His first role as lead director was at studio Gokumi in 2013, on a little show called "Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic." He then directed the divisive 8bit anime adaptations of the Grisaia and Rewrite visual novels, and in 2017, founded his own Bibury Animation Studio. He named it after the real town of Bibury in the Cotswolds, featured in Kinmoza as the idyllic home of Alice Cartelet. Bibury studio launched with a 100% Engrish promotional video, featuring two unnamed mascot girls living in the town. This is one of my favorite pictures on the internet:  I mean, like, at least top 500 all time probably. Anyway, TENSHO (FOLLOW TENSHO ON TWITTER) is directing Azur Lane: the Animation at Bibury Animation Studios. Three months ago, we were feeling doubtful about the prospects of Machikado Mazoku, as it was one of the five shows JC Staff took on at once for the summer season. Kudos to them, as Machikado consistently maintained better art quality than many of the wide shots in the PVs for Azur Lane. I wouldn't be surprised if JC Staff has more than 5x as many... staff... as Bibury, but considering that PVs are generally known to have deceptively good quality in comparison to the actual meat of the show, that's worrying. Bibury has worked in supporting roles of 2nd key animation and tweening on a number of shows, but to date the only anime they've released is the movie Grisaia: Phantom Trigger, which clocks in at 90 minutes. Azur Lane will be Bibury's first ever TV anime. If Azur Lane somehow comes out on time every week without suffering any delays, they deserve a pizza trophy. And free tank rides and road bike accessories. As for the game's story... it is in theory better than KanColle's because it actually exists in the game, whereas KanColle's was cooked up for the show. However, the game's main campaign doesn't have any cutscenes after the first few opening chapters. The ships you get are cloned copies of the real ships. In moe military, I prefer either war games or unlikely scenarios where everyone comes out okay (Strike Witches, Haifuri). The worst you can do is death and cheap resurrection. I might like the story, but I'm doubtful. For me it seems like the show is mostly going to be a chance to go "HEY IT'S THAT COMMON WAIFU I LIKE THAT HAS NO SKINS, YAAAAAY" over and over every week. Possibly also "What's wrong with your face?" |

The girls' rigging (ship parts) being the whole ship when not in combat was never suggested in the game. Players seem to like that (myself included). The animals and flying ships weren't in it either, mixed reactions on those. (I like both) "So the Japanese are the bad guys in this one?" In the Batman v. Superman, everyone knows they'll get back together and fight the real enemy at the end sort of way, yeah. Saikoro Club has too much nice scenery, it makes me want to get back into turning my Sims neighborhood into a Japanese town. "Even Shamiko's apartment is better than this shack." | Haven't watched the Yuru Yuri, OVA (is all what matters) yet, but I'm planning as soon as possible. But I can tell that Mini Yuru Yuri is also very fun. I did watched the GochiUsa OVA (what also matters) and it was fun to see best girl Riza again. Sadly not enough screentime. I need moar Riza! So far Saikoro Club feels to me the best CGDCT this season. I think Miki is the most adorable for this season. I knew by telling from the cover I might felt a connection with the blue haired one and boy, my eyes really don't decieve me when I see a cute anime girl. Also Kandagawa Jet Girls is truly for the wel cultured of men that likes watching wet anime girls. Don''t forget to bring a towel! Rin (our MC) still somehow reminds me a bit of Yui Hirasawa (K-On!). But that's maybe because I also have Yui goggles*. Null Peta is cute, but way to short for my liking. That's the thing that it kills it for me sadly. Mainly personally I really don't like CGI, so with Azure Lane I have the same isseu, so I really hope all those cute Chinese KanColle moe shipfu's entertain me well enough. So far not really a fan of Noukin. It's a bit toooo average for my taste. Eh... Looking also forward with the first episode of Rifle is Beautiful. Honourable mentions: Bananya season 2 is the sequal we don't deserve. The first season felt OK for me, but so far the first 2 episode were much more enoyabler. It felt more natural or something. A possible explaination is that I might be a neko-boy or something, nya~ |

The fanbase seems to be fairly evenly split between lolicons and ara-cons. The recent EN poll was topped by non-lolis, Tragic Sickly Kaasan and Tragic Stoic Fräulein, yaaaay I hope they both get oath skins. (Update November 2019: They are NOT getting oath skins.) | I already decided that I hated Azur Lame before it started airing. The large fanbase just makes me want to hate it more tbh. The one thing I'm hopeful for is that of all the trailers and PVs I watched, they only showed clips from the first episode. Hopefully they have some good SoL eps coming up. If these losers seriously can't make an episode even half as good as the Kancolle curry episode then I will be severely dissappointed that I even watched this in the first place. |

It's possible to have sexualized lolis in your game but then not actually do that in your anime, it turns out you can make a pretty enjoyable anime if you do that. Also this may come from my relatively conservative upbringing but if you name your supposedly hot female boat character after a dude (or a boat named after a dude) it becomes 500% less appealing. Fate/Universe a big offender here as well. As for controversies and fanbases, well, I didn't like the other boat anime either. |

| more non-cute anime updates: Seven Deadly Sins keeps happening, I don't know whether I like it more or less when they break up big shonen shows into tiny chunks or not. Then again if they did that to Aikatsu I probably would have watched a bunch of it. the hero is overly cautious had some pretty funny moments actually, mostly in the latter third of each ep. The opponent was uh... gross to say the least. Not sure what I would do if I got summoned by a goddess that sounded like Yui but she's just as unhelpful as one would hope given that. Solid 7+, might end up in the top tier of new stuff. I have no idea what the audience for kagawa jet girls is, boat anime provided better fanservice (but also provided a lot worse fanservice, so...) Assassin's pride felt like it was aimed 100% at real life chuunis down to everything happening kind of in a way you'd expect a 14-year old's imagination to have it happen; rescuing the girl dramatically, rescuing the girl at an extremely vulnerable point, having to watch the girl get bullied by exactly the archetype you would expect, that sort of stuff. Can't think of anything else to say about this one. Maybe like a 5 1/2? Oh. Right. I got nothin. (sweet merciful crap she is cute) and it's kotecchan, good to see she didn't eat herself out of future roles. |
