| I dont think MAL declined in popularity. Imo the Alexa rank can be explained in several ways: - MAL performance sucks since several months now, with occasional "site cannot be reached" error pages. Also MAL was down few times already this year. I mean for a site as big as this, it sure has some issues. This can decrease popularity - Increase of popularity of other anime sites (partly because of point above) - Increase in popularity of other websites, due to covid19 stay at home and increased internet usage. I mean MAL targets very specific audience. The regular folks wont visit MAL out of boredom. In times like these other sites gain more popularity, while anime fandom stays somewhat the same (just my rough assumption) - Discord/Reddit exist I don't know how accurate Alexa is, but if this is true, for me it is not a big surprise. MAL is unstable since like more than a year. Also its design is stuck in past century. |

| More people are probably using this site than before because of quarantine. The reason why the rank is lower than before is even more people are using other sites. Think about it. The number of anime fans compared to the amount of online shoppers, news readers, people who stream movies and shows, people who are actually gonna watch anime and not spend their time on this site that much. Also, not all anime watchers know about MAL. I learned about this site from a YouTube video. Before when I used to run into this site I thought it was a place to buy manga and give information on anime. |

| It's weird because more users are online during this lockdown compared to usual by a few thousand. It doesn't seem like other sites are getting that much more popular as well. Personally I don't think MAL is becoming less popular than it used to be. Actually if you used Google Trends (Worldwide), MAL is getting searched more and more. I don't want to doubt Alexa or anything, neither do I know how does its algorithm works but yea. |

Honestly if I have this free time I just feel like I should just go watch more anime instead of bothering to see how people reacted to it or talking about the industry in general. As for MAL as people pointed out more competition honestly if it wasn't for a few friends on here I might have switched to anilist when MAL went down. I might still who knows. There are things I like about both sites. |
