was only 2 eps had aired and I didn't see a lot of hype really. Now everyone is talking about it. Idk when this even blew up but it definitely blew up.

For me it's really really good anime and probably even on my top 3 anime of the year (hopefully) but I do think BTR does get overhyped imo. It does deserve a lot of hype but this much? Idk but this is just my opinion. (8.99 also seen a bit too far but no one take the number seriously and it gonna drop later anyway).

It's just the inclusivity crew etc liking social anxiety/aspergers representation and scorning based on that alone.

I wouldn’t say overwhelming (at least outside Japan). For now most shounentards still don’t care about this „cutesy cringe slice of life midfest”, but more and more people will come to check why the hell is rating that high.

I agree....it's a good show but 8.99 is way too much and they'll fall eventually....but it clears my top 5 of this year....

The storyboarding, story progression, visuals, humor, and the music were all well executed, I think it deserves the hype.

I've had this show in planning to watch list ever since it got announced, and I've been following it weekly since episode 1.

I pretty much already expected a really good show, just wasn't expecting to become this popular.

I remember I even made a tweet about it at the beginning of the year.

I don't think it's necessarily even that popular outside of Japan (only 170k members on MAL, just compare that to other big shows airing this season)
However, the rating is abnormally high. I love CGDCT and this show was one of my easiest 10/10s I've given. But even so, it is interesting to see a show of this genre being so widely accepted. CGDCT rarely gets popular to this extent so I'm just happy so many people enjoy it, regardless of whether they think its overrated or not

I thought the show was just "ok" which means I am in the minority opinion. IDK, the unwarranted popularity of this show is starting to make me feel like "old good, new bad" for the first time in my life. K-On is so, so sooo much better.

Spy x Family, Kaguya-sama, Komi-san and now Bocchi each seem to me like a step in the wrong direction. I feel kinda concerned that anime is gradually turning into something I can't vibe with any more.

I watched after gigguk recommended it in his seasonal watch list review, was not dissatisfied or disappointed one bit, I honestly think bocchi the rock rocks and honestly deserves this.
170k members isn't alot but remember this is a sol and a cgdct anime, most people don't like these genre and find it boring but with those who like those genre it really rocks to them so that high of a score is possible, it's like the kessaku bands 1st song, not everyone will like it but to those who like it will hold it dear and have a special place in their hearts.

you guys are overestimating MAL ratings too much, people dont really care about MAL ratings, especially people in japan or japanese

it wont affect whether or not Anime will get season 2, 3 and so on either. there are many Anime with low(trash) ratings on MAL still get season 2, 3 and so on anyway

After thinking about it, it's not that big of a hype. Maybe it's just mostly people who like this are just loud. (like me) I hope people forget this easily tho. We just have to wait for now.

I would agree that its popularity strikes me as odd, it’s decent but I can’t really vibe with it that well. It’s too over-the-top with manga effects, and generally exaggerates everything. The kind of visual gag humor that drives this show feels shallow to me.

In some ways, it reminds me of Kaguya-sama, which was much worse with over the top humor but in a different way with a zealous narrator.

But clearly a huge portion of the anime community likes these sorts of exaggerated humor seeing as these anime got rated a 9 on average.

I keep hearing about the series and honestly the fans started to turn unbearable once the series got suddenly popular by topping charts in stuff like Anime Trending, so I'm distanced of the series even thought I think it is up to my alley.

I see what this series is about and the little I know about it seems like a worse K-ON (sorry for the comparison if anyone is tired of hearing it) which is not a bad thing, like, K-ON is awesome, I think I will actually check out the series later in the line, I think I will end up liking it.

About the MAL rating, look, Kaguya-sama S3, which is the worse season so far, is at freaking 3rd spot of the site, don't take it seriously at any point in your life.

People liked it and rate based on it, simple as that. The anime did not have to do big advertising campaigns selling pure smoke like certain series currently on the air.

It just on Mal. But outside Mal this series is clearly huge especially in Japan.

Still I don’t give a fucc about rating in mal. But Bocchi slowly climb from 8.00 to 9.00 is really something. Especially for a show that not well-know at first

y'all are weird. why do you even care if the show has high ratings? i used to see so many people complaining that only shounen and action shows are popular, anime fans should give chance to SOL anime too.

and now that a SOL show is popular, y'all are making posts calling it overrated. i might sound biased but the show deserves its popularity. the comedy is good, characters are loveable, amazing songs and animation. What's not to like about this show?

i have seen so many anime which people consider a masterpiece but those are solid 7 for me.

Well it's #1 show on Anikore this season, so I'd say it's not only hype from the west. It's not a high budget animation, but still I'd give it 10/10 in animation because of insane level of creativity. The show embraces it's lack of budget, and instead of doing a sloppy job and hiding the errors, it turns coal into diamond. The star of the show is bocchi, and she turns this maybe 7.x show into something worthy of 8+. Everyone can relate with her because at some point in life, all of us night have felt the anxiety atleast once that she faces in her day to day life. After that it's just memes, music and goof ups, which make us laugh and stick to the screen. I think it deserves the spot in top 50 for being a breathe of fresh air and delivering something very new and unique.

Very well deserved. I nestled into the fandom since the first episode and it's been a ton of fun for the last 12 weeks. The characters are all great, the songs are great, everything about this show is fantastic. Musicians will enjoy this show even more. Loved every moment of it. 9/10 only because I don't give out 10s.

i like Bocchi quite a lot but many other anime do what it does better and what Bocchi has going for it the most are fun and engaging visuals and animation. which is great, it's a really fun anime to watch

i feel like if anything that the massive wave of positivity bocchi has gotten being a holistically decent cute girls anime in 2022 says a lot more about how starved modern "comfy anime" is of that sort of competency

i would love to see this apparent success lead to another season to develop more on its potential, there's a lot there to go further with

I felt the same about this whole popularity of Bocchi. The standard of quality anime is already going downhill in these recent years. Most newly top-rated shows are just carried by bandwagons and recency bias/hype.

This makes me want to ask why Watamote is shat on while Bocchi gets overwhelming popularity. I don't know if people's attitudes towards social anxiety has changed, but if I was like Tomoko and people made fun of me for my social anxiety while I see the same people praise and relate to Bocchi, I would feel like I've been done dirty.

It’s not overhyped. Considering the current amount of members this anime has on MAL is around 176k, I wouldn’t put it in “overhype” territory.

That being said, Bocchi the Rock is in a very curious spot when it comes to popularity. The amount of viewers pales in comparison to other Fall 2022 big hitters like CSM, Bleach, etc, but it also has a really high score, especially for a comedy/SoL series that’s adapted from a 4koma.

Based on the aforementioned observations, we can draw the conclusion that BTR hasn’t drawn in a big member count relative to other big-hitting anime, but it’s smaller fanbase is also more passionate, and vocal.

Simply put, no, it is not overhyped, it merely drew a highly passionate base of fans who really adore the anime. With that being said, I believe BTR definitely deserves its rating. Like it or not, you have to admit that it struck a chord with a good chunk of people. To them, this was an anime that they could relate to, and it felt like the team behind it understood both the band experience and the social anxiety experience.

It’s like what Ryo said to Bocchi about her lyrics. “It might not connect with everyone, but to those it does, it’ll hit deeply”.

I haven't watched this series yet. But I'm definitely gonna watch it real soon. The members of it are increasing rapidly. It left like 4-5 shows behind in just some weeks in member count.

Ik MAL ratings don't mean much, but it's not like they don't mean anything at all. BTR manga isn't really popular at all. So I'm mostly sure that there aren't really any biased fans who just rated it higher.

Mal is one of the only largest Anime community where we can see the scores of a show & all. That's why people take it srsly & start arguing, saying how does it have more ratings than this show?

People are rating it higher based on how the show is, not in comparison to other shows. If a show has higher rating than the other doesn't mean it's better than that. Bocchi has more ratings than AOT, so does that mean it's better than AOT? No.

The ratings of a show speaks for itself. Not comparison to others.

I give you the best comment award. Very well quoted. Success of Bocchi isn't only a win for the series or Cloverworks, but also the minority who enjoy such shows. It a proof that you don't need insanely high budget and popular source to be a big it. Yamaha and Marshall definitely struck gold with this.

Definitely well deserved. Even among the SoL/CGDCT/music/band genres of which there are plenty of titles out there already and many of which I've watched, Bocchi the Rock stands out above the rest as a work that took what was otherwise a commonplace and mundane topic and brought it to life with good humor, amazing art, and boundless creativity. In short, this show has a soul, and we desperately need more anime with this much passion put into it.
