What do you think? It's far from its prime that's for sure. I remember it being much more active during covid days. Not to mention the number of active users are not many. I've been seeing the same users post regularly from the past 2-3 years. Have stopped seeing many past regulars as well.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

This question has been asked so many times and so far it is not even close to being dead, just make interesting threads, than there will be alot of people in comments, as recently there aren't that much of a good stuff.

If you wonder, here's a few of past such questions I've found:
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1511463
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1810685
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1695596
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=199910
https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1863352 - that one is from covid times.

Within next 5 years there will be 5-10 more threads like that. The answer is always the same as it has been asked since 2009/10 if not even earlier.

REALLY wonder what might have happened that steadily made people stop browsing the MAL forums šŸ¤”

Certainly not the death of the forum as a platform for discussion, that's for sure.

As long as there are people interested in talking to each other on this website, the social aspects will never fully die. You may have to look in other forum sections or be the change you want to see yourself by creating more threads and/or participating more on CD here

MAL draws me back every now and then, even if it ostensibly appears to be the equivalent of a dying grandpa in a sailor uniform hooked on life support. It pleases me to see old-timers still posting on these boards, which leads me to believe that there's still hope and a sense of community here. Weebs come and go, but friends, foes and acquaintance bros remain.

I still use the site frequently to keep my anime list up to date. I just don't chat on the forums much anymore. The site is definitely still useful as I've been using it for ages to keep my anime list up to date. Switching to anything else would be a pain as I'd have to update anything from scratch. lol

Pretty sure there's already a post about this that has been recently commented on. Anyway, the forum is 100% less popular than it was 10 years ago. I've been on this site for a long time. I don't know that the website in general is dying. It's very possible the website generates more traffic than it did 10 years ago. I'm too lazy to look that up. But back in the day, the forum was like the front page of Reddit. Tons and tons of activity every single minute. It has significantly died down. As for why, I don't know. The mods on the forum are fairly lenient and I don't see a lot of hostility.

I see you're asking around @TsutanaiFuun. As I said on another thread a few months ago, I've been a long time MAL user given that I had this account/profile in 2010, I can tell you that MAL was a lot more active in early to mid 2010's before you signed up for it. So I can't say if it's dead (apparently, it's not). But a lot of long time users since it's creation are probably not as active as they used to be.

Funny enough, between 2013 to I think 2018, I took a long break from MAL and the anime/manga fandom in general because I was very focused on K-pop/Hallyu (and anything South Korean pop culture related. And yes, I still am a K-pop fan alongside being a anime/manga fan since then). So I have no idea what happened to MAL too as a long time MAL user.

I do think that maybe when Anilist debuted and opened in 2013/2014, I guess it could've caused people to maybe close their MAL profiles/accounts or kept it dormant or use it as a backup database account? I don't know, I just created my Anilist profile last year, and there are things I like about Anilist that makes it just as valuable as MAL. But just because I created Anilist doesn't mean I'll give up and close my MAL profile (too many history and memories on this site).

It's also possible that there are MAL users that may have gotten married and have children and they probably left their accounts/profiles inactive and dormant because of commitment to being a parents (although there are active MAL users that chat on the MAL forum that are also parents), so maybe that's why MAL is not as busy or new generation taking over.

I don't know, I can't tell if MAL is less active or the users don't use the forum as much as they used to. Things change over the last 10 years, and well who knows. But I'm one of the long time users that is still active on MAL, and I'm not going away. That's all I can say.

It just feels less lively because how threads constantly get locked by arbitrary rules and the site has been taken over by very toxic ideologues.

always has been :]

on a serious note, it's true that MAL forums in particular used to be much more active in years past, but even now they're far from dead. i kinda chalk it up to the fact anime has become far more mainstream, you can talk about anime on almost any big social media platform nowadays, so the niche this community has to offer has kinda been made redundant

That could be true, but I do think that probably our long time former active fans probably got married, and have kids and probably limit or no longer use MAL due to commitment to their children (although I have seen active MAL forum user that are parents can still find time to go on MAL and talk on the forum).

I do agree ever since anime and manga has became more mainstream I guess niche exclusiveness appeal has gone away when anime became mainstream. Don't forget we got Anilist so we don't know how many MAL users may have migrated and abandoned (or left their MAL profile/accounts dormant, and save it as their backup). As I said on my previous post, I registered for Anilist last year.

So it's not that MAL is dying or near dead, it's just that the anime/manga fandom have come and go, and MAL users are no different.

On a level, yes. Newgens aren't as big on forums and message boards as those before them are. Less and less are willing to learn post-formatting CMS like BBCode or Markdown in order to make their profiles and forum posts look pretty or intricate. Sure, MAL's new 'modern' profile editor is neat and all but it still doesn't appeal too much to the newer generation.

Kids would and do prefer to post on Discord because they can get a quicker reaction from their online peers and buddies. It's a FOMO-tier problem. You can't ping people on forums, but you can on Discord.

But then the newgens find the trendy 'retro' thing and make it big again, the same as they are with 'retro' VHS style video filters and aesthetic edits. It's a phoenix.

Forums, in their base form are a dying race. The internet is slowly but surely deciding we need (in this metaphoric sense) one race, one goal. All that resist and make forums will slowly die off from member stagnation, and all that remain will get fused with other forums and message boards, but will eventually jump platforms and make accompanying Discords as to not stagnate as well, for they will be the last of their kind.

I used to be very active in the forums 10 years ago. It might have been a little more active then, but there's still many people talking here. There are still some interesting threads. I think it's just the wave of people who come and go. Some waves are larger or smaller than others.

apart from that, pretty much every online/ internet-based activity WAS much more active during the covid days; it's not just about MAL. And yeah about the same users posting nowadays, even I have experienced that. I've even said it in one of my posts that back during the lockdown with every single reload you'd get several new forum posts. Answering random questions on MAL forums was one of my favourite pastimes back then lol.
But i have to say, the creativity in these forum posts has fallen off. Back then there were really interesting and creative questions being asked. Now most of them are just generic or straight up trash.

@Mayahuel The comments are all saying different things so they're not very trustworthy.

I used archive and looked at casual discussion 10-11 years ago and it does appear to be more active, but otherwise it's all anecdotal. We need the site owner to chime in.

Even this thread is averaging 2 replies per day since I posted a week ago. That is evidence of regular activity by users in the forum. (More active than some discord servers that people have invited me to. haha) On average, say there are 9 other threads that are just about as active as this one, and that means you have 20 posts per day (10 threads x 2 post per day). Doesn't sound like a lot but then you do some math and that means 100 post every 5 days. 600 in a month. That would be a lot ot keep up with even if we halfed it (as maybe not ever post is relevant). Not to mention the people that chat directly to each other, and the users that just update their lists without using hte forums much.

I just watched .hack Sign and it was interesting to see how much they referenced the boards. "have you checked the boards lately? you are all over them. You are a wanted player." In the modern era, I wondered if that would be the equilvalent of being called out on twitter, in a youtube video, on a twitch stream, or most likely in a guild discord server.

I think the dying idea comes a lot from comparisons of what Mal used to be or what it should be. Hence, the posing of this question over and over again for the last twenty years. People do this a lot with games as the user base shrinks down. Funny to me as my first mmorpg, Everquest, is still playable today even tho people said it was dying as soon as WoW came out. But, its definitely still kicking and making some money for the company that owns it.

Well that is true @Emoney_1986. I like to also add that there are MAL users that had their account/profile dormant for quite a while even for many years and that user can log in to MAL after many years. I mean I'm going to cite this user, @Kanakirigoe as an example. This user had a MAL account/profile in Oct 2015, and yet it looks like this user account was dormant for a while and then he had to re-introduce himself on the Introduction section of MAL forum. So for anyone on MAL asking is this website and it's forum dead, I just gave you an example of a MAL user taking a break and leaving their profile/account dormant and haven't logged in until a few years later.

So we don't know how many MAL users on this website that have not logged in a long time could one day log in and just resume their anime/manga activities again.
