Do you think the 2010s is the best decade for anime? Or is the 2020s already better and will eventually surpass the 2010s?

the true answer is that there is no best decade it just comes down to your personal opinion unfortunately
which is the 80's-90's there's no other answer

Personally, I prefer 2000s to 2010s.
Anime in 2008 are especially my favourite such as Aria 3rd season, Spice And Wolf, Clannad AS, Toradora and ef 2nd season!

Yes absolutely

Or is the 2020s already better and will eventually surpass the 2010s?

Only for 12 year olds who twerk for tanjiro and ship him with nezuko instead of doing homeworks

At this point it probably is. 2020s could definitely surpass it but we're not even halfway through it so it's way too early to say.

Yeah.

Best Decade for Anime:

1) 2010s
2) 2020s (too early anyways)
3) 1980s
4) 2000s
5) 1990s/1970s
6) 1960s

My ranking so far is 2000s > 90s > 2010s > 70s > 2020s > 80s so no. I also don't think it'll surpass the 2010s at this rate.

1) More Anime produced than previous decades, I think.
2) More Anime starting different trends, AoT: survival. SAO: isekai. Re Zero/Konosuba/DanMachi: weak hero. Goblin Slayer/Shield Hero: revenge hero. Mirai Nikki: yandere. Madoka Magica: more dark mahou shoujo.
3) Compared to previous decades, the style is more consistent from the start to the end of the decade especially if we compared to 2000s Anime which styles in Early 00s and Late 00s are completely different.
4) Fixed several things I disliked sometimes from the 2000s era and previous decades like too many episodes barely advancing the plot (more than 2 cours) and better trends as I mentioned (some trends I like more or less from the 00s for example are harem/ecchi by Late 90s/Early 00s Anime and some absurd/horror trends from Early 00s Anime, the moe trend isn't really interesting without supernatural elements and I can't stand some 00s Anime romance).
5) I was born in 2000 so my last childhood years and all my teens years were in the 2010s, so I'm biased to that era, especially early 2010s. Stuff I watched when I was quite young in the 2000s don't count since I didn't know they were Anime. I don't know if you felt the same since you and me are almost the same age.

I think it's too early to say for sure, but at the same time, I'm heavily biased and would absolutely say that the 2020's are the best decade for anime because of Stone Ocean alone.

That said though, the 2010's are when literally all of my favorites started, so 2020's aside (since, as I already said, it's too early to judge), I definitely would say that the 2010's was the best decade for anime so far.

this decade is equally good i think. we are still getting banger animes. there was no "bad" or "good" decade. both good and bad animes will keep releasing. people just like to think 2010s were better because it gives them a nostalgic feeling as that's when most people got into anime.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

As good 2010s were for the anime 2020s are much better.
Since anime has only gotten better and better over time I expect this trend to continue well into the future.

If we abstract from subjectivity and pretend to be objective, then it depends on different issues. The main difference is that studios are now giving the green light to many at least potentially good shows, which is why today's viewers have a much wider choice and access to a wide variety of anime than before. But as we all know, quantity does not mean quality.

I would agree that the 2010s was the best decade for anime. However, I may be biased, as I am nostalgic for it, having grown up and gotten into anime in the 2010s. The 2020s are off to a mediocre start, but does seem to be starting to get a little bit better as of late.

Period from 2006 to 2012 was the best.

It was improving until 2012 but then...

Yes. Without a doubt.

Anyone claiming <2010s was better is either nostalgic or has pretty niche taste.

Even by the mid 2000s, shows were still 4:3 aspect ratio, 480p, and reused fight animations. Music, well Sawano wasn't even on the scene before 2010 and most of Yuki Kajiura's best works are post 2010. Anisongs are significantly more profitable, involved, and popular now so take that as you will. (Sakuga and VFX are also incomparably better than before).
---

Will 2020s be better? Personally, no. But depends on what you mean. Quality of productions will probably be higher. But I don't think there'll be mega hits like AOT, OPM, SAO, Demon Slayer, NGNL, Steins;Gate, etc.

- Mangas (action + popular) are swiped up by Mappa for slightly above average productions that all look more or less similar, which honestly pisses me off.
Any other manga are mostly just harem romcoms that go on endlessly adapted by random studios that pump out 1 cour every 2 years.

- Light novel adaptations have settled on mostly (isekai) 1 cour adaptations from random studios with average productions fumbling pacing.

- Visual novel adaptations are basically dead, unless Atri is a major hit and aniplex decides to go all in. Which I really hope they do.

- Originals are also pretty much dead.

Jun Maeda is gone now, who else was actively making tear jerkers? Madhouse is dead to me (and everyone at this point). Wit is kinda just doing their own niche creative stuff. Ufotable, Shaft, Kyoani, Sunrise, Whitefox/Bind don't produce often enough or enough variety to really note. So it's really just A-1/Cloverworks, Mappa, and maybe IG? Except all Mappa shows look and sound the same.

-----
Hella long but,

Imo ~2006 -> ~2016 was the golden period where we saw 16:9, digital animation, improvements in CG, VFX, & Editing, all while studios were experimenting on what to produce. They banked on isekai/fantasy, romcom, and action sooo....

Now we have rushed isekai/fantasy, flimsy shounen actions, and neverending romcoms. I'd be surprised if we even get 1 emotional, psychological, historical, philosophical, or serious scifi show per year.

To me, it makes no sense to give 2010s the best decade. I'll explain why :
It's not because some anime started genres that it's logically better. In fact i think that the anime inspired by them should be better because they can take only the good thing in them...

Some would say : "there is no best decade, all depends on you"
But i think that last decade running will always be the best decade and end of 2020s we will say that it was the best decades. Just for instance, we will have the end of some key animes (kny, snk, bleach ...) And probably the start of many others. The industry keeps improving so the average quality as well. (Btw "no big hit in 2020" if kny movies isn't a big hit then there are no big hit at all lmao, and don't go like "the first season started in 2010s it doesn't count", yes it does)

That's just my feelings but to say that every anime of 2020s feels the same is pretty damn stupid. Just take slice of life genre : it has totally been revamp with anime like spyxfamily or kaguya sama.
"There are less original anime" ? If you don't watch netflix or movies maybe you can think that but with those two combines i'm not even sure...
Last thing, for the better (or the worst for purist) animes are getting more and more mainstream but that will lead just to more diffusions (instead of watching it illegally) and more money sent to studios, therefore better quality/animes

Tldr : stupid debate, objectively last decade better quality

Nope, Its the 90s.

1. Thats when the Anime Started to broke through into west and slowly but surely pushed the industry  to became a global thing.

2.Majority of the anime that shaped the industry, nfluened and evoluitonzed it came like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Perfect Blue, Sailor Moon, Hunter X Hnter, Yu Yu Hakusou, Serial Experiments Lain, Trigun..

3. It was the rising decade of  Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon which will end up became some of the biggest franchise in the world.

4. It was the rising decade of the directors like Hayao Miyazaki, Shiniciro Watanabe, Mamrou Oishi and Satoshi Kon.

end of the day, which is the best decade is subjective but 90s was the most important and the influential decade for animes.

2020's will probably be the best decade for anime. I'm almost 100% sure of it. The ultimate reason is because anime itself is at it's most popular, at least worldwide. If you think of it from a business perspective, the more a medium can sell, the more they invest. That makes the production better overall, and it makes more talented individuals seeing the anime industry as one to work in. More stories using anime as their storytelling medium will get multiple seasons as a result, and it will look better as well. When you look at the best anime of certain years of the past, usually they're certain stories that were given amazing treatment. Now, there are average stories with amazing treatment, as well as amazing stories with amazing treatment. Stuff like Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop are absolutely fantastic anime, but they didn't have to compete with much in there time compared to the current generation of anime. That's not to say that those anime couldn't compete with todays anime, because they absolutely can. The bottom line is that since anime has gotten more popular, the quality has gone up, and the amount of talent has invested more into it.

No, if I had to pick any individual single decade, I'd pick the 2000s decade, considering the fact that:

1.) Four of my top five series of all time, the top four, are all from the 2000s (2000, 2004, 2002, and 2006)

and

2.) 2006, again if forced to choose, is probably the individual year I'd single out as the best for anime

It also helps that the late 90s and early 2000s are also just the most both authentically nostalgic and retroactively nostalgic for me compared to any other period. Sometimes when watching, I love to imagine what I was doing at any given point in time when a particular series aired within this era, long before I knew about the existence of either it or the entirety of anime as a whole in actual life.

i don't feel qualified to answer this, even regarding my own personal preference.

the reason for that being, that i watched relatively few anime from other decades. of course i went back to watch some classics and beloved or acclaimed shows from previous decades, or maybe watched some of them in real time as a kid, but the vast majority of what i watched is from the 2010s, so i don't think it's fair to call it the best decade, when i watched a much smaller sample size from the 2000s, the 90's and almost none prior that.

I don’t have the most educated response to this question, but I have a preference for watching newer things in all respects including anime
so by the end of the 2020s I assume I’ll think of it as the best decade for anime, but I would give it to the 2010s right now

Each person have their own favorite decade. Usually it's a decade in which certain person were young. Not necessarily because animes were better back then, but simply because of nostalgic warm feelings felt towards them. Some might choose a different road and, in example, choose their favorite decade by picking up the one with dominant art style they feel was the best one ever, or by using other factors.

As for me, I think the best anime decades were 1990s and 2010s.
