According to Anime!Anime!, mangaka Akamatsu Ken established a stock company J-Comi with Deguchi Ryusei. The aim of the company is to provide discontinued manga electronically for free. As a test launch of the beta version, all the fourteen volumes of Love Hina manga will be available for free downloading from November 26th. The full launch will be made on January 10th 2011 and scans of out-of-print manga will be provided in PDF format without copy protection.

Akamatsu came up with the idea when he started to receive letters from fans, who obtained his manga by illegal downloading. He thinks it's impossible to eliminate the illegal scans from the internet and it would rather be beneficial if the authors put advertisements to the scans and earn revenue from them. Akamatsu has found the way to establish a "Library of Out-of-print Manga" independent of publishers because publication contracts of manga usually expire in three to five years. Akamatsu is also planning to enable the users to upload scans and to share them via J-Comi after the inspection by the staff and the addition of advertisements.

That would be the best, especially here in my home country where most mangas are unavailable and most readers access them illegally. Thank you, Akamatsu-sensei, for coming up with such a great idea!! :D

Exactly. I could never understand why the publishers clamp down on stuff when copyright laws don't cover some of these works.

Anyway, I won't say if this is a good or bad move, but it certainly is interesting. I do know that there are some mangaka that are perfectly fine with illegal scans but this is the first time, I believe, that one of them has come out to openly upload their works on the net. Trailblazer? Subtle form of advertisement?

hallelujah!!! my prayers have been answered
"Forged in darkness with wheat harvested from Hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzabub; slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chickens, force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one-eyed madman. Cheese boiled from the rancid utters of fanged cows. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood."

Nope, now groups will be able to do legal translations without worrying that a nasty letter will show up.

Way to go, Ken Akamatsu. And I want a good scans of Love Hina, too! The one I obtained "Illegally" is in poor quality! (But I still read it for about 3 to 4 times!) Lol! XD

Personally I like to have my manga in my hand so I suggest that they still contact a publisher about paper, but once that contract expires about 3-5 years, they should upload it to the internet.

it's good news ^_^

Uploading ability means people could probably do scanlations and, pending staff approval, make other language versions available for those of us who don't read Japanese. Including, but not limited to, English, fan support allowing.

But I do wonder how annoying the ads will be. Considering that there is no copy protection, anyway, it'd be nice if they'd make an ad-free version available for purchase to those so inclined. Honestly I'd rather archive a quality, ad-free scan, than a free version with ads that will be out of date before the end of the decade. Either way, though, this sounds awesome. I wish them luck and hope it turns out well.

Although, erg, considering the quality of CR, I sincerely hope the quality of the scans isn't sub-par. I love legal means, but poor quality is a huge turn-off, even if it is free. The fact they they plan on making them downloadable is already a plus on their side, though, so here's hoping.
