All terrible to the point where I'd rather watch with NO volume and subs rather than any dub. I've actually done this when subs were out of sync with audio

I don't understand all the hate toward English dubs. They are necessary, or indeed essential, for people who can't read, like small kids, the visually impaired, or the average American.

English dubs are usually fairly well-done. I see nothing wrong with them.
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

I love them just as much as the original. Depending on the type of show I'm watching, I switch between dub and sub.
Sometimes, dub can even enhance my experience with a certain show if the sub doesn't click with me for some reason. For example, my all-time favorite anime is Re:Zero, but I don't think I could've liked it as much if I only watched the sub. No offense to the original audio, but I could immerse myself into the show and catch the emotions a whole lot more through the dub.
People who say dub VAs have no emotion have likely never tried to listen to them properly in an unbiased way. Yeah, "dry" VAs exist, but not all of them are like that (not that the haters are ever going to listen).

The only time I genuinely dislike a dub is when they change the original dialogue (note: not localisation, but changing the meaning and context altogether).

My are opinion is that they're usually crap, and I only watch them when I can't find a subbed release. RErideD: Tokigoe no Derrida was the one time I've come across a dub that had decent VA selection.

I'm German and love english Dubs.

Not very fond of German Dubs tho. But I am glad they exist - if I hadn't watched the German Dub of Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Digimon and One Piece as a kid I probably wouldn't watch any Anime nowadays.

If you enjoy it, you do you. I don't think gatekeeping how people prefer to watch anime is a good thing.

I watch some english dubbed like Hajime no Ippo right now which I think is done well. If I don't enjoy the dub I can just switch to subs. Easier to multi-task with english dubs.

All English dub is a garbage for anime and non-american/not American oriented games. English voice actors just a bunch of amateurs plus very few people which are everywhere for 30 years. I am not surprised that foreign movies don't have English dub in USA because these movies will sound like teenager drama or nickelodeon cartoon despite genre or theme.

i love them, it's actually my preferred way to watch anime (I love subs too but when the choice is offered, i'll pick dub.). I generally absorb information more efficiently if i hear it vs readng it.

Unless a dub is just trash, but otherwise i stick with the dub.

I also have a selection of Dub VA's i love hearing

(Also, lovely Sakaki artwork.)
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Dubs have no originality. While some are really good most others fail to convey the actual message of the anime especially in certain slow paced shows.

Considering I can understand Nihongo fluently I really don't need to watch Anime dubbed in any other language. Though English Dubs are useful when watching Anime with Western friends during social gathering so people don't need to keep their eyes glued to a TV screen just to understand what the hell the characters are even saying. As far as English dubs go, they are far better than Japanese Anime dubbed in any other languages and most of the time English dubs are actually recorded in better recording studios than even the voice acting done in Japan. Where most English dubs are actually recorded to support 5.1 surround sound, which most Japanese Anime dubbed in Nihongo lacks.

Japanese Anime dubbed in either Mandarin or Cantonese is sheer cringe....

Japanese Anime dubbed in Hangugeo is recorded usually in a decent studio but the actual voice acting is usually 3rd rate....

Japanese Anime dubbed in Hindi just sounds awful (it's mostly been done by some guy voicing over the characters speaking in Nihongo)

Japanese Anime dubbed in either French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or even Russian is beyond awful simply due to being dubbed in what seems like beyond third rate recording studios (it's usually just horrible sound quality that ruins the experience).

Have never watched a Japanese Anime dubbed in either Thai, Polish, Arabic, or even Turkish but I have been told it's god awful...

There reason why I think Japanese Anime dubbed in English are better than dubs in any other language besides Nihongo is because the West has turned dubbing Anime in English into it's own industry over the years.

I still bear scars from the horrible English dubs of the 80s. But they have gotten better over time. Still, I'd rather watch subs to glean the original emotion content provided by the VAs. Although I have to say, over many years, I have picked up some Japanese and found a lot of subs are real sketchy, too. So damned if you do. Damned iif you don't.

I watch dubs just because it gives me the opportunity to look away from the screen for a moment if I need to without any major consequence. But I used to watch dubs exclusively for a long time, so I don't really care either way.

@rohan121 Ah interesting. What kind of censorship is common in dubs? I'd imagine censorship would be much more likely to go the other way around (EN to JP).Are there any particular things which often get mistranslated/poorly localized that you've encountered before?

@LeonhartAugust A lot of dialogue and stuff does come off unnatural in English a lot of the time. I assume this is due to the difference in how the two languages differ culturally and more specifically how people communicate differently in their respective cultures. It also probably varies depending on how localized the scripts are.

I watched a handful of dubbed anime when I was just getting into it (they were easier to access, since they aired on TV, and dubbed VHS were generally cheaper to buy than subbed VHS), but I haven't voluntarily watched a dub since around 2002. I can't think of a reason for me to watch an altered version of an anime when I can just as easily watch the original version.

Dubs were mostly pretty terrible when I was younger, though I do remember a handful of decent ones. I know they've improved overall in recent years. I had to watch a few with my mom when she was first getting into anime, since she wasn't used to subs (though she switched to subs about 5 years ago, and hasn't watched a dub since), and while I wouldn't call any of them good, some of them were fine. I wouldn't watch another one, but you could at least tell that effort was put into it.

I have no problem with other people watching dubs. To each their own, especially when it comes to something as trivial as this.

All dubs are trash stop defending trash for example one piece which is in your favorites has the worst dub all the voice acting is horrible especially luffy he sounds like he has lung cancer if you watch one piece in dub your a psychopath. I have compared subs and dubs they are all trash I know you have to defend dubs because you have sunk cost fallacy but it's not too late to change

They're pretty solid these days. A lot of people really over-exaggerate the things they don't like in them these days and act like the 4Kids style is still the norm when it really hasn't been for quite a long time. While I prefer watching in Japanese, I do think most dubs these days are solid and generally equivalent experiences to the original audio from what I have seen.

English dub nowadays are far better than what a certain vocal group of otakus would like to admit. While they have yet to surpass the work done by Japanese seiyuus, English dubs are no longer stuck in the dark ages of the 4Kids era.

I enjoyed watching Dandandan, Sakamoto Days and Monster in English dubs. others were preferable in their original version.
I usually start with subs, switch to the dubbed version and choose.
