I think I just accidentally found a YouTuber just reading off of MyAnimeList and passing user reviews as their own... This YouTuber will usually read the MAL database synopsis of an anime that they're reviewing and go on reading a MAL user's review (or two) almost completely with a few wording changes. Okay, for context since there might be some people saying that I'm going after some random person for no reason: ----- It's no secret to many on the MAL forums that I'm a big fan of Uta Kata. I have recommended this anime a lot to users on the Anime & Manga Recommendation forums, to the point where some people expected me to mention the anime somewhere at some point (lol). I feel so passionate for it that I was tempted to make a MAL review for it, but I already felt like one review in particular summed up my feelings for it exactly... so I'm tempted to make a YouTube video about it instead. But before I did that, I wanted to see if there were any reviews about Uta Kata already on YouTube. As far as I know, the only video talking about it somewhat in analysis is this video comparing to Madoka Magica, but that one was simply a YouTuber's comparison of the two anime as well as their thoughts on why Uta Kata failed to be popular unlike Madoka Magica, and wasn't more like a proper, individual review. Many of the other popular videos that come up when you search Uta Kata up on YouTube are just AMVs, so I decided to look deeper by using the "Sort by upload date" option. After scrolling through a ton of Naruto videos, I ended up finding one review—a video by the YouTuber I've mentioned. I was excited to see a video reviewing it more in-depth..... but, as I continued to watch it, I recognized way too familiar words, and I don't just mean in the description... ----- Here is this YouTuber's Uta Kata review in question: To summarize the video, the YouTuber reads off of MAL Rewrite's synopsis of Uta Kata, states stuff like the air date and genres, and then literally reads off of two MAL reviews (I'll put samples of both the video and both reviews below). Specifically Archaeon's review... Video, 2019 (1:53-2:48): "Overall, if you're not really a fan of mahou shoujo genre of anime, however I will freely admit that there are some hidden gems in the genre that will mainly aim towards a teenage girl audience. Generally the mahou shoujo has several fallings in terms of story and character development that are more--more mature anime fans find unappealing. And I think it comes to the hype of many modern shoujo animes prior to it cuz it has know a lot of [unintelligible sorry] development with this typical genre as a whole. This show takes a following lead from it and besides the whole character development it could use a bit of touching up and it could be seen as a carbon copy of Sailor Moon but totally different. Thankfully the trend is gradually changing as more moderate anime of this type of magical girl has seemed to become into [unintelligible] speaking like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers S which is more mature. . . ." --- Archaeon, 2008: "I'm not really a fan of the Mahou Shoujo genre of anime (and I've watched enough of the type to know this), however I will freely admit that there are some hidden gems in in a genre that is mainly aimed at teenage girls. Generally the mahou shoujo genre has severe failings in terms of story and character development that more mature anime fans find unappealing. I blame Sailor Moon for this as, even though it enjoyed huge success, it could be thought of as being too successful in that many of the mahou shoujo type shows that followed took their lead from it. This meant shortcomings in character development, story, etc (Tokyo Mew Mew springs to mind as a prime example - it's almost a carbon copy of Sailor Moon). Thankfully, that trend is gradually changing, as more modern anime of this type (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Striker S and Mai Otome for example), have broken with the traditional methods and have started depicting their characters in a much more realistic fashion, whilst the stories have started adopting darker, more mature, themes. . . ." ...and Dawlight's review. Video, 2019 (7:03-7:29): ". . . 'cuz thinking about the story is neither good or bad, it merely takes a tale of summer break miracles, friendship, love... . . ." --- Dawlight, 2008: ". . . Story - The story is neither bad nor good. It's merely a tale of summer break miracles , friendship and love (enjoyment is sold separately)." And they straightup don't credit or even mention MyAnimeList at all. Throughout the whole video or even in the description, which has some of MAL Rewrite's synopsis on it. Now I understand what you all are thinking... I'm probably nitpicking. I thought so too, so I decided to check out more of this YouTuber's videos. And it turns out they have done more anime reviews... and in the same way. You can go check out the differences yourself by picking one of their videos, checking the MAL DB page for that show, and look at the reviews as you listen. I've checked their Bakemonogatari "review" and it's done in the same way, which straightup plagiarizes the first non-quote sentence of 8thSin's review. Their "review" on Smile PreCure even shows the YouTuber just straightup going on the MAL page and reading off the synopsis and reviews (the latter they do after searching up a bunch of pictures). But some of you are probably gonna ask for a newer example... I mean, maybe they changed their ways, those videos are kinda old, right? ----- So I checked out their "review" on Null Peta: This video straight-up copies from Yuri-Crusader's review on Null Peta: Video, literally came out today (1:03-2:02): ". . . Now one thing I found interesting was that it's the tale about two sisters and their wonderful bond--their very strong bond--and then that everything changes when, you know, they are shook by tragedy that tears them apart. The story has everything from strong love, humor, to drama... I mean, when you make a robot of your sister and she can't [unintelligible] dark purple ribbon [unintelligible, really sorry guys I'm trying here]. . . the humor is definitely there. And carrying all the segments especially extremely well, it's heartwarming and so wholesome. The style and animation is warm, almost a bitch hottest with strong, very strong colors. It may not have the biggest budget neither the the best techniques, or the fancy CGI effects, but... it doesn't need it. It reminds me of a more home-cooked meal made with love and great care... it has a soul and a big heart. It makes it so appealingly and lovable. It's attractive, it's so fabulous, fabulously it was just that [unintelligible]... I just wanted more." --- Yuri-Crusader, 2019: "This is a wonderful tale about two sisters and their strong bond! Null and Peta. That lost everything they have when tragedy suddenly struck and tore them apart!! The story have everything from strong love, humour, to drama. And carrying out its segments extremely well! Its heartwarming and so wholesome The style and animation is warm and almost a bit childish with strong colours! It may not have the biggest budget neither the best technique or fancy CGI effects!! But it doesn't need to! Its reminds me more of a home cooked meal!! Made with love and great care! It have a soul and a big heart!! Which make it so damn appealing and lovable!! Its attractive and so fabulously delicious that I just want more!!!" Pretty damn blatant if you ask me... ----- I want to report the videos for plagiarism, but the closest thing YouTube lets you report for that is reporting under "Infringes my rights". But it's not my reviews that are stolen, it's others and it's not right that this person is copying others' words instead of sharing their thoughts by themselves. I know it feels to have people from another site stealing your work. It happened to my Fantage fan art years ago by some Fantage fans on Instagram. They were using my art in commissions for other Fantage fans and they straightup denied that they were stealing or if it was even legally questionable when I requested them to take it down. But I was a developing 15-year-old then, an artist who was so outraged that they were making multiple complaint journals on DeviantArt. And looking back now, I had the right intentions, but I was being very rash on the situation. And I don't want to be rash now... What do I do? What do we do? I personally care that people's reviews are being plagiarized for the benefit of some YouTuber, but does anyone else care? Should I even care? Should we act on this situation? If yes, then how? |

Interesting stuff you mentioned, I don't know what would happen if you report him for doing that, however: It will be ok if he at least puts some credit to the original author. |

Sadly, they don't give any of the MAL users any credit. They just state "thanks for watching my review and see you in the next video" at the end and call it a day, based on the few videos I've seen from them. If they did that, then I wouldn't be making this post. also 1200th post yay. |

Dunno how they knew about me calling them out. Stuff like the blatant-reading-off-of like the Smile PreCure video are still up though. For example, I just noticed their Princess Tutu "review" is easily ripped off of Valle's review (I've read their review many times in the past, I love Valle's review that much lol). edit: they deleted it now, yeah they're confirmed reading this. greetings. I don't want this person canceled, I just want them to have honest videos and idk how to tell them that... maybe others know how to |

Lol I don't get it, I mean if you aren't going to put the effort in to express your own opinion then what's the point? It would be one thing if the videos were getting lots of views but it doesn't even feel like something done for the attention and you know it can't be for the money because they wouldn't be monetized with so little views. Why go through so much trouble just to summarize MAL reviews for so many different titles with practically no apparent motivation... TBH I'm a little fascinated by it. |

If he wanted to not get caught plagiarizing reviews, he could've plagiarized mine--no one ever read them. It's the perfect crime. D: |

If they built up a base from plagiarizing then there's little incentive for them to stop unless they're called out. Usually though you'd have to inform the people whose reviews are being copied, I'd argue reporting by proxy is a notably scummy practice on Youtube because it's allowed people to abuse things like the content ID system. If the review writers don't care then that's where it ends, if they care enough to report it themselves they have a stronger basis for doing so. But based on the channel stats it's safe to say they can't monetize any of the videos anyway (they don't meet the subscriber requirement). I would also argue in this case though the worst thing you could do is give them more watch time and attention because it's arguably rewarding bad behavior (but since they removed the videos that also doesn't really matter now). |

With 115 subs they aren't getting much viewership out of it huh. And I've seen bigger youtubers steal stuff off subreddits, get called out for it, and nothing happens unfortunately. What often happens is that you tend to give these channels free advertising by mentioning their name and they actually gain subs off people who check them out and are interested. I mean you could get the people that wrote the original reviews to report the video, but even then I'm not sure if yt would really do anything about it. Good job with the detective work though. Fuck I just gave them free views |

People should just stop giving any attention to these anime youtubers. If there is some anime you are curious about then just give it a shot, if you need recommendation there are many places you can ask for them. Why waste your time listening to the opinion of some random stranger on the internet (and help them make easy money if their videos are monetized). If no one is watching their videos then they'll eventually stop making them. Looking at the success of a few anitubers I'm sure there are many that hope to become like them. Usually people wouldn't remember much less link the reviews they've read somewhere to youtube videos and call them out for plagiarism. As much as I know youtube doesn't seem to have any functionality to report such things so they can easily get away with it. |

Well as long as it's not sao bait I usually avoid anime youtubers. good thing for what you do, at least there are people who cares. I don't read reviews too, most of the time. just giving out free ideas for those aspiring youtuber, make a gameplay content (15-20min), comedy skit (5-10 min), make sure your voice is audible and clear to understand because most of newcomers didn't have a strong voice and their content swallow their own voice like a streamed video from a rust youtuber for example. (my personal choice when I find something to watch :P) I saw a video made from a mal user in creative corner but i forgot already his channel, it was pretty okay for me. As long as you have that fun persona you can have fun and make people happy on youtube. |

Im amazed at this, he/she managed to not get a single name right in the Bakemonogatari review, also the fact that they pointed to Senjougahara when they said "With the help of the classl president" Yeah I didn't want to mention that part, cuz there's a good amount of people on the Internet who will get batshit if people like me correct their grammar/spelling issues... But yeah they do have a real problem of mispronouncing everything. ...Which shouldn't be a problem if they watched the actual show and heard the names in the show. That brings me to the question... and I know you're reading this right now, Mr./Ms. YouTuber-who's-reading-off-of-MAL-reviews-right-now... does this person actually WATCH any of the anime they "review"? ----- Here, let's take an example once more. The YouTuber deleted the Uta Kata video I found that brought to this discussion in the first place. In its place, they just uploaded this video: I appreciate the fact that they are clearly aware of this thread and trying not to read off of MAL reviews this time. But I still have my skepticism here—not only do they continue to mispronounce the anime's title as before, but also it seems to me that they give no indication that they saw Uta Kata AT ALL. Here's what made me think about that: Let's forget the fact that they gave extremely vague comments about things like the art (the art is very good) without giving any examples. Anyone who saw the show and liked it for its art could have easily mentioned either the unique character designs (especially with those eyes) or the amazingly well-made backgrounds (for an anime of its budget at least)... Let's forget the fact that at around 2:25-2:34 in this video, the YouTuber described Ichika, the main character, as the "typical, cynical, happy-go-lucky protagonist in like any magical girl anime"... when literally anyone who's seen the show can tell you that Ichika is not a typical magical girl protagonist because the key, defining feature about her (that the series takes up a lot of time reminding you of, by the way!) is that she is a very serious protagonist and is not really ditzy as most magical girls are. Especially when compared to her foil counterpart, Manatsu. Let's forget the fact that around 3:54 in the video, they stated that the anime is highly central around teen romance, when that wasn't the main plot. Sure, teen romance is there, but it's literally just a side to the main plot whenever it shows up at all. Yeah, there's those glaring details... but... What made me feel like they probably didn't even see the anime is that at 1:35 in the video, they straight up say that the "transformations, you know, are recycled". Pretty sure they later repeat this later in the video too, bit hard to find where they said it again though, watched it late at night and forgot lol. Saying that Uta Kata had repeated transformations is just objectively WRONG. It just straightup is. This show literally doesn't have stock magical girl transformations. In fact, the YouTuber didn't even mention that this show has more than one magical girl outfit for the main character... nor mention that there's actually TWELVE outfits, one for each episode... you know, something that's literally been in like less than 10 magical girl shows... that even critical reviews of the show bother to mention... Other notable things the YouTuber neglected (or didn't even know about, likely) to mention about this anime in their "review":
Also, at around 7:20 in the video, the YouTuber says "maybe [the show could have had] more than just 12 episodes to it" when Uta Kata literally got a OVA one year after it aired. Making it 13 episodes. Even the American release adds it and counts the whole series as 13 episodes and not just 12 episodes. Even Tubi TV, which seems to be some legal streaming site, has Uta Kata legally viewable for free, and lists it as 13 episodes. Lol research fail, at least watch the show before you review... Overall this whole thing just feels pretty sketchy and wrong, no matter how big or small the YouTuber's fanbase is. When it's not plagiarism, it just feels like they're just half-assing it and just stating things that literally anyone could look up about on some random anime site. I'm really sorry to you, Mr./Ms. YouTuber-in-question, but please have some kind of integrity in your work. People would love to support you, but I'm sure that those people support honest people with honest work. If you must read off/copypaste, at least credit who you're taking your words from. |

op, I agree with you, I too got a few years ago the impression that some anime reviewers didn't really watch the anime, they just skimmed threw some parts and call it a day. I see you're very dedicated but if you have the time, just do something fun (not that there's anything wrong with what you're doing with this youtuber). I stopped watching anime youtubers a few years ago (10 or so) because they were talking rubbish just to impress, and I'm talking about the big guys. In the end, youtube is a business and views bring you money. Keep up the good work and here's this present from me with the help of google pics |

Catalano said: @Missaliensan well yeah. now that you mention this, Anime man and his gf (forgot her name) used the same sentences in 2 videos of theirs, the videos about 9/11 predicted in jojo's bizarre adventure. But I guess someone made the script and they both used it, which is fair. Yeah but since they have a relationship i’m pretty sure they wouldn’t mind either way. It’s different if someone is plagiarizing without the other person’s consent or knowledge. |

Both of their "favorite anime of the decade" videos were awfully similar, but since Joey and Akidearest (can't believe you forgot her name since she's the most subscribed anituber) are actual friends in a relationship, I'll give them a solid pass. Then again, Mother's Basement did suffer from this as well... |
