Hello, I'd like to tell you about a software I made specially for us, MAL users: Mal Updater

This was first anounced back in February but still many users don't know about it. Original anouncement: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=13996

This program connects to the website with your MAL user account and retrieves your Anime list. From here on there's a lot you can do:

- Start watching some Anime in one of the supported players, and MalU will detect which Anime and episode it is, and update your MAL list automatically with the last episode you have watched. That's right: malu will check your video players and identify the Anime and episode.
- See how many people are watching the same Anime at the same time, and open a chat window with them
- Manually sort and update your list from MalU (episode watched, score, status, etc)
- Tell MalU to search in your hard disk for the next episode of the Anime you are currently watching, or from any in your list, and launch it in your default player. You can even use a HotKey and hook a mouse button for this. There is also an option so that malu automatically launches the next episode when you close the player
- Have it automatically check TokyoTosho for torrents of new episodes for the Anime in your list, have it download and launch the .torrents automatically according to some filters, and even tell uTorrent to store each file in its own Anime folder, if you have set it for every show. You can even have it automatically discard either MKV or AVI when both versions are present.
- Check your hard disk to see which Anime have new episodes available, and how many
- Show in MSN and mIRC what you are watching, including your score, ep/eptotal and a URL to information of the Anime. You don't need to install any extra plugins or scripts in msn or mirc for this.
- Show in mIRC what you are listening to in either winamp or Last.fm. No extra plugins/scripts either for this
- You can make your own php forum signature which shows what you are currently watching, your last updates etc..
- Batch rename your Anime files to some criteria like Fansub - Anime Name - Episode
- Send your computer system info to a mIRC channel (ok this is unrelated to Anime, but you can use this to replace any script/dlls you are currently using). It has full 64-bit support and detects more than 4GB of ram
- Easily move and rename entire folders of Anime with a batch tool.

Some screenshots, click on the reduced ones for a bigger image:

Main window. Vista 32/64 is fully supported, including blurry glass window, UAC for file operations, and live thumbs. The Anime panels colors change according to mal status, airing status, playing, etc..

mIRC and MSN features in action: (MSN URLs from other people in your list are clickable with MSN9). The variables and styles for mIRC are customizable

Main menu and Anime menus.

Tray notification for scheduled updates. You can customize the time for this and also the picture through themes

Torrents window and options/filters

Special tool for renaming and sorting your Anime files and folders

Themes: You can choose from a variety of existing themes (currently 80), or even make your own. There is an easy to use themes editor. Themes support full alpha blending features, as you can see in the first screenshot.
Check our complete themes gallery here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=13935

Help and settings wizard

There is a very detailed help manual explaining every single setting and feature (besides our own club forum where people posts with questions, feature requests etc)

The application is updated regularly, including an auto-updater which detects new updates and auto-downloads them. Amongst the upcoming features is full support for remote controls to perform various actions (play next ep etc). This will be very useful for people with Media Center pcs without keyboard/mouse

Cpu/Ram usage: being a native win32 application, it doesn't use the bulky .net framework, thus using very little CPU and RAM: (idle, logged in with 328 anime)

Operating systems supported:

- Windows 32/64 bits, from 2k to Vista
- Linux with wine library (only manual updates in this case)
- Probably works in MAC as well with wine (not tested)
- .net framework is NOT needed

Players supported: (you can request more players to be supported)

- MPC(+HC ed), MPlayer, Zoom Player, GOM Player, Real Player, Winamp, WMP, BSPlayer, VLC, Core, KMPlayer, DivX Player, SMPlayer, JetAudio

To get started, join the Mal Updater club for info and downloads: http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=907

I love this program. I honestly don't think I'd even bother with MAL without this program. Honestly... one is no good without the other. It's easy to use, easy to customize, and much much more than just an automatic updater. It's a complete anime computer companion. Just check it out if you haven't, you'll see what I mean.

It's like Last.FM website and software... Except that MALu is way better than LFM software lol. It's not only the auto-updating... is the autorename and sort of the anime collection, the auto download of new releases, the ability to search if you have any new episodes for an anime, being able to play them with a click instead of searching each file, messages to mirc and MSN. etc...

Yes I do realize I am a MALu groupie.

Auto rename is bad. Means you can't help re-seed old series n stuff. :( I like original filenames. Which is probably why MALu fails to recognise a number of series I watch because of odd naming/numbering formats, so I still have to update my list manually.

That is indeed the biggest .torrent fault not being able to check if a file is the same when you change the name... Auto-rename as everything in MALu can be turned on and off anyway.
But I find really strange that you have issues with the recognition, it's been like months since I last had any issues of that kind. you sure you didn't lower the recognition level in the settings?

Yep, quite positive. The problem is, some stuff I've watched recently just hasn't been numbered according to MAL's db. For instance Guu Final OVAs were 1-2 as ep 1, 3-4 as ep 2, 5-6 as ep 3 etc. MALu just took the last digit (ie 5-6 = 6) and tried to update the currently watched total to that.

I have been using this program for about five months now and it's incredible. Not only does it update your list automatically, but it also serves as a shortcut to different MAL pages. There are occasional problems with recognition (say, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei vs. Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei), but they don't happen all that often and Kotori is really good about fixing them (and until it is fixed, you can easily update it manually from within MALu). He keeps expanding the program too with new features. All this... and it just runs peacefully in the background, not even taking up a lot of resources.

As long as you have two minutes' worth of patience to set it up and customize it, I highly recommend it. It's a great program and probably the best thing since MAL.

*sigh* and judging from the "what OS do you use" topic, we probably won't be seeing a mac version, huh?

I think it most probably runs fine on Mac under wine, same way as in Linux, however, auto-updates are not possible there. (manual updates and torrents do work though)

I can never help but think that MAL makes me think of viruses. x.x

But anyway, this software is AMAZING. It reminds me of Last.fm, where after you listen to a song, it shows up on your "recently played" list. Except this one has tons more features. Bravo!

I can recommend it.

It's great work and it has it's merits.

You also don't have to keep it running all the time and still decide to do some things manually. So just try it out.

I'm working on that, but it might take a while. You can probably use it with Wine for now to run as a windows app.

This is one of the best tools ever.

Loved your rename tool. Easy and fast. I just have to be careful with some weird-named episodes. It sometimes screw everything up.

Just a quick question before I download it... How does it update your list? Is it at the same time you open the file in mediaplayer or like last.fm, when you've been watching it for some time?

You can either:

- update only manually
- have it update right away when you start the episode
- pick a delay for update between 1 and 20 minutes, where you can cancel mid-way
- have it update only after you close the player or play something else

You can still do it manually with this app, faster way to access and update your list. (disable recognition so it'll never update automatically)

I guess I'll try the third and fourth option =) And in case I won't like it... manual updates shouldn't be much more difficult than pressing a plus sign, ne?

Thanks ^_^

I'll be needing a few beta testers for MalU 2.0 in 1-2 weeks who have time to stress test all the features and find possible bugs. Please post here and watch the topic if you have time for it:

Mac version will still take some time since I don't have a Mac to develop on and test, and I haven't been able to run a hackintosh properly either.

It compares the filename against your list. I suppose if your list is in Chinese it'd be fine, but afaik no MAL entries have Chinese names.

So, no, it won't work.
