Does it mean that you are a diehard fan. Do you join some forum where all they talk about is that anime? Or is it just that particular anime being your favourite.

People usually say they're apart of a fandom so other people can identify that they like that thing so people could talk to em bout it. It's like finding Twitter mutuals or something I guess.

Don't worry about being lame now, you were always lame anyway!

In my understanding, you can be a fans of something but not a part of the fandom.

To be a part of the fandom, you've engaged in some activity with fellow fans at least once imo.

For example:
I'm a fan of Fairy Tail. But I'm not part of the fandom.
I once browsed their page and FT tag on tumblr, got quickly turned off when I realized what a toxic fandom it was (maybe I stumbled into the worst part of the fandom, idk idc)

I'm a fan of BnHA. And I'm a part of the fandom. I joined it's discord server to talk about it, I posted stuff on tumblr, I translated fanarts and doujinshis for fellow fans to enjoy, etc.

So yeah, to be a part of the fandom is to engage with it imo.

This.

However, who would want to engage with the anime fanbase. Its downright terrible and full of toxic people.

To become part of the fandom, you need to stop making threads about fandoms and watch anime.

Well things above replies said.
It means you want and are communicating with other fans and enjoying this. For example I don't like Angel Beats! fans but the show itself is one of the best for me so I don't think I'm a part of fandom

For me it doesn't just mean liking a show, Its also about being active in the community online or IRL (ex: cosplaying in cons.)

It means youre really really into stuff like Avatar: TLA and Teen Titans: GO!, and everyone knows that which cartoons you watch are a super-important, defining part of your identity as a person.

(In all seriousness, substitute A:TLA and Tt:G for BNH and fma:b, and thats what many people really believe)

I don't think there is such a thing as 'anime fandom'. There's a ton of different fandoms of specific series, franchises, genres and types of shows. They all like different things that happen to be anime but are often completely opposing each other. Talking about 'anime fandom' as if it were a coherent block of mutual interests is very misleading. If you combine all the various fandoms you might call the result the anime 'community', but 'anime fandom' sounds like they're all fans of the same stuff, which they just aren't. Lots of anime fans hate other anime fans with different taste more than they dislike anyone outside of the anime community so grouping these kind of people together just doesn't make sense.

The number of people who are just 'anime fans' in general and not fans of just specific genres or some shows or franchises isn't very big, but if anything counts as 'anime fandom' than it's those people who just enjoy the medium of (japanese) animation in general without participating in the territorial conflicts and mudslinging of the individual fandoms that is so omnipresent in any anime-related community.

And of course as others said already, it all becomes moot if you never engage with anyone about your hobby. To be part of a community or a fandom, some active participation is needed, otherwise you're just pursuing a hobby in isolation.
I probably regret this post by now.

My opinion is that the word "fan" is being overused to the point that now its considered another way of saying "I like this show". So I am not at all a part of any fandom, even the Code Geass series I love so much. Being a fan actually meant having an obsession with something and you defend it despite its flaws.
Best ending line in anime history = "My name is Saiki Kusuo. I am a psychic."

Not really much, actually. It basically just means that you enjoy (to varying degrees) socializing with other people over one or more anime series. It's a pretty vague term anyway.

Honestly I think part of the problem is that "anime" is such a broad category that you get people with completely different (and sometimes conflicting) desires/goals/tastes/etc. grouped together in the "anime fandom" and placed into social situations where they think they can speak for each other (when they really, really shouldn't).

Basically, they think the circle is tiny, so when they discover someone who isn't like them, the feeling of betrayal of expectations, for some people, means that they feel the need to get hardboiled and look tough.

Agreed. The "anime fandom" is basically a very fractured group of people, who, as I mentioned above, often have vastly different ideas of what they want from anime.

Which, honestly, is probably not that bad of an idea, because it always going at one's own pace and requires no social approval. And I'm not just talking about "parents giving you dirty looks" social approval; I'm talking about "you're not watching the right shows so you look like a dork among dorks" social approval.

@GlennMagusHarvey - I've fractured apart alot from the fandom. Kinda sad because years ago I was the opposite. Nowadays, I just feel pain from joining most anime communities.

Let's stick to actual definitions, shall we?
"Fandom", by definition, means "being a fan". If you're a fan, you're part of the fandom. End of story.
Everything changes. Even the happy and funny things eventually disappear. How can I still enjoy this place then?

Do you understand the meaning behind Nunnaly's smile? She can't see or walk. So there are things in this world that she knows she can't do alone. Her smile... is her only way to show gratitude.

To be part of a Fandom, you have to first forget what subjectivity means. You HAVE to disregard the fact that people feel differently about shows you like or hate. If someone doesn't like something you like, you have to take it personally.

"You're wrong, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a masterpiece with no flaws, the fact that you gave it a 9.9/10 shows your pisspoor taste. How dare you underrate the greatest show of all time?!"

"Excuse me, how could you like Bunny Girl Senpai? I watched it and didn't like it, therefore you can't have liked it"

Oh and the ever so popular "Yeah you don't like this great show, that's cool. You watched it wrong, you didn't read the visual novels and obviously couldn't pick up on the nuances and symbolism, but yeah that's fine. I totally accept your opinion, even though it's wrong"

why would anyone do this? it promotes zero discussion whatsoever, and the meaning of this thread disappears entirely

Being part of an anime fandom means that you go on forums to defend your waifu and your fav anime plot holes with sheer determination and spewing insults. From my understanding.

That's the thing: I don't think the thread has any meaning whatsoever :p . It's like someone made a thread entitled "what if 1+1 doesn't always equal 2?".

Seriously though, I don't really have an issue with the thread, but more with the fact that people will come in here saying what it means to be a "true fan" or, on the contrary, that others are toxic fanboys...
