| Funimation really needs to get their shit together at this point. It's bad business, and it does nothing but make themselves look bad. And they'll be feeling the brunt force of the consequences beating down on them soon enough if this continues to be an ongoing issue. It's really not just an issue with dubbing anime. It's basically a trust issue with customers who want to support the content they love, and the distributors who are entrusted with the duty of being able to provide said content to said customers. Bad business decisions are bad busisness decisions regardless, so don't screw your customers over, Funi. Otherwise, you're gonna end up going the way of bad distributors before you. |

| Most of the people that are complaining about this haven't seen the dub, and are under the wrong assumption that Gal is pushing feminist agendas or something like that. They're wrong. The dub is the funniest shit I've seen in awhile, and it ended up turning a mediocre ecchi show to a very enjoyable one. Seriously, the people that say that shit are like the same ones that say that Utena is a SJW show. It's not. | Wow, what a thread, haha. I just saw the episode today (and subsequently finished the whole anime), and more than anything I'm just miffed. Not 'triggered' or 'offended' by SJW language or whatever, I just don't see the need for it. I like watching dumb, trashy anime like this for the reason OF getting away from all this stuff, so it was just cringy hearing some of these lines. Yes, some of it is jokes, and often the stuff said are being written for characters that are morally reprehensible anyway (the cosplay cafe store manager, the main character's friends, etc). So in that regard, you can view it as character portrayal. But I think was irks people, myself included, is this weird virtue signalling aspect that seems to come outta nowhere. It's like 'hey you, look at these boobs, but respect women you weirdo!'. It's like, uh, why does that need to be said? I think back to ecchi/comedy anime like B Gata H Kei (one of my favorite dubs) and it had a lot of similar themes to this; hot girl gets with nerdy guy (except she's trying to get into HIS pants), but it didn't have all these buzz words. Or any of these insinuations. Or, ecchi/action anime like Sekirei; it never once needed to have characters recite preachy lines, or go out its way to have this SJW mentality, but it still managed to have a positive message about respecting women as equals and partners whilst also appreciating their sexuality. Sex positive messages are great, so the SJW filter is pointless. And no, I'm not some rampant dub/ Funimation hater. In fact, I can confirm that the Shimoneta blu-ray has next to no 'SJW' or political crap at all, not even for the characters that you THINK would be SJWs. So it really makes the placing of this dialogue seem inconsistent. And it's not like anyone has an issue with a message of 'women are people too', obviously not. Just seems weird that, at times with the dub, it goes out of its way to spell it in golden letters as if the anime viewers are the misogynistic sort its dialogue seemed to be lambasting. Overall, I liked the beginning and end of this anime; nerdy guy who wants sex and seemingly slutty gal both end up being pretty alright people and fall in love. The buzzwords and SJW stuff was eye-rollingly bad, and an unfortunate distraction from what is otherwise hilarious writing. In fact, the next episode has a hilarious and accurate description of NTR, and the main character’s friends make constant jokes about how he’ll be cucked. This ‘controversy’ just comes from fear, and I get that. A fear that anime fans are being hated on and treated like the creeps and women haters that the outside world sees them to be, except that it’s coming from the inside. When Funimation does stuff like this, people just freak out cause they think that the very people giving them their trashy/fanservice anime (which I’m into, not a knock on it) are also calling them bad people for consuming the media. Ultimately you gotta take a step back and get some perspective. It is sad in a way though cause the fear is real, and it makes you feel like you’re not cared for, and you can’t enjoy the dubbed anime without it being preachy. BUT, it’s not that Funimation is a SJW monolith that’s out to murder otaku fandom, as Shimoneta, DxD and plenty of other anime are often free of this sort of dialogue. TL;DR- cringey lines in a trashy anime, muddled by the (maybe) personal politics of the show writers, however there is a mountain of nuance behind this. And boy do people hate nuance, regardless of what ‘side’ they’re on, including the side that claims to hate both sides and I find them the most obnoxious, haha. Just watch your damn anime and support the ones you care about. |
