Setting aside the mixed reactions to last week's Episode 0 (which I recommend newcomers avoid), let's dive into Inio Asano's story.

ano and Lilas Ikuta, in typical DDDD fashion, deliver a banger OP and ED. They have yet to miss with this show.

Jeez, this kid is really into Mr. Mushroom here; you can clearly see the Doraemon inspiration. But that's the least weird thing in the first five minutes of this show. I mean, they show a whole spaceship, and these kids are just okay with it after three years. I'd still be freaked out if I woke up to a spaceship in the sky. As soon as the flashback hits, though, you can feel Asano's touch—whether it's the weird premise or the laughable character designs.

Back in the present day, the world is clearly off. The poor girl's mom is fully decked out in a COVID suit, in her own house no less. My girl just wants to play some games, man. Then there's her dad—poor guy. It's clear now that last week's Episode 0 happens much later in the story. At least this family has their priorities right; first thing they're doing is stocking up on toilet paper. But more concerning is a high schooler driving... ??? Okay, maybe that's the least of the worries in this messed-up world.

This definitely has the Asano feel to it. What the bigger picture is, we'll have to wait and see.

The use of dubtitles for the episode's subs bothered me, since the timings were off between speech and the text. And switching over to the dub instead, was that "The adults always say that everything has changed" voiceover missing in the dub too, or do I somehow have some weird setup that has rendered the dialogue inaudible?

I love this series and wanna see it animated, but man... It's getting some rough treatment if this is how it's gonna be

Finished the 1st episode, and what can I say, I'm not hooked or anything but this anime seems promising so I will keep watching it, it's a bit on the crazy side though, only time will tell how good this anime is, you can never judge a book by its cover but this anime seems to be high on opium.

I'm not particularly impressed with the Opening or Endings though but it kinda fits the high-on-opium kind of animes like this one I guess, I hope this anime gets good later on, I won't drop it or anything, this anime has plenty of chances to surprise me with something.

the actual first episode is here and damn they didn't animate the iconic panel from behind the title as it was, but i'm loving the visuals. kadode's a gamer girl, i expected ouran to sound a little more crazier for some reason but this is good lol, imo one thing that didn't translate well to the anime is ouran's drooling face in this episode, was just a bit weirdly animated. the goofy character designs and dialogue is great though.
invaders at the end and the world is ever so slowly going to shit while everyone's living about their normal lives, i like this. respect to takabatake as well.

@DeathToTastyDawn Start watching from episode 1. Skip episode 0 for now because it adapts some of the later parts of the manga (idk why).

I just want to start by saying that the opening is pure fanservice as a manga reader, and I love it, also the (MASSIVE manga spoiler)

I think the episode was great adaptation, the scene they added to the flashback is a little improvement I think will improve the more political storyline.
But more importantly-they adapted the characters very well, and it will be the most important thing for the adaptation to succeed

I also really like the animation style, I think it feats the show even if it isn't the best I saw.
The only complaints I have are that the moving into and out of flashbacks would confuse me a little if I wasn't manga reader, so I want to ask anime onlies, what did you feel about the handling of.the flashback?
And also like @ryzxgum said, I really wanted the title card

DDDD episode 1 is here, the official start of the manga being adapted and it was a solid little premiere. Find it very interesting that the two voice actresses in charge of Ouran and Kadode's roles are singers, it's interesting to say the least and hey, the opening and ending shown in the episode are good.

After watching this, I'm still not quite sure episode 0 was needed early on but it is what it is, not that it is a bad idea to have an episode like that as the start in concept but given how close that is to the actual ending, still a bizarre choice compared to something like how Heavenly Delusion balanced its two storylines. That titlecard looks really sick in the manga and while I wish something could have done to make it look cool in anime form (which is possible), it's fine. The rest of the episode was slower paced but maintained an interesting, weird feel to it that works with this series. Good backgrounds so far as well, and characters look fairly solid while maintaining the Asano element that's for sure. Shading's good. Soundtrack has a lot of promise as well, which makes sense for a series like this. Ouran's personality does shine early on compared to the others for the start, and the episode does establish some decent chemistry that she has with Kadode.

So yeah, still not quite sure how the adaptation will turn out after the bizarre start last week but there is promise, just needs more time for the story to really get itself going further and have more mysteries around the world and characters pile up.

Is it me or the official translation in subtitles is kinda trash? They take too many liberties and switch lines constantly. Hopefully some fansub group picks it up since it's too hard to keep up with differences between the audio and the text.

First of all, this is my first episode of this anime, I avoid ep0.
This seems like a re-interpretation of the classic Doraemon, but it's too soon to say if it's gonna be good or not. But I can definitely say the production is high quality.

This was great and an obviously better starting point for those unfamiliar with the manga. Still dont know why they decided to drop ep0 last week.

Anyway I feel like they shoud have swapped OP with the ending, but is just a minor nitpick

I thought this was supposed to be a movie? Why did they randomly start a series? I didn't even know about this until the first episode came out. I also wasn't aware of Episode 0. It's probably good that I wasn't since everyone is saying it contains spoilers. Not sure why the heck they're calling it Episode "0" then... Maybe it'll make sense later. Hopefully, the episode will be included in the 18 actual episodes.

It's weird that they started airing this near the end of the Spring season instead of the beginning of the Summer season. I think it has to do with the unusual episode count. It's longer than a single cour but not really 2 cours. So, it makes sense. Even tho the lack of marketing is a bit frustrating I'm glad that they turned the movies into a series at all. If it was just the movies then we'd probably have to wait a year for the movies to become available online like how it was a few years ago.

Another thing that frustrates me is the subtitles. It didn't take long for me to realize that these are dubtitles as they don't sync with the dialogue and what's being said in the Japanese dialogue is different from the translation. Why did Crunchyroll do this?

Anyway, all the caveats aside. This series looks interesting. The only reason I'm watching this is because it's an adaptation of an Inio Asano manga. Not like I read his works but since his works are popular I needed to check this out since it's probably the first anime adaptation of his work that I'm aware of. I'm still very confused about what's happening but I'm guessing it'll be explained slowly.

@Chipp12 The subs are dubtitles, literally 1:1 the dub dialogue and timing. Proper subs seem to be missing entirely, either by accident (as there's other errors with the episode), or in purpose (perhaps driven lazyness or not enough time or something)

Been excited for this anime adaptation and the first episode was to my liking. Interesting setting/theme with good animation and world building with interesting characters as well. As someone who loves the alien ufo stuff this is quite exciting for me. Though it doesn't seem like there will be much focus on that and instead more focus on the characters instead but we'll see.

Was quite surprised to see Ano and Lilas Ikuta on the voice cast but they did good job voicing the characters in this episode, specially Ano. Both OP & ED songs are good as well. The mother is one of those cult member type but her new husband seems like a nice guy? Not sure but hope so. Ending scene with the mini ufo crash and two aliens hurt? Our protags gonna meet them? Btw there were some flashback/forward mixed in the episode which took a second for me to get but I enjoy this kind of thing. Btw forgot to mention but that manga is a doraemon ripoff lol. Nice reference, might be important to the plot I think.

The subs for this felt very off btw. Some lines were translated poorly, it had similar meaning but wasn't what the girls were saying at all.

Episode 1 - Dead Dead Demon Deeded Destruction
So, here we go! Finally a real start to it all! The "prequel" episode was quite a confusing start even as a manga reader and left me feeling dissatisfied with the quality of the production and how it was essentially an infodump episode.

Here, I finally feel like I got what I was waiting for! The animation is great, the colours are vibrant and the character designs are goofy and manga accurate. Honestly it feels weird to see all of this finally move, its a great feeling :). This episode feels like it was made with a lot of love for the source material, as it nails the jokes and the world of this manga.

The cinematography really stood out to me, as it highlighted the important moments well and served well both as a spectacle and just to pin down the mundane feel of the world that is essentially on the brink of a collapse. I loved how the CGI moments were handled as well. Just great atmosphere overall.

Also the OP and ED both fit the style really well. The opening has some CGI shots that look like they're straight out of an old dddd AMV that someone made on YouTube. It made me feel quite nostalgic.

Overall I loved it, it captures the magic of the manga quite well and I'm excited to see where it goes from here :)

@Kampos I fully agree, I was so hyped to see the title card animated. I was so sad to see that they did not use the title card with both perspectives (or at all in this case). That artistic direction was what hooked me in the manga. I kind of hoped that they would show the title card just like how text was used in the first episode of Kill la Kill. Wanted to find an example for this on YouTube but sadly couldn't find it.

The onomatopeia was used though, but in an very subtle manner. Somewhere in this episode there was a small pool of water shown in combination with the sound of the UFO, and the hiragana-like symbols were shown vaguely in the reflection. Easy to miss though.

Great first episode nonetheless. Hyped to see the rest of the story animated.

Pretty good until now. Very good direction, animation, voice acting and visuals. Not quite fond of the opening and ending music, but the rest of the music during the episodes is very inspired and help build the strange atmosphere.

@Jordy3D I know right, CR didn't even bother to tweak the dubtitle timings. So we have a mess of overly localized lines not matching with what being said then we have the dubtitle being off with its timing.

this is one of my favorite manga of all time so I'm just happy it's finally getting animated and I think so far the adaptation has been good, this is a very day-to-day life focused alien invasion story with a very unique Asano-ish vibe to it and I think it's working so far

Wow the OP and ED are very strong. We needed this episode we need more background details of what is going on before we jump into the main plot. It's crazy how fucked up things got. Also the mom is lowkey giving the Covid freak out vibes with how she was acting.(No, I'm not anti-vax so relax.). It is clear to me both young girls didn't have a ton of love given to them at a young age.
