I feel like with time this word has lost all its original meaning. Whether jokingly or solemnly, waifu used to be a special character someone had romantic or even sexual feelings towards, but nowadays it's overwhelmingly used as a synonym to a "female character I like" and in most cases without any emotional attachment to it. To put it in another way, when in older times people used to have the waifu - one and only, today it can be used in a questions such as "who is your waifu from winter 2022?".

So what do you think this word means or should mean?

I think you should get yourself sorted out if you have that kind of feelings towards a non living lump of pixels.

I think waifu is just a joke. I cannot have any true feelings towards an animated character.

a female character that you feel attached to a lot and would probably stay that way for as long as your mind allows.

Take religious figures for example. Many of them are fictitious, but they are still objects of worship for great number of people. It's especially true for paganism, where deities are pretty much the same as characters in other fiction.

I guess an anime girl that you'd choose to be your significant other if you'd have to pick?
Or someone you'd be attracted to.

Idk, like Revy is my waifu

It's just all good fun in the end though.

According to urban dictionary "Waifu" is used to refer to a fictional girl or woman (usually in Anime, Manga, or video-games) that you have sexual attraction to, and you would even marry.

To me it's just your favorite character from a particular show you like, or from a particular anime season. For example, I'd say that idk, Riza from FMA is my waifu, which means that she's just a character that I like from the show.
If you were given the option of dying painlessly in peace at 45, but with a lover at your side after a full and happy life, is this something that would interest you? Would this interest you at all?

it's a literal non living female drawing (usually underage for some reason) to whom men in their twenties or even thirties have sexual attraction. that's just how dumb this concept is.

Good point. You could say the same thing about loving celebrities as well I guess. A good number of people probably do stuff like this on some level at least and it's not like I am immune either. I just don't think that it is productive or useful in any way to love something that is outside your reach. Love needs a lot of work and IMO it is pointless to spend all that work into something that will give you nothing in return. But if that is how you want to live or you think you get back enough to make you truly happy I am no one to stop you from making that decision.

Isn't having sexual/romantic feelings in correlation with "liking" that person/character.

Having romantic feelings towards an anime character is alright to some extent
After that, you are just a fictosexual.

Everything is correct i guess and it's depend each other perspective.

1. A character that has a special place in someone's heart = nijikon/2d complex
2. A character that has a special place in someone's heart = just fall in love with a character but not ignoring 3d.
3. Pretty anime girl = favorite a character for long duration.
4. Pretty anime girl = favorite a character in a certain anime in a certain duration.
5. Joke = "Dude, she is my waifu don't touch her hahaha..."; "she was my waifu!".

This idea can be expanded further by adding to it things such as patriotism, being a part of certain ideology, being a follower of certain philosophy, etc.. We humans attribute a lot of value to things that logically have none, so one might say that nothing in world has meaning, and yet, depending on the person - everything does.

Personally, I believe that if something brings happiness to one's life without harming others, it's a good thing and there's nothing shameful about it. So by extension, having a waifu is healthier for society at large than being a part of some ideology that theoretically can lead to ruin.

Any anime girl that you like can be your Waifu. Having an unhealthy obsession with a single character means you need to touch grass.

You're right, I guess my selection of words isn't the best. To compare with real life, however, a "girl you like" might be someone you saw while going for a walk, but a waifu is soulmate of sorts.

I think waifu is like a "crush" but on a fictional character. It can be either due to sexual or romantic feelings.
It keeps changing just like crushes in real life as you age.

Though the term 'waifu' is definitely misinterpreted with 'best girl' among the community.

If you're close to them for all these years I wouldn't say its long. But if you're meeting your crush after 20 years and still have the same feelings you had back then. Well, it is a little *ahem* a different case.

It can be both. It's all up to interpretation.

To some it means Favorite Character

To other's, it means the character is special in some way.

And to another group, they genuinely love them in a romantic way.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I think it's open to interpretation based on the individual, but basically favourite female characters with slight romantic feelings for is what it is for me. No way I'd marry them though as my two are horrible women.

You could argue by explaining how they are different instead.

Both are created by human mind.
From a scientific point of view, both exist in imagination only.
Both evoke certain emotions in their followers and might influence the lifestyle in some manner.

Add to this historical figures. To those who live today someone like Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar might as well be just another fictional character, but people still take inspiration from them.

The only difference between these examples is their pedigree and real life influence.
