A mixture of both.

For anime, I go through the steps of;

Is it available on CR? Watch it there.
Is it on another legal streaming site? Watch it there.
If not, torrent.

For manga I always buy it. I don't like reading manga on my PC.

Someone forgot to add "Watch anime on TV". Seriously. There's actually some really good anime on tv. And I'm not talking about children's anime either. I'm talking serious anime. Also, I tend to buy them, besides of course watching them on tv, my main source of anime.

All of the above poll options, but mostly I buy it, because because the anime collection must grow. Second would be legal streaming which is how I initially watch a show most of the time, if it's good enough I buy it.

I stream a vast majority of it.

If I like it, I'll download it to keep a hold of.

If I REALLY like it, I'll buy it if possible. Only happened a couple of times though as most of the stuff I like isnt licensed here. =(

Oh, and I download too.

I also read manga online and download it, but I also buy it.

Legally stream all day everyday. Crunchyroll and Hulu <3

The only exception is stuff that's impossible to find anymore, like Gunbuster and a few special episodes.

Only works if it is something that is already airing. And TV is a good source of anime. If it wasn't for that, I would have never discovered FMA. Luckily, I was able to watch the entire anime while it aired on Animax, plus Fairy Tail (though the dubs were horrible) and a couple of other anime as well (such as Kaichou-wa Maid-sama!, Bleach until end of Bount arc, etc.).

The ones I watched on Animax (+ Cartoon Network) are, thus far, the only anime I've watched legally. Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to buy any. Though, I will watch Shugo Chara! on CrunchyRoll making that my first legal stream and later rewatch Ichiban Ushiro no Daimou on it as well.

Out of curiosity, I was wondering how many people actually buy their anime, or if you just stream it.

If you do purchase, is it a lot?

I will really only buy an anime if it is good and I will want to watch it over and over again, all other anime i stream. (Cheaper this way)

Yes I do, if it's enjoyable, if it's one of my favorites, and if it's cheap enough. I've bought a couple of used dvds, Final Fantasy Advent Children was less than a dollar with 3 dollars shipping on Amazon. Though I buy most of mine from Righstuf. Might not have bought Afro Samurai if it wasn't the directors cut for 5 bucks.
