As some of you know I watch cartoons and anime and I wanted to ask you guys your opinion on these arguments since I see them a lot in the cartoon fandom. Do these arguments ever come up in regards to argument? Especially the "It's for kids." argument. My take on both arguments are this.... "Don't like don't watch." Is just an easy way avoid to criticism of your favorite and avoid having a meaningful discussion and debate. I have able to convince people who hated shows like Haruhi and PSG to give them another chance without using this argument. Anyway, I feel discussion is health thing as long people aren't trying to kill you. "It's for kids." Is such a defensive argument it is insane. Basically people who use this make the claim a show can be bad as much as it wants to be if the audience is kids. Does anyone see how fucking dumb that is and shows that person has a low opinion of kids? Anyway chime in gang. |

"Don't like don't watch it" is easily one of the dumbest sentences people throw around, especially when coupled with the classic "you can't judge it if you didn't finish it" argument. If I make a point about a show being bad, saying "don't like don't watch it" is literally never relevant, I already fucking watched it, how is saying this disapproving my point in any way? When you start arguing against the person instead of against the point, you lose that argument in my book. |

I mean, a target audience has to be established before making an anime. If the studio aims for a kids show like Doraemon and some older people rant about how it doesn`t suit their taste, of course they will get mad and try to make an argument that defends them like "it`s for kids". If we´re talking about the quality of the show, their studio has to be blamed and not the fact that it`s a kids show. |

A lot of people follow the "Don't like don't watch it." mentality, but most people here just call it dropping shows. Now when it comes to starting shows there's kind of a different scenario. If a person adamantly hates or at least tends to show a moderate dislike to say battle school related series as the most common example yet insists on watching them on a seasonal basis there's a weird disconnect. Personally if someone sees a show I like and decides it's not for them I don't take personal offense. I would rather them watch it because they want to and not because they were pushed into it because if somebody feels forced into something it immediately ruins the experience. As for the "It's for kids" argument I personally never see it. I mean there are some shows literally made for kids, some of which are enjoyed by both teenagers and adults, Pokemon being the first example that comes to mind. But that being said I wouldn't go into Pokemon expecting it to be some convoluted, edgy, overly serious anime. |

If someone really thing this is for kids then why you should convince him/her?Let him/her die without knowing what he/she is missing. A:You should watch "X".It's so good. B:Ahahaha it's for kids look at this art.You weeb. Person B likes superhero animation series , Disney movies , American cartoons etc etc... Let's me make this clear. Anime is short version of animation.Everthing that using animation is not for kids.End of story. PS:Anyone with brain can watch anything he/she wants.Don't be a dick. |

"Don't watch it if you don't like it." While utterly meaningless outside the critical perspective, is generally good advise if the person in question is trying to have a good time. "It's for kids" Isn't so much of an excuse as to the show being bad, but more a rebuttal to people who expect a show aimed at a demographic with limited reasoning skills and little knowledge of the medium to have deep and philosophical themes. It's basically a shortened version of the question "It's for kids, were you expecting something more in depth?" |

the "don't like it don't watch it" argument is more targeted towards the people who are clearly being full on masochists watching: 5/12 score: 2 "this show just gets worse and worse" solution: drop the show completed: 25/25 score: 1 "this show was terrible how can anyone like this???" then why the hell did you finish it? "this show has too many boobs in it, guh this show is so stupid" yet you're still watching.... why are you still watching? if you can't understand why this doesn't make sense to some of us, idk what to say.... unless you're a reviewer and people expect it from you, then anime is not "your homework" and no one is forcing you to watch, therefore ofc some of us are going to be confused as to why you're not always trying to be entertained watching an entertainment medium |

"Don't like, don't watch it" is very short for "I am not capable of showing why the show we're talking about is good because I don't know what good means". People who often center the discussion around something they like very much tend to overestimate a show's quality upon very plain things they like naturally, the same way they are exactly shown. Love at first sight and extreme attachment. They think everything is subjective yet don't bother to defend anything and/or get mad when someone thinks the opposite because they have no knowledge about quality. As for "It's for kids", it's understandable. While you hear lots of people praising MLP because it has continuity, writing about values and friendship, it's not like something more adult that explores further into simple concepts, accomplishes art and writing and isn't an empty shell beyond plain humor and repetitive, watered-down content. |

There are awesome kids anime like Dash! Kappei or mediocre ones like Tokyo Ghoul, demographic is not really a justification. Then you have anime like Princess Tutu that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults because it has multiple layers of enjoyment. In what context are you talking about the "you don't like it don't watch it"? If you want to watch it you should be free to do so even if you don't like it but you want to finish it (completism etc,,,). Or you could answer them that if they don't like your opinion they shouldn't read it... |

"Don't like don't watch." One of the most lazy arguments possible. Basically it gives the middle finger to any criticism no matter how well backed up it is, and allows for no further discussion, which makes it automatically unhealthy. One can make the claim that you should not be watching an anime you don't like but that's a different issue all-together, and the argument in question is just trying to avoid defending an anime or answering to criticism towards that anime. "It's for kids." Doesn't matter. I love Cardcaptor Sakura which is made for children and I'm 21, and I know many people like me who love those kinds of shows/cartoons even though they're grown-ass adults. Being made for kids doesn't mean it's bad or you should be ashamed to be watching them as adults. Once again it's just a lazy way of dismissing a show without actually criticizing it fairly. |

I wrote two reviews of anime made for children that I really enjoyed and personally thought were quite deep and well written. Happy Happy Clover Aikatsu! Everyone has some reason for liking something, but not everyone is able to explain why they like it. Avoiding the argument doesn't do any good. If you're willing to have a conversation about it you might learn a bit more about your taste. |

People are defensive and jumpy twits. If you legit wanna know what keeps someone going on a show he/she hates, just ask 'em. The it's for kids complaint doesn't work because Steven Universe and Gravity Falls are awesome. It also fails because Teen Titans Go and Pokémon Best Wishes both suck. |

"Don't like it, don't watch it." This reminds me of an episode in Dexter's Laboratory where Dexter was watching his sister and her friends playing in a tree house. He was using binoculars to spy on them. *Drops Binoculars and begins running around in circles saying: "Oh my! This is so dumb! Why am I wasting time even watching this! It's so stupi---" *Picks binoculars back up and continues watching the girls. "It's for kids." So are Trix, but I still eat those because they taste good... |

"this show has too many boobs in it, guh this show is so stupid" yet you're still watching.... why are you still watching? if you can't understand why this doesn't make sense to some of us, idk what to say.... unless you're a reviewer and people expect it from you, then anime is not "your homework" and no one is forcing you to watch, therefore ofc some of us are going to be confused as to why you're not always trying to be entertained watching an entertainment medium i kinda agree with you a bit on this one, it's like enjoyment is not the reason why they choose to finish an anime, and more like "i finish it so i can criticize it" in fact, there are some anime i rated badly but i still finished, because i actual had some interest in those series (like curiosity, or interesting characters and settings) , and i dont have any intention of completing it just to shit on it anyway, i watch for pure enjoyment, i'm not a critic or anything like that but even so, those people who finish a show they hate then go on criticizing it, their reviews still can be useful |

Anybody who uses those arguments are VERY annoying. The "don't watch it if you didn't like it" argument isn't even an argument, rather its just a way with to dodge the entire debate or comment and still trying to keep face by making the person who watched it look stupid. The latter argument you mentioned is dumb too because really child friendly anime can still be good. Makes me wonder why so many children's anime openings are excluded off "top openings" and "top endings" in anime lists in youtube. |

Tarotist said: LOL!!! I remember that episode. Great reference dude."Don't like it, don't watch it." This reminds me of an episode in Dexter's Laboratory where Dexter was watching his sister and her friends playing in a tree house. |

"Don't like it don't watch it" argument is more like is pretty dumb if you ask me cause it doesn't make sense and just an excuse to avoid criticism but some cases it's acceptable, for example if some random person just complains on the show he/she know they were gonna hate.. you can't take this guy seriously. "It's for kids" argument I don't get much from this but if I did I would tell them to watch Highschool of the Dead or Tokyo Ghoul to debunk their statement. |

Don't like don't watch phase is valid whats the point of watching it if you don't like it especially if you find this out early on? This is said a lot of the time after a argument has already occurred. |

I understand the a it's for kids thing, like Pokemon. I'm never going to recommend that to anyone that isn't a younger child. Why? Because its aimed at kids, theirs hardly any substance its just repetitive recycled & reused every. single. episode. That doesn't mean I dislike it or think its "bad" its just exactly what it sounds, for kids that aren't going to care that team rocket pops in for half the episode literally every episode trying to catch the same pokemon with the same tactics that they've used literally hundreds of times before. To me thats a waste of my time(unless i'm looking to visit my childhood), i'd much rather watch something that goes somewhere with the story, that develops beyond the mindset of a young child. Now again i'm not saying shows like that are bad, they're doing exactly what they're setting out to do and are good in that manner. But as an adult with limited time, cliche & predictable shows aren't what i'd particularly want to waste my time watching when I could be watching something that catches me off guard, makes me think & genuinely surprises me. I think that's how a lot of people who use the "it's for kids" argument tend to think. Time is precious, why waste it on something so predictable type of attitude. |
