I am trying to remember to do it more. Mine is usually on 24 hours a day, but I let it hiberate or stand by sometimes and up security so it can rest. But I likeonly remember to do that once or twice a week. I guess thats not good for it..

Well, crap, now I feel bad. I used 2.2 MW·h last month.

How is that even possible unless you're running a smelting plant in your basement or something? 1MWh a month is rather heavy use but > 2 in a month? o.O

Part of last month's power bill :D

Seriously though, the biggest part of that is for the HVACs that keep the house nice and warm this time of year. :)

For those still reading, for comparison, a typical ATX computer left on all month would consume around 150 kW·h. At the rate I pay, that would amount to roughly $9 US a month.

I turn mine off when I go to bed usually, unless I'm downloading something. For my laptop, it's off whenever I'm not using it which is most of the time.

My computer's only on when I'm using. I shut it down when I don't think I'll be using it for a few hours. I accidentally forgot to shut it down once, and found it on in the morning...that was probably the longest it's been on.

Yeah, despite the fact that I know better and should do otherwise, I keep this thing on for months at a time (unless I install something like drivers that require a restart). The laptop gets shut down regularly because I don't really use it much.

If restarting to install updates count, then once a week. Other then that, it's always on playing music.

Oh, silly me. I forgot about people with electric heating and cooling. Yeah. That can clock up the watts pretty quickly, as most units start at 1kW and go upward to 2.4kW (or larger if they're dedicated systems on their own circuit). I have a wood fire, and only turn my AC on when it breaks 38C (a few times a year) so heating and cooling are fairly low in general. But then I don't live in a place that gets freezing or overly hot most of the time.

Yeah my friend's done the same thing with one of his desktops. You can like disable a whole bunch of crap so that it runs with the minimum required power.

I used to leave my laptop on overnight to download anime and then turn it off + on the next day. Now I just turn it off when I go to bed.

Crashes are restarts are what'll get a computer off for me. And even that won't last long.

This laptop used to bluescreen all the time. Thankfully, I finally got it fixed.

The only reason I turn my bedroom computer off is because the fans are kinda loud and it would be annoying to sleep through that.

The downstairs desktop though... I don't think I've ever turned that one off. It's a 4 year old fighter that never sleeps.

I turn it off when I go to bed so my mother's electricity bill doesnt skyrocket.

By the way, I say "the computer" instead of "my computer" because it is not mine, it is my mom's.

I don't have my own computer sadly :(.
