put it shortly, many people do not understand the implications of this film. it's a history of industrial Japan. it's deeper than you think. and the artist might not have another one of his match in a long time after he leaves.

If it isn't clear by now, Margaret Thatcher will help:

This movie is perfect, it is appreciated and beloved by both critics and audiences and I honestly don't know how can anyone not enjoy and feel wondered by it.

Spirited Away won an Oscar, the 2nd Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category, and the only Japanese film to ever do so, I wouldn't say it's overrated, but rather not seen as the film it should be seen as. Most people tend to mention, that the film won awards, but very few take the story into account, and we discuss the extra things. Spirited Away is not overrated, it's underrated.

I definitely have a stable of Ghibli titles I appreciate, with Spirited Away ranked highly among them. But I would say that my love of the studio's titles isn't universal, there are plenty of titles of theirs that are of little interest to me. I would definitely say Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro are some of my personal favourites from the studio.

Yes A tad. Most people tend to jump on the Ghibli/ Miyazaki band wagon just because its like the "in thing" for anime. And to a certain point, they are correct in that much of what the studio has made is a perfect introduction to anime for the young and those of cultures that simply know nothing about anime at all. It just seems like a lot of the films made were too similar, and even though a lot of them have great female protagonists, after Princess MOnonoke, they all just seemed like lesser, poor substitutes. I have seen Spirited away at least twice, but I just am not into it, giving it just a solid 6/10.

I've just finish it, and yeah it's overated. The story/world itself is barely explained on the movie, leaving a felling that the story is just random things happening. Sure, all that is happening clearly have a meaning, but the movie thinks it's better not explaining anything for the audience (maybe an attempt of being more artistic). Personally, I think a story carried about barely explained symbolisms is basically empty. It does have a great animation, a lot of creative stuff happening, good characters (Chihiro have a great character development throughout the movie) and a really beautiful soundtrack. Because of all those things, I consider as a good movie, and I rate it a 7/10. But it definitely should try to explain what was happening in order to be enjoyable in terms of storytelling

____ is overrated.

Is it really necessary to ask if every popular series is overrated or not? If you don’t like it, then so be it; if you like it, then good for you. People really like pissing on popular shows.

Also, no, anything by Miyazaki is not overrated.

If the plot is what make the score so high, then yes it's overrated.

Artwise it's great.

You need to analyse the movie more deeply to understand why it isn't overrated.
It's not just a children's movie. It has hidden metaphors which are not that easy to decipher.
Making a movie on a sensitive issue through childhood playfulness is no joke.

I thought so about all Ghibli movies just because everyone was into them for a period of time that they sgarted getting hate just because people like it. I watched it not too long ago and it wasn't great but the more i was getting into the action and the characters, the more I started loving it. I always loved Japan culture, especially the same aspects of its folcorw that are shown in spirited away, i liked the art style, i liked the story and soon enough we will be able to say that it s underrated because most of the people hating on it have the same beliefs as some of the ones who love it: me iz so cool if i hate it because i must be like the rest and so on

I mean I want to say my opinion just my opinion let all of us get this straight from me that this movie is overrated.
I don't get it why it's so much famous I mean just look at the characters, ok just leave the characters fact the story is pretty much common . I have already watched this type of storyline. I am not telling this movie is trash but this movie is soso in my opinion.....
And yeah it's story is common and it is overrated.

It is directed at children first and foremost.
As an Adult, you personally would not be impacted by this film, but totally different when you think about its impact on a child. So let us think about the film critically to appreciate it.

A young child named Chihiro wanders away into a spirit world that mirrors reality. Her parents turn into nasty, disgusting pigs prepared for slaughter. Despite the fact that Chihiro got into an argument with her parents and at the time hated them, she could not bear to see them die. Most children would feel the same way and this film puts that into perspective for them. Now as for the other spirits, they represent other people in the world.

Essentially, Chihiro lives her whole life span in this mirror world. She plays with a guy (childhood friend), meets a random blacksmith (apprenticeship), works at the bathhouse (works her way up) until she meets some old hag (meets the boss), gets in trouble and a dragon comes to help her (meets her childhood friend again except they've grown up to be as extravagant as a dragon), then saves her parents and goes back to reality (basically she dies and reincarnates).

During the time Chihiro is working, she also comes into contact with many spirits who are like friends that come and go, love interests, and No-Face who represents Chihiro's own child. No-face wants to gain Chihiro's approval while she's strict on it and everyone dotes it, eventually, No-face lashes out at Chihiro and eventually calms down just like a child tantrum, and No-face also learns and takes on personalities from people it eats. If No-face wanted to eat Chihiro, then it'd represent a child wanting to grow up to be like their parent.

The effect this would have for a kid is a game-changer, even if temporary. The whole film is essentially a lesson for children who misbehave. "Hate your parents and you won't have a fun life". Again, it is a children's movie. The impact it had on me as a kid is 10/10, if I were to watch it for the first time every as an adult, I'd rate it 5/10.

I dunno. I think for most people the nostalgia hits really hard which is one of the main driving forces for its popularity now. The film is great but the main part for me was how magical it felt. As an eight year old kid, I didn’t understand a lick of Japanese and I couldn’t read Chinese script but my sister would always watch it with Chinese subtitles. Which means I had no idea what was going on, however I still loved it because the way the characters were presented allowed me to imagine I was there myself and I’d have dreams about it for many nights afterwards. So no I don’t think it’s overrated,
