Weirdly, its the Cat's Eye characters who look more unusual in this artstyle, despite having more rigid designs that'd presumably suit the environment more. Still, no issues going into it.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

So now Lupin is in the same universe as cats and Ryu Saeba? Or does this collaboration imply nothing?

Considering that different Lupin entries are arguably set in different universes, it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

But can't we then say that a certain version of Lupin is canon in this universe? Or is it just a Scooby Doo and John Cena collaboration level?

I would say that the Scooby Doo analogy is a good one. I would even describe the more famous Lupin vs Conan movies that way. TMS Entertainment produced both, so they decided to have a collaboration movie to bring more fans to both. It's like how Warner Brothers made crossovers with Scooby Doo and Batman. Are they actually set in the same universe, probably not, but that doesn't mean you can't put them in a movie together if you own the rights to both.

So, most likely it's just a combination of things, the rights to which have one copyright holder?

That's what I would imagine. While shared universes can be tricky to define sometimes, Monkey Punch never made a Lupin comic with Conan and Gosho Aoyama never made a Conan chapter that talks about Lupin and his gang (as far as I am aware). If that happened, then there would be a better case to say that there is a shared universe, but when it's just the anime right's holders making a couple of crossover movies, then it's a different story. I guess you can say they share a universe in those specific movies, but those movies don't relate to the universes of the actual Lupin series and actual Conan series.

I see, thanks for the clarification. I like the universes of these anime other than Lupin (not because I don't like it, but because I only watched one Lupin show to make an opinion) and I wouldn't mind if they had a common universe.
