THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
We get introduced to Hitsugi, one of Naruku’s Crows. Man, the dude got stabbed in multiple placed and got a sword deep-throat and is still on his feet, lmao. Oh well, the Altana seems to be a big issue when they can’t properly kill the soldiers if they can regenerate themselves. Man, this episode got really bloody really fast! I love how characters fight in a more savage style. Just when Gintoki was close to getting a hit on Utsuro (probably not though since the dude’s fast enough to look like as if he’s teleporting), the whole place starts to blow up. Nobume got caught in the explosion though, but luckily she’s okay.

This whole town’s in danger though. Though Soyo-hime’s trying to help the situation from a political standpoint, a good chunk of the town’s being blown to bits. We get some of stuff from Chapter 603 that was cut out in the previous episode. Zenzou’s trying to convince Soyo-hime to leave Edo, however she refuses to leave when Edo’s in trouble. Seems like Zenzou’s really given up on everything after Shigeshige’s death. We also get to see Momochi come back in this arc. But luckily... the Shinsengumi are back to save this situation!!! Yay, they’re back after 16 episodes! It feels longer though, since their last chronological episode aired 22 months ago. And their new uniforms look sooo good!

The OP plays right after the Shinsengumi come back! The Shinsengumi characters have been added to the OP in two different spots.

And Matsudaira’s helping with all his aerial ships attacking the opposing side. LMAO, and of course we don’t get a real serious moment with the Shinsengumi. This episode was just pure troll with them! Lol, at Kondo taking off his headband… and his clothes! The gorilla is still acting silly, even with that scar on his face. Hah, he takes off the mosaic, only for it to be the actual thing. The dude’s fighting like a real gorilla. Lol, Hijikata and Sougo are pure troll too! Lol, Hijikata’s new “powers” is just that he quit smoking and Sougo’s “powers” are that he’s teasing Hijikata… like he always does. But the best change of all, omg. Yamazaki turned into Rambozaki!! LMAO, how the hell does Sorachi even come up with this stuff?

Man, the last-third of the episode was probably even funnier than episode 2 of this season. We got some nice action in the first half and some nice comedy in the second half. In a way, this episode is probably a good showcase of what Gintama is. Next episode should be even funnier! This episode adapted three chapters (Chapters 604-606, while adapting the skipped stuff from chapter 603). Also, the animation was very, very good this episode. Almost all fighting shots were animated, and with some adaptation liberties taken (Similar to that Nobume and Yorozuya combo from last episode). One or two shots looked a bit off, but considering how almost everything was in motion, it looked fine. This episode even added some extra jokes too, like how the Shinsengumi can barely get a scratch on the large cannon.

Also, don't watch the PV at the end of the episode if you don't want to spoil the appearance of a certain character in the next episode... even though it's a character in the OP.

5/5

First to comment!

This episode was awesome, again, as expected from Gintama.

The highlight of the episode was definitely Gintoki's character arc (haha you thought I was gonna say the appearance of the Shinsengumi). For those that don't know, Gintoki's character was intentionally designed so that he doesn't get character development- in turn, he causes everyone else to develop around him. I find it very interesting how the theme of moving forward was incorporated into this episode. I have a feeling the Siver Soul arc is technically one big character ark for the King of Shounen, Gintoki.

If that is true, then Gintama has already cemented its place as the top anime of all time, we just have to wait for that score to adjust itself.

There was also the obvious: Utsuro's battle with Gintoki, getting to see the Shogun's sister again and seeing the Shinsengumi again after that heart-crushing arc (you know the one). Also wtf Yamazaki.

I can't wait for next week's episode! I see we will see Sacchan again! (Where is best girl Tsukyo?)

Epic episode.

The opening action sequence with Gintoki impaling that Hitsugi dude was amazing. The little skirmish against Utsuro and his lackeys actually turned out to be way better that I expected.

Soyo-hime refusing to leave Edo and trying her best to help out with the war. So much weight on a little girl's shoulders. :(

When the flying ship fired those missiles right towards Soyo-hime, I was pretty worried until Matsudaira showed up to protect the castle. Speaking of which
SHINSENGUMI!!! Holy shit! Epic entrance and the transition to the OP right after Kondo makes the opening statement was so hype! I never realized that they never played the OP until that point, fantastic transition.

The power release of the Shinsengumi was glorious, I laughed so much.
Sougo's power though. XD

Also, Yamazaki my god, Hahahaha. XD

Can't wait for next week.

Amazing episode this week. They waited for Shinsegumi to appear so they can add them in the opening as well which looks even better now. I was worried for the princess there but god Matsudaira appeared with the Shinsegumi fleet. Loved the Shinsegumi "special training and powers". They basically nerfed themselves lol Kondo fainting after stepping on his own dick when he was being badass before and Rambo Yamazaki at the end were absolutely glorious lmao So Kintoki reappears next week. I bet he still holds a grudge against Gintoki. Hope Tama finishes him off.

Let's talk about the staff and animation this week:
This week, I was scared when I saw the credits of the episode, it's a huge amount of people working on this episode, which is generally not good, but there are cases that escape this rule, like the miraculous episode 326, where we had a lot of people, but the episode was beautiful. And this episode, 345, is another miracle of Gintama's animation! An incredibly well animated and fluid episode, the best of the season so far.

Masaki Tachihara took care of the script again, continuing his great work.

This episode had 3 animation directors.

Tomoko Tanaka (田中智 子) (Half eps 271, 288, 299, 320, 326, 338)
Hiromi Suzuki (鈴木 ひ ろ み) (Works in Gintama since the first season, but I will cite only the most recent works: Half of 305, 312, 320, 326, 338)
Yumenosuke Tokuda (徳 田 夢 之 助) (Half of 339).

In addition, the episode had 2 assistant animation directors.
Youhei Sasaki (Best animator of Gintama, working as Key Animator in: Gintoki vs. Takasugi, Sougo vs. Kamui, Sougo vs. Gintoki, Hijikata vs. Oboro, Katsura vs. Shokaku.) (AD of 315, 329)
Kenichi Shima (嶋 謙 一) (Half of 276, 298, 303, 314, 317, 323, 328, 331, 336, 344)

In this episode we had the best of the best. The same animation directors of episode 326, the miraculous episode, besides Tokuda, who is a very experienced and competent animator and AD. Youhei Sasaki and Shima are also to be congratulated for their work.

The list of animators of this episode was great. We can highlight Hitomi Tsuruta, who animated Gintoki vs. Jirocho, Youhei Sasaki (I do not even need to talk much) and Noriko Onishi, one of the animators who did All Might vs Noumo in MHA (https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/30570).

This episode really surprised me with how consistent and well animated it is, the fights are very fluid and polished, for me, this episode only loses for episodes 304 and 305, thus being the 3rd best episode in Gintama animation. BNP, Chizuru and all of Gintama's staff are to be congratulated for their work.
The next episodes should not have this level, but surely this season will still have many beautiful episodes.

I put the best cuts of the episode on SakugaBooru, I do not know how many of them will be accepted by the site Administrators, but they are excellent cuts:

Sweet Jesus BNP, you guys nailed it this week! As a manga reader, I was really really hoping they'de do this material justice and damn, I was NOT disappointed. So much effort from the staff to go above and beyond what they needed to do. Makes me appreciate the studio so much. Animating even the crowd fights, which there are so, so many of- really shows how much they care. Standouts for me include the gin wrecking people while going towards utsuro and then dat camera rotation, the city being destroyed (sad, but very well done), Kagura and sougo kicking ass, and kondo moving around like a moron. Freaking perfect.

As far as the episode content itself is concerned, well I knew how awesome that'd be from the get go. The greatness is only just beginning!

Everything before the opening was so damn serious - and fucking good, to boot.
Then Gintama happened.
The OST usage also made me cream myself - although Rambozaki already drained me dry.

@YGP never thought I'd be this invested in the staff behind japanese Family Guy but seriously thanks and keep it up

P.S. Guys Tsukuyo is fine and all but spare some love for the actual no. 1 Gintama waifu Nobume

If this season doesn't get the first place in the ranking then nothing will. The last week i thought that was impossible to overcome the episode 3, but i forgot that this is Gintama.

@YGP Once again, thank you for your posts! It's great to see Sasaki animate more fight scenes for Gintama after his work in Rakuyou. Slight correction though, Shuji Miyahara actually did the storyboarding and directing this episode (it seems like the info on TV Tokyo webpage was changed last second). He was credited though. He's been working on Gintama since Sunrise's era, but he was missing for almost all of the 2015 season. He came back for Rakuyou's last episode and Porori's first episode.

In case if you're wondering, Masaki Tachihara and Shuji Miyahara won't be working on the next episode. Asami Matsuo is doing the storyboarding and directing (he did visually impressive episodes like episode 300 and 311, but also weaker episodes like 327 and... 337). Matsubara Hide will be doing the screenplay (he's been on Gintama quite a lot, like episodes 300-303, 306-307, 312-315, 324-328, 331-333, and 340-341. He also worked on a lot of episodes prior to the SA arc too). I hope Kishimoto Takashi comes back to write the screenplay for some episodes. He did 304-305, 308-311, 317-323, and 334-336.

What an epic episode. The fight scenes before the OP were amazing and the rest of the episode after the OP was even better. I'm glad to see the Shinsengumi back in action (wtf is that Yamazaki transformation), and they really contributed to the greatness of the 2nd half with all of their ridiculous comedic moments.

Seeing Sasaki in Gintama is always beautiful, he's practically slaved in the anime production, and made great cuts this week.

OMG! Gintama at its very best! All those power-ups I have been waiting for (and I was thinking I would have to wait forever) until the real man showed up! The punches are too strong. If Kondo-san's power wasn't all that we needed, we got Hijikata crushing Mayoboro and Sougo crushing mayonnaise! Until the man who ate too much pan showed up! Long live Zakiyama!

This is the best episode of the season by a long shot! The moment Shinsengumi appeared faith in humanity was lost! Because Gintama doesn't give a shit about it! Neither do I when I watch this anime!

Also, I have to say, I really liked Nobume and Soyo-hime more than I already did after their heroics in this episode! Gintama is the only anime that make me love the characters more and more as time goes on!

9/5 and rating this anime to a 10/10 already because it deserves it!

Probably they changed the dialogue to the animation in the trailer, because it fit what message they were trying to make with that trailer. In the anime, they have to adapt what the manga says, but the dialogue there is too contextual, so they couldn't exactly copy and paste it in the trailer... if that makes sense.

Hmm, I didn't find it too contextual though. I mean, they just had to show the three appearing and a voice chanting those words, so it's just the fact that they changed it from the three of them speaking to only Kondo that's causing me to ask.

Same. That's why I didn't catch up with the manga, because Gintama is just too enjoyable as an anime, that I just feel like reading the equally massive manga will just spoil it and just isn't as enjoyable as the fantastic voice acting, sound design and animation found in the anime. I'm not saying that the manga is bad, I absolutely crave Sorachi's brilliant writing, just that I wouldn't prefer the manga over the anime, at least until after it is all finished.

Like I said, I think they changed it because the animation in the trailer was meant for a specific purpose, and they couldn't just have Kondo talking if they wanted to hype up everyone coming back. The anime is based on the manga, so they didn't change it from all three characters speaking (in the trailer) to just kondo, it was the opposite; they repurposed the same animation for different contexts.

Actually, Nobume was carried by Gintoki in the manga. But the Hijikata and Sougo part was indeed added and that (and the lame sword sound effects during that scene) was hilarious XD

Oh crap... you're right, I forgot... at least I got the other one right haha, and those added naked Kondo poses were amazing!

So freaking good. Masterfully done. 6/5

Btw, I see that they changed the shinsengumi appearance scene from that one in the trailer earlier where the three of them give Gintoki his speech back. Any insight?

Yeah. They changed it a bit. Hijikata and Sougo was supposed to talk a part too, but they decided to let Kondo said it all. It doesn't really bother me since it's still really good.

They also replaced the soundtrack (Makoto no Micho) with Arega Shiroyasha like usual. And they moved Makoto no Micho into Kondo fight. 😂

We were told at the start of the anime that kondo's ass was like an Afro with a split down the middle- but just look at that smooth hairless thing! Sorachi, you lied to us! I...I...trusted you. Even after the end of the renho arc..I...i....AHHHHHghhhh *runs away crying in slow motion*

HYPEEEEEE. SHINSENGUMI IS BACK. I WAS JUMPING. That was fucking epic. I loved how Kondo used the exact same speech that Gintoki used during the Farewell Shinsengumi arc when Kondo was presumed to be dead back then. That was a really nice touch. A great entrance :')
The rest of the episode was great as well. With the short fight between Gintoki and Utsuro, stuff with Soyo, Shigeshige's sister and Zenzou and even Matsudaira's huge fleet protecting Soyo and the castle. Loved it!

The Shinsengumi power release was hilarious as fuck. Kondo going naked, Hijikata stopped smoking and Sogo being the sadist that he is. And the ending scene with Yamazaki's ultimate transformation, wtf xDDD

10/10
