Go Devil Z!
Damn, this show went beyond my expectations with the small cast of characters but captured its moments thanks to the intense atmosphere, competitors, etc. Too bad there weren't much romance or went deep as I had hoped but I'll score this a 7/10.

Season 2 when?!

I just realised how unpopular this anime is... I liked it though. It took me a while to get used to animation, but hey, it wasn't that bad.

I must say coming from Initial D, this anime was quite lacking for a race/car anime to be honest. The main lacking factor was as everyone already complained about the OST!

Which was just not suiting, and too repetitive which in return mace the races boring, the overall story less intense and in general just bad.

That said the overall story wasn't bad, but the focus wasn't properly laid out and made the story development lacking as well.

So all in all I was not a fan of this anime, but it isn't a bad anime either.

This ending was kind of dull on the surface, but it really fit into the overall theme of the anime. Going into this, I never expected to a racing anime to be...poetic. It's not executed as perfectly as it could be, but its narrative is compelling, as characters come into and out of focus, as they learn about their limits in speed, all around an odd and enchanting car. It felt like Akio went from being kind of an asshole to a decent guy by the end, though his character is pretty bland and unexplored. A very unique experience.

For anyone wondering why the ending is so weird and doesn't really wrap up anything: the anime only covers about half of the manga.

Honestly the show was good overall but it left out a lot of characters in the anime.
Misaki, who was supposed to appear before/after Hiramoto (BNR32 dude) was skipped through the show and started with Aizawa instead. Although, his car does appear in the background in Episode 21 when Eiji works at the RGO workshop garage.

Not to mention also that Ishida (Testarossa guy) did not appear on the show after the race they had in episode 7-10 (Can't quite remember) and mysteriously disappeared. But his Testarossa does appear for one more episode after the race where Hiramoto test-drives it along with Kitami.

The anime also only covered half of the original Wangan Midnight manga series and did not continue and finish the rest.

Another than that, the anime was really good.

This series has alot of errors which most of them are cutting animations. For an instance you can see Kei's supra tires freeze at one point when hes racing :D

The Devil Z vs Blackbird vs FC, in the end the Devil Z pulled through.

This anime definitely focused more on mechanics tuning the cars compared to Initial D's focus on racers' driving techniques (though, not always). It's exemplified in this final race with Rikako tuning the Devil Z's engine, how the FC was maintained in the years Kijima didn't race and how reducing the weight changed the horsepower for the Blackbird.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Well, this series was mostly okay. I just feel it could have been so much better. The biggest positives I can take away from it is that the CGI cars were really well done. As a car guy, I can appreciate the ones that were featured. And the CGI animation of Wangan/Shutoko during the races looked really good. That's mostly it. All the characters were just so boring with the exception of Reina. She was the only one to have any hint of personality. The main story itself, or lack of, made the series as a whole much less compelling. It started alright with Akio acquiring the Z and resurrecting it and discovering it's history. But after that, it mostly became a series of side stories of minor characters challenging the Z and 911, failing, then going back to their lives. And then there's the technical dialog. As someone who fully understands the automotive technicality of this anime, what they were talking about is mostly accurate, but quite exaggerated. And there's too much talking about the cars as though they were sentient for my taste. Snakeeyes confirms my suspicion that the anime is only covering a fraction of the source material which makes this representation feel fairly sloppy, as a result.

And thus, the Devil Z with Akio as the driver took the official title of the fastest car in Wangan, with many eyes witnessing this moment, there will be no mistake about who the king is.

This anime is a rather fun one to watch, mostly because I love cars, but looking at it objectively, this anime is pretty bland, to say it lightly. Unlike Initial D where Takumi gradually improves his skills and experiences firsthand the various skills other racers have that he himself has to overcome, Akio's skills in driving are based solely on how much he has driven in the Z, the more he's accustomed to the Z, the better he drives. At which point there's really only modifying the Z and tuning it to make the car go faster. In the end, it's true, throughout the series the Z has been endlessly upgraded and tuned, not in a significant way as the Blackbird did, but enough for a considerable increase in performance, at least for Akio. He wins this final race because he simply has no limit when it comes to his need for speed. The man who endlessly steps on the throttle is the one that glares at death.

In a way, this ending is quite fine, but looking at the overall show, the story is mediocre, and it doesn't help that the characters are all mostly dull all the time with little development aside from a few. And even these character developments are mostly evident in side characters like Eiji, whereas we know so little about our MC, Akio himself aside from his instinct to be one with the Z. For that reason. As a character, he feels more like a figurehead that holds the title of the main character in order for the plot to progress. To put it all simply, this combo of bland stories and dull characters isn't good.

Still, though, I enjoyed it for the most part. Really.
The saving grace of this show is the cars, while the racing isn't as hyped as Initial D, to be able to watch a car-oriented anime, I'm more than happy. And while one can say Initial D is better in every way, hey... Racing on the highways is a nice change of scenery. The fact that many people who know Initial D don't know of Wangan Midnight is quite interesting.

Man, I wish there's more street-racing type of show, no matter how good or bad the show is, my love for cars will transcend any negativity.

it ended very abruptly after the final race, and some of the Chekhov guns presented in earlier episodes weren't further elaborated on.

In the real world, that fairlady Z would be left in the dust by Tatsu's 911 just by judging the power to weight ratio. This episode had the most intense racing choreography by far the entire season, wished there were race scenes with this much suspense. Overall, a decent watch it does feel repetitive but I'm glad it isn't solely focused on the Z - we had several cars in focus like Rei's R32 GT-R, Tatsu's 911, Kei's supra, Kuroki's R33 GT-R and Kijima's demo 911 RWB and FC RX7. I do wish they focused less on the Z though...

It was such a good week with this anime. Atmosphere of Tokyo at night, cars and races - what else do you need? I`ll rate it as 9/10, yeah, that high. I love how characters had varied motive and they racing differently, were different from each other. Kitami-san was such a good character I should say. One of my favorites. Yeah, there`s no Initial D`s eurobeat and soundtracks not was so good, sadly, but still not so bad after all. And opening has such a good atmosphere, I should to say. But this ep dissapointed me, honestly. I liked this race but the end... This is not what I expected from the last episode. And I noticed since I watching Initial D that I don`t like when main character wins every time. I was hoped upon the last moment that Akio is not unwinnable main character, but sadly we got not interesting end which didn`t satisfield me. This anime has all what I need but there`s still not so good soundtracks and doubtful end.
