That's a pretty good mean rating I'd say. However, whilst we do have a few disagreements in score, the only thing which really confuses me is why you'd give a 7 to the terrible wankfest that is Kamisama Dolls.

I just added a bunch of the tens from your list, they all seemed to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks a bunch.

No...I mean, hell, Bleach made me cry once (I was in a bad place at the time *shudders*), but it is faaar away from being a masterpiece (just this person's humble opinion). However, the last anime that made me emotional like I was PMSing, was Legend of the Galactic Heroes...I gave it a 10, not only because it really got to me, but because it is, again in my opinion, a masterpiece in characters, story, art...of course, like any anime, there are a few things I don't like, but the sheer awesomeness of it blows the bad bits away...and it made me cry like a little girl.

not at all, it could be just one moment so that wouldn't change my feelings about the anime as a whole.

It depends. Movies and shows generally don't affect me that much, so if an anime litterally has me sobbing in the restroom even on the second viewing, I'd say it deserves a perfect ten.

Not necessarily a 10, but if it evokes that much emotion from me it will be 8 or more. Obviously it was able to evoke emotion from the viewer, which makes it successful just by that. Also, I don't cry often.

It's quite easy to get me emotionaly attached so that's not the most important criteria.
I cried at Angel Beats!
I cried 4 episodes straight through Clannad ~AS~...
I even get wet eyes at nearly every Fairy Tail fight/amv.
Of course those Animes are my top rated but crying is no 10 criteria.

I think it depends on the person. If it makes some who cries easily cry, than no, they shouldn't just click a ten. I wouldn't give it a 10, but maybe a 9 depending on how it ends. I don't cry that easily.

Not really. There's more than one reason why an anime would make me cry, but that doesn't always mean it's that great. I guess it's good that an anime actually makes me feel something, but I wouldn't give it a 10 just for that.

No, just because an anime makes me cry doesn't mean it's perfect. It does mean it's done a good job at hooking me in and making me feel connected to the story/characters to make me cry. However it doesn't mean it deserves a 10. I've seen some animes that were just full of cheesy humor and no story but then it comes at me with a well-done sad episode and then a single tear falls from my eyes. ;( Doesn't mean it's OVERALL a great anime though.

I'm actually really iffy on 10s because it's literally saying it's like the perfect anime, or shows that you're a possible biased fan. Kind of a touchy subject I guess, our scores are all based on our own opinions after all.

Depends on the plot. I'll cry and give it 10 if its a romance and if the route taken is very sad but ends well.

An anime that makes me cry is generally a series that I've enjoyed enough and related to enough to gain a quite high score from me, and if the reason for why I cried was executed perfectly along with the rest of the anime, I'd consider giving it a 10. But otherwise, the amount I cry during a series isn't really something I tend to score on. c:

I cried a lot watching anime (not that I'm a sensitive person).

Watching Doraemon and Pokemon also makes me cried. So, the hell with that..?

I wouldn't simply just gave them 10. For me, the rating depends on the plot of the anime.

If the anime is good enough to make me cry its probably going to get at least a 9. Giving 10s based entirely on it making me cry though? No. Just being attached to a character isnt enough. It has to have a good story and if possible, I prefer it to be happy as well as sad.

Still, I am normally very impressed if something makes me cry.

Personally, I wouldn't. I mean, AnoHana made me cry, but I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece at best.

Any thoughts on this?

I think I would give it a pretty high score, i mean if it made you cry then it must have been pretty emotional and well done in order for people to feel like that towards an anime.

This...

If it can make you cry it's good, regardless of errors in the story or stuff like that...

But I rate anime based on how much I liked it, so if it is the worst anime and I like it I will give it 10... So it doesn't matter if it makes me cry or not...

If it's made me cry, then it's probably done well enough to get at least an 8, because I must have reached the stage where I care about it so much, but not necessarily a 10.

I wouldn't. It depends how good the story is, not if it made me cry. Although I like most animes that make me cry :3

Unlike most people, I feel that an anime that's able to make me cry dictates a huge portion of its quality as a whole.

In order to make someone cry, you need to not only have a plot that either pulls off tragedy or tearjerking happiness exceptionally well, but you'd need to develop on the characters involved first, to the extent that our empathy with them is strong enough to invoke such an emotion. As plot and characters are the most important factors in anime for me, to do both of these things well enough to make me cry definitely deserves some merit.

With that said, there are occasions where a consistently average plot can produce a golden moment from nowhere. (Such as the ending of Zero no Tsukaima series 2.)

I gave it an 8.

Catch 22: if an anime makes me cry, that means it's really good; therefore, I hold it to a higher standard than I would otherwise.

I never give out 10s, regardless of whether something makes me cry or not. The best rating an anime can hope for from me is a 9.

All a series need is music and tragedy and probably someone on screen shedding tears as well and most people can't help but shed some tears as well. I think you're overestimating people in this. We really do cry quite easily.

Nope. TokyoCandlelight is right. People need to feel connected to the characters, and they have to find the story believable.

You sound more like an outlier. I am, too, but in the opposite direction -- it's very difficult to pull me in. The only anime that's managed yet is Clannad. (Then again, I haven't watched many... )

Outlier? Melodrama usually involves sad music, tragedy, and tears being shed. Many could have rather mediocre character developments/depth and plot. I don't think "exceptional" execution is needed for people to cry. As s/he already mentions, some average shows are capable of pulling this quite well - it needs to have specific devices that pulls your heartstrings, less than how much depth or development characters have or what the plot is.

Clannad also had these 3 elements as well. They could have good characters and plot, but these 3 things usually disproportionally elevates people's emotions. I don't feel like I'm speaking of a minority here.

Melodrama doesn't pull people in enough to get tears. Drama -- a proper setup, with proper characters and proper story -- does.

Do soapies get tears out of you? They're based entirely on melodrama. If something like that can't get tears out of you, then the criteria for getting somebody to cry in reaction to your work must involve something other than melodrama.

Most of the shows I have given a 10 are ones that made me cry at some point. Unless it is just pure comedy or something.
But shows that really pulled me in and made me become attached to the characters and the story will usually have me cry at some point and at that point I might give it a 10.
But no, not all shows that made me cry get a 10.

No, I don't think crying makes for an automatic 10/10. An anime can still have a lot of faults, even if it succeeds at establishing a strong emotional connection with the audience.
Of course, this is certainly a big plus if it does manage to do so, and likely means a lot of thought was put into the show. Definitely a case-by-case matter, though.

Ima say no. While the emotional impact of a show can definetly up its rating for me, it's not the only factor that I look at. Usually, though, if an anime can make me tear up, then it's met plenty other criteria for being a quality show, and I'll bump the score up for that. But I wouldn't give a show a straight-up 10 just for that.
But I've only teared up for less than a handful of shows, so it's not really something I try and count on for quality anymore.

However, for Hadashi no Gen, I gave it a 9 overall since I'm wary of handing out 10's, but I did tear up (rare for me), so I gave it a 10 instead.
So technically, yes, I've given a show a 10 for making me cry, but it was already at 9+, so that's fine.

It would have to be really good to make me cry. :U So probably.

However, there are always exceptions. If it's at episode 6 and it made me cry i'm not giving it a 10 right away. If the ending sucks that gets it down a few points regardless of what emotion it allowed me to feel.

After all, I gave Madoka a 10 and that didn't make me cry.

Sometimes i cry because i'm laughing too hard at the cheesiness (Sekaiichi's stupid background song that comes up every time they touch fingertips in the hallway for example). An Anime has to be entertaining to me overall for me to give it a 10. Crying is only a small victory.
