Anime you thought you won't like all that much, but ended up being one of the best things you ever saw

More examples than I could offer, simply because EVERYTHING could wound up as the best thing you've ever saw under the right psychology when watching the anime. Heh heh...

But to name one example would be Mirai Nikki. One of the most underrated anime ever, IMO, and one of the most underrated characters ever (Hino Hinata). Nine member favorites? Seriously? She's the only sane man and she only got nine favorites? Dang, she was shot in cold blood for being the only person trying to do the right thing for god's sake... I digress.

I found Mirai Nikki to be especially impactful for me because of its underlying message - life is a game, and no one is a loser when one strives to win. There's no sane or insane. There's no good or evil. Just the object of the game and what you do to win it. The inclusion of diaries as tools to predict your future works well thematically. Your future is in your hands, yet it's your will to strive towards your 'Happy End' that makes it different from a Dead End. Philosophical stuff.

Probably every anime i've ever watched... All it takes is a dodgy PV/review/synopis to shake my confidence. Although notable exceptions are Clannad and Girls und Panzer.

I never thought I would like Slice of Life anime, but Toradora! and Boku Wa Tomodachi Ga Sukunai are two of my favorite anime now.

Fruit Bakests and Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad

For Fruit Baskets, I thought I wouldn't enjoy because it's a shoujo and I was just starting to watch anime, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I ended up enjoying it very much and actually plan on reading the manga soon.

For Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, I wasn't too crazy about the art style and found the first episode to be boring. However, once I watched more episodes, it ended up being one of my favorite anime series. I gave it a 9 and like Fruit Baskets, I'm planning on reading the manga.

Uchouten kazoku. I want into this show with no expectations, and just a weird thought of what that description was supposed to be mean. But it turned out to be one of my most favorites of the last few years

Same with Mushibugyou. I figured it was going to be another one of those dull Fanservice ridden shows that had zero to no plot at all. But it ended up being pretty fantastic

Older shows like Samurai 7 had the same impact on me. The 3d Looks awfull, and the art wasn't really there. But the story and setting was just marvelous. Absolutely loved that series.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, i started watching after i saw one of the characters, Chrome & i thought she was awesome. Then, when i started to watch the show, the first twenty episodes were bleeeh, but i didn't give up. After that, i started loving it <3

^^ this
except it took me three tries until I got past the first few eps.

Same boat here, except i still haven't given it another chance. I've tried 4 times now, but i simply cannot get into it... I hear allot of good things about it, but the first bunch of episodes feel like such a drag.

School Rumble

I saw the first episode and I wasn't hooked enough. It felt boring what with it having a biker and a couple of school girls and it being 25 episodes long. It was too much to start with.
But after watching two more episodes into it, I started to really notice the genius in the comedy, characters, and the plot.

The art style put me off, but eventually I decided to give it a go and it was one of the best Anime decisions of my life.

Blue Exorcist and Bleach.
They were both anime that were recommended to me by friends, but I kind of hesitated. Neither of them sounded like something I'd like, but I ran out of things to watch and ended up watching them...and I actually really enjoyed it!

The most recent anime I can think of are Uchuu Kyoudai and NGE. Uchuu Kyoudai having a rather boring synopsis and lame cover picture and NGE being mecha.

Attack on Titan. I honestly thought it was the most stupid sounding anime ever. I don't usually judge a book by its cover, but I am human. I make mistakes and lie to myself everyday.

Air. I thought I would like it as much as Kanon 2006 but I did. In fact, maybe a little than Kanon 2006 (I HAVE A THING FOR UNDER-APPRECIATED STUFF, DON'T HURT ME!!! ;A;.)

And Garzey's Wing. I thought I was gonna HATE it like I hated Eiken but it's so bad...that' it's beutiful. (I'm sure that this doesn't count to some people. :P)

Yu-gi-oh 'season 0', was the last one i watched. I won't say ''one of the best things i ever saw'' because was not it; but i really thought i wouldn't like it and in the end i did, despite being so much different from the Duel Monsters series i totally changed my mind. In fact now i wish the Duel Monsters was a bit more similar to this season 0.

Girls Und Panzer. It was recommended to me and I thought "ok, cute girls doing cute things...in tanks? What?" . But the technical aspects were done really well and the battles were just freaking cool! The characters weren't bad and there wasn't as much fan service as I expected too. Overall it was really fun.

oh yeah,... Haruhi....i heard of the endless 8 and all the haruhi fanboys/girls out there and the chronological order vs the air order and the stupid dance and i thought "damnit, let me just knock this one out and be done with it" and i watched the air date order and i didnt like the first few episodes but by the time i finished the first season i started to like it. I even watched the full endless 8 and enjoyed them a lot... kinda weird but i liked em, i love the series now after finishing the movie

While I did think I'd like Shinsekai Yori quite a bit, never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would become my favorite, dropping Code Geass and Death Note from their position, which they held for 5 years. Now I dream of another anime, an anime that can top even SSY, but hard to see anything that can top it. Hell, I'll be glad if there'll be anything that can top Usagi Drop, which is my fifth top favorite.

I would say the same, but I expected it to rock when I first began watching. Too bad, I finally got a good start with the game and my fucking PS2 decided to go for an eternal sleep. Time to buy a new one, not gonna cost much, after all.

'One of the best ones I saw' is not what I would call it, but Uchouten Kazoku was a great example I didn't expect much of which turned out to be my favorite of the season. Before that GirlPan is probably worth mentioning too, as is Maou-sama.
I probably regret this post by now.

I used to think female leads were boring and the animes summery was meh worthy. Turns out I was watching the wrong shows. Once I started watching these three, I could not get enough of them. Art is mind blowing, story is great and characters are logical and fun.

blast of tempest- i'm not grouping this with the other shows since this wasn't hyped that much but it was a great mystery. this anime has a lot going for it
