If you want an actual reason, the production wasn't ready for it in time.

Majority of the show is heavily to fully outsourced and don't make me start about the schedule.

Watanabe has to storyboard the next 4 upcoming episodes all by himself two of which he also has to direct and then two of his episode are outsourced to Korea.

The production is in such a dire state that they really have to go with the "functionality over style" approach to even get them out in time.

Sadly people will just jump at the throat of the next best thing they can imagine, being it the studio in question when the ones responsible for it are production circumstances and the committee.

That still doesn't justify how bad this adaption is in my opinion. Such a well known series would bring them so much profit if it is done properly, like if you can't give it enough effort why would you announce a new season to begin with.

If you like the series that's fine, but if i'm willing to see good character development and a stronger emotional setting i would read the manga, which i think does a better job at that.
I was hoping that they would exceed the manga in some ways but it seems that it's mediocre compared to it (for me, at least).

somehow the death of big mama was more emotional in the manga for me, even though they adapted it the same way it was there. that moment hanbee closed juuzo's ears i teared up, while here it was kind of meh

don't really care about unravel either, while it is emotionally strong, can't say putting it over takizawa's and haise's fight was the most fitting

The whole thing seems to be made by some sort of amateurs with original material as their guidebook, yet they lack their own sophistication to move in the right direction... Were the fights always this stupid? Exchange of piercing blow until one falls, only to raise up later? I do not remember them being this cheap. Gradually, my disappointment grows proportionally to the series diminishing in quality...

Good to see Unravel song once.My favourite song in Anime.

Better animation than last week but some parts were clumsy.

I was not talking about justification, I was giving explanation to why it is how it is.
I say that again and again but it seems to be a deeply rooted misconception:

Prestige or Popularity does not protect you from production issues.

Production issues appear in pretty much every production and are nearly unavoidable due to the nature of anime production itself. It allows for hiccups at numerous points that eventually lead to more and more problems which in return forces producers & the staff to make decisions that increase the chances that the production won't crash as a whole.

In this case the demanded schedule clearly couldn't be tackled in time so they had to make a decisions that does not affect several projects at once and outsource the main production load. Your IP can be as popular as you want, issues will appear and something will have to suffer consequences for it. Here it's an accumulation of several issues leading to a big decision that had to be made. Like it or not, it's how this came to be.

It's not a matter of effort, I always hate when people envelope that into their criticism. It's a matter of circumstances and consequences. And between greenlighting & scheduling a project and actually producing is a big step my friend. It's not easy as "if you can't do x after all then don't do y in the first place"

It is a bother that two seasons have been messed up and I would refer that to the poor management and hmm unfortunate circumstances but whatever, all we can do is to TRY to enjoy the remaining episodes.

No problem man.

I can't say much in terms of adapting the source cause that's always a joined effort by what the committee wants and what Director, Script writer & series composition ends up doing.

But in terms of production values it's an unfortunate case but I can't blame them. I'm legit sad for Watanabe because storyboarding and directing one episode while bringing in some creative aspects is extremely difficult in today's environment but 4 episodes in a row? Poor dude.

For some reasons, the episode that seems to be liked by most people is the episode I disliked the most.

The Kaneki / Owl fight was super confusing, the unravel song didn't match anything, some important parts of the fight were cut, Hinami's entrance is forgettable.

In my opinion, this was a terrible episode. I did like the first five episode, but this one was just a big mess.

There was a feeling in the first season, that you even find in root A. A kind of frightening and anxious vibe. Right now, I don't feel any of this. This is just insipid.

What really is an owl? Is it a class or a sub species?

Neither. Takizawa as you may remember was a fully human ghoul investigator and is Dr Kanou's latest experiment. Kaneki was made from Rize (Binge Eater) but he made his own identity so he was never called anything in relation to her. I won't spoil who Takizawa's ghoul half came from, but the name is a reference to that. Not a species or sub species. It's like how both Touka and Ayato are rabbits.

Its pretty cheap to want to create an iconic fight, when the animation and the choreography is not even half as good as the fight versus Jason.

I love Unravel, but it was really distracting this time. It matched Kaneki and Jason's fight, and also that root A scene where Kaneki is carrying Hide, but not Sasaki's fight with Takizawa.
Their fight was one of my least favourite things in the manga as well. I can't remember what had happened in the manga very well, but I do remember that Hinami was awesome. The anime didn't make Hinami look as amazing as the manga.

(I hope they play 'licht und schatten' this season as well. I love that track so much that I might be willing to ignore some poorly adapted scenes! Lol.)

Funny how Unravel made this episode amazing, my jaw dropped literally!

Been waiting to see this scene animated and the ones to come for so long, even though it isn't perfect I'm loving it. It's like Tokyo Ghoul season 1 which I still believe is good because it stayed true to the manga. Yes it was rushed but for someone who's already read the manga I was satisfied, this is exactly how I'm feeling towards the Tokyo Ghoul:RE adaptation

Yeah so I couldn't wait for this episode, a mixture of hype and fear of disappointment made me read and finish the re:manga.

A GOOD adaptation corrects issues with the source material, which in this case I would argue is the confusing number of relevant characters, whose appearance may be similar to other characters or indeed they have a new hair colour/look/gender and confusing fight scenes.

Honestly this anime REALLY needed to take its TIME to establish backgrounds and characters and QUALITY ANIMATION to do this manga justice.

Sadly it looks like these are the two things Pierrot has no interest in :/

I honestly believe Tokyo Ghoul was a great anime adaptation, route A despite being an abomination of a story had great animation, this is failing all over the place.

Having read the manga its really disheartening - my last ditch hope is that they pick up the pieces for the future.

Knowing the arc this is covering in the maga IDK how this anime can really redeem itself in 6 more episodes - really may drop this sadly and I was so so hype for the series too :(

Wahey, shout out to studio Pierrot (that was a dead one 😅😅)
Another great episode but this mission is taking forever... I wanna see progression. These twelve episodes aren't cutting it. (Nice to know there'll be another sequel in August; But what the heck, couldn't ya be a bit quicker)

Anyway, both kaneki and sasaki are at odds as none wants to disappear; it seems as though this story is about a special individual who will create a change that allow ghouls and humans to co-exist -fun theme, but I hope to be proven wrong with a plot twist.. otherwise it'll feel reminiscent of a story for vampires and humans to live in harmony
But either way, right now it feels like the ending will be what I had just mentioned or an endless divide between ghouls and humans; so really I just want it to be an interesting build up to what is ultimately desired by the creator.
Moreover,I need some more people to die as it was good to see a first, potentially "big" death with owl... "I think"

A production company is supposed to manage itself so that it doesn't encounter production issues and doesn't become understaffed in order to avoid forcing staff to overwork.

That's their whole job - to produce anime

this might be the first time i drop a anime solely for poor animation...

The sad thing is that i'm one of the most oblivious to poor animation and tokyo gohul re's animation is pissing me off. You know the animation is bad when one of the most lenient on animation standards can't stand the quality...

Hell the animation is just one of TG RE's many flaws. Terrible pacing, lousy editing, still frames 24/7 especially during action scenes & omitting many important details about numerous characters.

It was good to hear Unravel play during Sasaki's fight against Takizawa. It did make the fight more epic. =)

The animation was an improvement over last weeks, but reading other user's posts about how much the production staff are struggling with the show does make me a bit sad. I can only hope that they continue to do their best, despite their issues. D=

Hinami's appearance was pretty awesome as she came in to help Sasaki. She wasn't strong enough to take down Takizawa, but her fighting ability alone is still pretty admirable though.

All in all, this was a pretty good episode. The preview for next time had a different song and not that hideous ticking and static ear-piercing screech before, but what it showed was very interesting. Looking forward to it. =)

Great episode.

I'm interested too, why exactly is Hasaki called Maman? In my native language that means Uncle so in a way it sorta makes sense. XD

Anyway, there was some real good action this episode and animation improved considerably. Go Pierrot I guess?
I shudder to think what would've happened had Nutcracker actually hit Shirazu's balls. Very very dark. xD
Pretty cool they were able to take Nutcracker down.

Felt bad for Hina, it's a shame such a sweet girl ended up on the battlefield. :(

Sassan sure was getting messed up bad but he managed to pull himself together. That said what's the deal with Sassan? Is he just some sort of split personality for Kaneki or is he something more? Does that mean Kaneki is back now? I hope they shed more light on this soon.

I find it funny how Unravel singlehandedly made the whole fight and scene better. I bet there wouldn't have been nearly as much impact if they hadn't played it. Pierrot certainly love using it.
