My favorite episode so far, but it seems like I’ve been saying that every week when A1 puts out a new episode. This anime is that good.

Annette went off in this episode trying to put Lena in her place. The little hints about her former friends next door were pretty well laid out. I wonder how many people will put the puzzle together regarding Annette after that scene.

God, the Republic is vile. Killing off the 86 so that no one will remember them anymore in order for the Republic to remain a peaceful “utopia.” That’s just awful. Of course, Lena recognizes that, but her uncle also tries to put her in her place. This scene did a great job answering some questions I had about how A1 was going to present the Republic’s true intentions of killing off the 86. Well done with that scene.

Man. That last para-Raid conversation with Lena and Shin was sad. Lena telling Shin to run away, only for Shin to say he can finally be free fighting his brother. That’s heartbreaking for Lena, and for viewers too. However, Shin’s last words to Lena were promising: “Survive until then.” That had me jump out my chair when it happened. I LOVED that moment.

The second half of the episode was the calm before the storm. Seeing the last members of Spearhead go about their day before heading off to potential deaths was a mix of so many emotions. Seeing the room that was filled with life, only for Shin to be the only left in the room was very symbolic of Shin’s life itself.

And now they’re off. Shin, along with Theo, Raiden, Kurena, and Anju, carrying the burden of hundreds of their fallen comrades, make their way to Shin’s brother, who was confirmed to be the big bad Shepherd that we saw in last week’s episode.

Wow. Once again, I’m just blown away by this anime and everything it’s doing. Simply incredible. I am so hyped for this showdown!

Now it showed the beginning of the dehumanization of the 86, first they were taken out of schools, and then it only worsens to their current situation, their scene on the last day before the suicide mission was very sad

I’m very anxious for the next episodes, they support the shin brother’s part well, and with lena finally realizing that she won’t get help for the 86s (legally at least, since the system itself was made to kill the 86) she'll have to do something if she wants to help them, even if it's just a little

The “beat on Lena” train continues with her losing her only friend, her Uncle, and contact with the Spearhead unit, all while being helpless to do anything. All of the characters are great in this series. The narrative pace is fast and/or choppy at times, but everything else is great. Looking forward to the next battle too.

The delivery of Annete's speech was quite cringe, but the importance of it outweighs the former.

I have no doubt in the speculation of the two 86 brothers Annete was talking about being Shin and her brother. I look forward to seeing the full picture on Shin's past.

Naturally, that also entails that I look forward to seeing more of his brother. From what we've seen from that post-credit scene, it seems he has quite the serious saviour complex - along with a few more loose screws (possibly literally too, considering he's a mech now).

Well, this episode was very revealling. 86 soldiers are being thrown into a suicidal mission, and after knowing what Lena's uncle said about it makes things even darker. But at least the guys are confident, so I hope everything gets right. It seems the twist about the '86 student' will be even more surprising, and make things more close between Magnolia and the soldiers.

One more thing, the opening is just great. I never get tired of listening to it.

Oh well, "You're just saying that to justify your despair", stop Lena, that's what you're doing aswell, he is right, that's not the way to persuade anyone that knows the truth.

Those pigs wouldn't know what humanity means even if it was welded to their brain - similar words to what a wise big juicy person used to say.
I still don't completely understand what powers do both of the brothers have ? Or is it the power that Shin has atm, that makes him hear all the voices of the dead people inside Legion machines? And why did his brother blame Shin? There's no way that he became that crazy and out of the blue blamed his little inoffesinve brother that he swore to protect for the deaths of their parents, right?
The Alba person seemed to care about Shin, but I can't quite say if I saw him already or not. Maybe not. But I'm curious of what their relationship was.

Rose went full crazy mode on Lena, which kinda shows that the girl has a few screws loose, but she isn't wrong and has all the reasons to react that way, I just found it kinda mean for her to explain everything to Lena in that way and say that they are both guilty, like girl, if you knew the truth, why did you let your kind friend experience everything for herself instead of you actually giving info... Lena could've done things different if she knew everything beforehand. But I guess that she did save her in a way, from probably becoming a more potential threat to the army.

I want to see what happens with all 5 of them and what Lena will do next so I'm really looking forward to the next episode :)

I don't really know what to say.
There's so much to unpack in this episode that I think I might just need to rewatch it a couple of times just to sort it all out.

In the myriad of amazing scenes here I will say that my favourite was the end. There was no grand revelation about Shin's "sin", it was simple frustration and poor timing that caused Rei to do something he regretted for the rest of his life. That was so human, it hurts.

Maybe this will be clarified in the next episode, but does the ending indicate that Shin's brother is aware that he is part of the Legion?
From what I understood, Legion only copies minds (so the mind itself becomes hardware), and the side effect of this create a "ghost" that has only the last memory / thought or accidental memories, and if the brain itself is fresh enough also some experience and knowledge (which become part of software) but this situation with his brother suggested that practically everything was saved (or the proverbial 90%) and maybe he went crazy, but he still makes conscious decisions independent of the Legion.

lol what if there is a intact brother's head or brain in the machine?

Wait, Shin lived next to Anna as a kid?
So if he survives, maybe he'll end up with Anna and not Lena? It would be an interesting twist and her past explains why she has problems finding a partner, she simply disgusts herself and her people and I would not be surprised that if Legion would fell as the government predicts it then, not being needed, she simply would committed suicide like her father.

Why did my boi Joro (Haruto) had to die off screen like that….
Intense episode, sweet Jesus Henrietta went and snapped at Lena hard, and her uncle on her too, really loving their characters, their arguments and ideals hit so hard.
Lena is like a damn child thrown into the real world this episode (I mean this has been happening for like since early on but this ep really stomped on her)
Post credit went ham too… so the big bad last ep post credit was Shin’s big bro huh.. and it appears Shin was… well yknow.
I am both excited and scared for the next ep… wtf does “goodbye” mean… they aint gonna die right? They the mc… they must have some sort of plot armor right… I need all the plot armor they can get, I wont even give a shit if Kira and his Freedom Gundam randomly beam spams every legion and one shots the shepard.

WTF A-1 Pictures, JUST WTF!!!!!

An absolutely amazing episode. I'm in awe at the direction, animation and sound of this episode. It keeps getting better and better.

I loved the first half of the episode and Annette's breakdown. I felt like she was never honest with Lena or even with herself. It's sad how she's basically punishing herself because she can't forget nor forgive herself for what she's done to her childhood friend. But to think she could've saved Shin not only once, but TWICE.. to think they were friends in the first place.. If she ever finds out about the identity of Understaker, she'll probably break.. I think this kind of shows that the Republic's doing is not only affecting 86, but also its own citizens. What a disgusting country. I blame many of the citizens for staying silent and simply accepting the atrocities their country is committing towards the 86.

I wonder if Lena will call them one last time. I personally have hope that they survive, or at least some of them (No spoilers please).

One last thing, the studio is doing a commendable job. Adapting a LN is different from adapting a manga, so props to them for this phenomenal translation from one medium to another.

San Magnolia sure is a small place, huh? Wonder what Annette would say if she knew the friend she hates so much is the one trying to save the boy she let die.

Well... the Republic is rotten; Annette proved to be a quite awful person who hates others for having the resolution her pathetic self lacks and in a nation filled with ignorants and corrupt leaders, Lena is pretty much alone in her endeavor. So yeah, I have no idea how this story will continue now that it seems the whole Squadron will be obliterated next week. Well... all of them except for Shinei, of course, given that he now has "superpowers" like his psychotic mecha bro.

This episode is truly something differ. More info dump revealed to building up the hype for the next, possibly, full duration battle.

Annete story and the reason of why she acted so mad rejecting all of Lena's innocent and pure ideology. What a straight mess. Interesting that its also contained a good revelation about her childhood eighty-six friend. That's him, i am pretty sure. The power, their situations, god must be damn.

The order can't be rejected. The uncle, in fact, even told Lena all of the irony behind the republic moves to banished the eighty-six. Its inevitable. But, Shin last statement to Lena mostly intriguing. What lies beyond the eastern areas? Lena shall be going to those post already and thats why she couldn't give them the last monitoring, i assume.

Spearhead squadron, and to think before that they already eliminated all of the units, except those five. Unbeliavable. That's the loyalty, always following orders and their reaper captain, until the last day. Good luck, all of you.

Shin's brother pov, and, ah, thats the answer of my previous question. How twisted his mind there, moreover after he got those metal Legion body. But i can't blame the shit out of him. So, well. The battle of their end positively be fascinating, can't wait for the next week....

I liked how we finally got an explanation for the motivations of our other Alba supporting characters. However I feel like it was kinda rushed and we didn't really get time to dwell on the implications of what they were saying. They just kinda said their part and screwed off.

In fact that's kinda how I feel about this whole show. It doesn't really feel like it has a soul. It's just ticking boxes from the LN. Maybe it's the way I've been watching it. Maybe the story just doesn't translate well to an episodic TV show. Maybe it should have been released in its entirety on streaming like with NETFLIX anime? Who knows?

Perhaps I'll have to rewatch it when it's fully released because this show has been such an enigma to me.

another strong episode. all the republic rotten-ness been laid out. Lena's uncle acknowledge it, despise it, but still dont want to do anything about it since its clear he's also just a cog in a big machine that is a nation. and Lena only place to dump her frustation in the form of best friend turns out.. hated her behaviour.
Lena truly becomes alone in that false utopia now.

If you see make a comment an episode randomly, it means the episode could've been more emotional impactful to me.

As always we get loads of exposition dump and while it's a good thing that heavy dialogue exists to fulfil the seriousness of a grim realistic topic, the visuals happening between one saying the exposition dump are vital in intensifying an emotional impact.

Episode 5's exposition dump was conveyed well so I was expecting the same in here, but unfortunately, that's where it falls apart.

Though we get to listen to Annette's voice conveying her bottled-up jaded emotions into an emotional breakdown and saying her hatred to Lena face-to-face (it's scary déjà vu this scene is a reminiscent of a certain AoT final season scene), I wished there were flashbacks of Annette's father's suicide being disguised as "dying during experiment". Going back and forth would've intensified Annette's jaded emotions that's scaring Lena, who's mostly at fault for not noticing her best friend making jaded looks while discussing about her Handler's tasks.

Given she had close-up, conversations with Annette, it's hard to hate Annette; though that doesn't mean Lena is meant to be hated because her naivety about saving the 86 didn't fade out eventually but Lena could've think & wonder why her best friend is talking opening skulls like it's a fun thing to do. In the end, Lena should've noticed Annette's emotional breakdown being bottled-up like everything is fine if you ignore that the 86 didn't exist from the beginning.

One will feel pity for Annette's inability to defy the toxic of racism being spread like wildfire; after all she was an innocent young child who's constantly get rebuked by white supremacist kids of her age back then. Would've like to see more flashbacks of from stills of her father's suicide but I guess it was either too intense for airing on TV or there was limited time for an anime episode.

I also would've preferred very close-up scenes of Lena & her uncle's intense & hopeless conversation about the Republic's higher-ups believing their ultranationalism is an honourable thing to do, but that's a disgusting act in Lena's eyes. Close up shots of their faces going back and forth at a millisecond rate would've nailed the emotional impact on me, but so far, it's good enough that the jaded feelings of her uncle are being conveyed when it was revealed St Magnolia was executed like Joan of Arc after everything she did to save her country.

However, the visual direction could've match with some close-ups of the mouth and eyes (Lena and her uncle) instead of the whole face and intense flashbacks of Annette's father's emotional breakdown going back and forth at a very fast pace, with close-ups of her eyes and mouth and finally her whole face.

"The back-to-back shouty rants about the hopelessness of everything with a visual direction that doesn't match the quality of the rest of the show were kind of disappointing." - Callum May, ANN

Finally, I was shocked to see Haruto being killed off-screen, but then again, like the time limit for one anime episode, I've heard the LN source has skimmed over Daiya & Recca's deaths so I'm guessing it's am inevitable but understandable decision the anime staff had to make; though him being placed in the OP sequence like his death is gonna be shown on-screen but it didn't feels out of place to me.

Despite Haruto's off-screen death is hinting blind viewers to go purchase the LN first volume, it's a worthy anime adaptation for most of its anime original scenes have definitely conveyed the emotional impact towards viewers on the Republic's unending racism towards the 86.

For now, based on a key visual featuring the remaining 86 people, I had a feeling they'll survive. The question is how they do it once they faced the Big Brother given his POV is conveyed well with his well-meaning personality being twisted that lead him to become a Walking Killing Machine. Brace for depressing emotional impact, I tell you...

Damn, that post-credits scene! So Shin is Annette's childhood friend huh... we also now know that he already had telepathic powers even before he was left on the brink of death and that his powers were what gave birth to the Para-Raid.

Speaking of Annette, damn, she finally snapped and took it out on Lena. She clearly went overboard but you can see that the one she really hates is herself.

Between this, her confrontation with her uncle and the last talk with Shin yeah... episode of pure suffering for Lena.

Watching the last 5 survivors get ready to go on their last mission was so sad, I'm not ready for the next episode :'(

Btw, ho was the alba who was in the classroom where Lena gave the reality talk to the new recruits? He seemed important enough just to disappear and never be seen again.

I think this is the issue.
Because you have read the LN, you are obsessed with it accurately portraying the events as close as possible to the LN in every way. I see people complain here even when a single dramatic beat *didn't hit as hard* or something like that. From the perspective of a non LN reader, it just doesn't feel natural or organic. It just feels like a series of events being ticked off. A good adaptation looks at the big picture and decides what has to be cut out for the story to adapt well to anime form. I have never heard of a LN being adapted so accurately blow-by-blow before (but that may just be inexperience)

The reason why binging it all in one go would be able to determine whether I personally find this to be true is because it would allow me to experience the entire story at the pace I want it to. I will have immediate memory of all references and previous events to give better and clearer context not just to the story, but also the tone and pacing.

AoT had a pretty average first season. It mostly used spectacle and hype to carry the story.

What I'm saying is that these explanations were not given time to sink in. The general rule is one flashback per episode, and then you frame the episode's story structure and themes behind that flashback. But this time we got two, and the episode was really only a preparation episode to build hype for the finale. It felt rushed.

It makes sense. Fantastic episode overall. Insert song also banger.
Shin's brother reminds me of Ryner Lute (alpha stigma mode) from DenYuuDen.

Their reactions are mostly in line with whenever they talked to Lena since episode 4 though

Yeah, I think I might just drop this anime soon. I was heavily debating it, but this episode... wow... This anime is trying so hard to be deep, it isn't even funny anymore.

At least I gave it a fair chance by dedicating some of my valuable time to watching this ... mess. It's funny because initially they market their Waifu so hard, and now they want to treat her like a serious individual.

Sorry light novel readers. I don't know how less trash the books are but the anime did not live up to my low expectations.

Wow try hard really, I guess you didn't watch news nowadays or even read some history books. Also, it is called MARKETING for purpose, do you think audience will be hooked if the theme is depressing

Tldr: garbage: watch only for the art but turn off your brain

Mann this show is garbage. The alba government is just plain racist/stupid for the sake of the edgy "plot". What would happen to their country if they lose all 86 which is their literal defense army. The antagonist(alba gov) is just plain evil for the sake of the "plot". Atleast make a better reason for being evil smh. Had high expectations cause this is a "popular" LN but got dissapointed instead. Only good thing is the artstyle

Id rather watch darman on yt that this garbage show since both antagonist have the same stupid mental capacity but darman videos are way shorter lmao

Man the director is simply amazing. Impeccable direction.
I don't understand how one of the top reviews shit on the direction, which is legit the best thing

Let them be, some people just love to besmirch every anime in existence for some reason. (: This show is so so good!
