So I've been thinking of purchasing another wii console since my last one broke and I'm aching to play some Skyward Sword again but then I discovered that there's Breath of the Wild for the Wii U so now I'm torn. The reason why I don't particularly like the Wii U is because of the "controller"; it seems like a quite awkward and insufficient system or maybe I just don't know enough about it? I wasn't really attracted by the Switch either because of the small screen.
What are your experiences with the Wii U?
How does it really work and is it worth the money?
Does a Wii console follow with the purchase of the Wii U or does it have its own component?
I'm sorry if the answers to my questions are actually really obvious lol I'm kind of stupid.

I only liked the Wii U for giving ''new HD version'' of Nintendo franchises: Zelda BotW, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Smash Wii U, Yoshi's Woolly World, Super Mario Maker, etc.
The gamepad is useless. I've only used it to quick start a game. When i play games on the Wii U, i just use Wiimotes or Wii U pro controller.
Back then it was worth it to play new Nintendo games for Wii U, but now i think most of the Wii U library would get a port or a sequel to the Switch.
The Wii U is like a little brother to the Wii, a horrible one but still good.

Also Nintendo said they would shutdown the eshop for Wii/Wii U in 2019, so the support is a year from now. And they already shutdown Miiverse, so there's no way to communicate with players, well... the same is with the Switch now anyway.

A friend of mine owns a Wii U, and it's pretty good, better than the Switch in my opinion. My friend and I spent many hours making levels in Super Mario Maker.

If you can find one second hand, you should be able to get one for cheap.

Well, due to the rules in my country about online shopping I won't be able to utilize it anyway so that's not a problem for me. Do I need a wii console for it to work?

No, you don't need an original Wii.

Ya boi got a Wii U. I really like it, especially Splatoon. Everyone moved onto the Switch and I can't play Super Mario Odyssey which sucks but my broke ass is sticking with it for the indefinite future.

WiiU is a perfect emulation station once you get homebrew set up. There's even a decent number of games on there worth playing.

You can pretty much play all Zelda games on the Wii U, so there is that.

I might get a Wii U just for retro stuff and to play like only two wii u games. IDK I'm debating the idea but it is so damn cheap now. I would get it for Mario Maker but with Miiverse dead isn't the game dead?

Was Wii U worth it? I mean, it depends who you talk to.

I do like the controller and the button arrangement makes me wish they would release joycons in that arrangement.

But, the pro-controller is very comfortable and lasts 80 hours for Wii U. There are controller attachments for Real gamecube and even third party gamecube controllers that just plug into your Wii-mote. Wii Motes work on Wii U. I had like 4 different controller types. It even supports a fightpad.

You could play all the old wii games with all the Wii U games. Many of which are still really good. But some games like Splatoon are no longer worth it, which is sad since you know, it is the entire reason I bought Wii U and I am enjoying the sequel on the Switch.

I would say the determining factor is if you want to play EVERY Zelda on one console and if that is important to you. If so, Wii U could be a great way to go.

But do I think Wii U is worth it when Switch is out? Not really. I think you are better off just getting another Wii having your Wii with Gamecube capabilities is more worth it.

Funny enough, I was originally going to get a Wii U. Unfortunately, it’s way too expensive for me. But I think you don’t need to buy the original just to enjoy it. I think it won’t matter any other way, in my opinion.

As much as I love the Wii U, it's not worth getting anymore. The Switch is literally Wii U 2.0. It's so much more powerful, portable, and has the best games. I already sold my Wii U and I'm saving up for a Switch.

For people in the future reading this: Get the Wii U!.

It's a great system but most importantly, you can play Wii games on it whereas on the Switch you can't.
Production for it is also over so chances are, the price for a Wii U is only going to rise in the future but I don't know.

After installing custom firmware on my PSP, PS Vita, PS3, and 3DS, the Wii U is my next target for the games that didn't get ported to the Switch, for the Virtual Console/eShop games that were archived, and to use as a GameCube. My PC is more than capable with taking the emulation route with Dolphin and Cemu, but emulation on PC just isn't the same as using the actual hardware.

No, I don't think I will.

OT: I never had one, but I played it at a friend's house. Decent enough I guess, near for multiplayer games on VC, but I can't see myself actually buying one. The only thing that I would really want would be Wind Waker, and I mean I could just use Dolphin for that if I really wanted too.

Or Cemu for the remastered version, which I think can be played with only one screen and traditional controls. My 8th Gen console of choice was a PS4 Pro back in 2019 since the Kingdom Hearts series and God of War 4 weren't on PC yet. The Wii U is a blind spot for what tablet controls were shoehorned in to which games, so I just assume that everything is Star Fox Zero at worst.

Still, it's understandable that hitting up the aftermarket, going though the process of installing custom firmware, looking for title keys, possibly having to convert some games from one type of disc image to another, and possibly having to buy additional hardware (like a Wii remote, Wii nunchuk, a hard drive, a hard drive enclosure, batteries, other peripherals, and maybe having to re-flash the NAND with a Pi Pico) doesn't appeal to you for just one game on a very niche system.

Yeah I never really messed around with Wii U emulation. If it did require the tablet for some games I imagine it would be cumbersome. I went with the PS4 as well, albeit way late into it's lifespan.

I just hate setting up multiple consoles these days lol. Right now the PS4 is all I have set up, and even then I end up using the HDMI for my laptop more often than not.

@StarfireDragon: *boots up Cemu for the first time in months*

For running Wind Waker HD with Cemu, you have options:

It'll work fine with just one screen and any controller. I'm just showing the second screen (which you can toggle on and off) because I often use a second screen with my desktop. Actual touch functionality does register if you have a touch screen, but you can use a mouse in lieu of it. Also, ignore the double pillar boxing: I'm pairing a 3440 x 1440 monitor with my Galaxy S6 Lite's 2000 x 1200 screen resolution, as opposed to using 16:9 resolutions for both screens.

Details about my specific setup aside, having the traditional one screen and usual controller option depends on the game. I imagine that Twilight Princess HD will work in the same way as Wind Waker HD, which have "perfect" compatibility with Cemu; same for Breath of the Wild if you're curious about that game's modding scene, including multiplayer.

Ooh yeah I never even considered Breath of the Wild. That might be interesting on PC. As for the remasters, is there much reason to play those versions over the originals? I know WW has the fast sail but that's about all I know.

Have long debated whether or not to get a Wii U, even when they were still out & new.
Never been a fan of most of Nintendo's exclusives, but I thought Splatoon looked awesome.
I guess the price for them secondhand isn't so bad, but the bricking issue is concerning...

That's been fixed by getting into a Wii U Recovery menu with a Pi Pico and some freeware on Github:

If anything, the greater concern with buying a used Wii U is if the seller either forgot to disable the parental controls, which Nintendo can do via customer support... for a small fee, or didn't unlink their Nintendo account with the console, which to you would make the console a brick, unless Nintendo customer support could also be helpful in that regard. Just ask the seller before buying.

@StarfireDragon: Other than the faster sail, cutting down on the amount time it takes to get the Triforce shards, photo mode, and other Wii U specific and quality-of-life features, I don't know. But, why not find out the old-fashioned way? The resources I found have been undisturbed by Nintendo for at least a year, and I'm willing to share that knowledge if you have PM's for non-friends enabled.
