It's like comparing Full Metal Alchemist and Brotherhood. Both shows have pros and cons and fans stan for either one. I would recommend 2011 because even with the censoring, you get a complete story from beginning to end. Not even the HXH manga can give you that.

I got into HXH with the 1999 OVA's for greed island final. The story never continued past there if you watch 1999. But those Yorknew 1999 OVA's are on another level. So watch the Yorknew OVA's for 1999 and if you like what you see, give 2011 a shot to see how everything got there.

I like the 1999 version mainly because of the somber mood, dark atmosphere and immaculate shot composition of the action scenes.

If we're comparing only the common adapted material I think 1999 is just ever so slightly better. It was made right before the switch to digital and so the people working on it were masters of cell animation. The tone is also arguably closer to the manga and the aesthetic is less generic than the new anime. Also the 1999 adaptation has some extra filler episodes which are honestly really good for filler content e.g. an extra stage to the hunter exam. I don't mean to say that the new adaptation is bad or anything, just that I honestly prefer the old one.

I don't know and I'll never understand the hype behind this anime as if hunter hunter is on the same level as Gintama, bleach and one piece..
It's behind by a country mile..

Yu yu Hakusho is much better

I tried watching the 1999 version, but failed. The 2011, I thought was an incredible long-running shounen series.

2011 is slightly better because 1999 has some very mediocre filler episodes and scenes. Much less than other long running battle shounen, but since we have the possibility I'll gladly avoid watching Menchi and Buhara chitchatting while having dinner.

why are you comparing 2 bad anime?
well, at least the 1999 version has better sakuga fights but in the end, both are damn right unwatchable because of the overall idiotic plot and happenings

If you are watching it for the first time I would suggest the 2011 one.

I'd disagree that Brotherhood gives you the full story, it gives you the canonical ending, yes. But it's beginning suffers quite a bit, assuming you've already seen 03, it rushes through proper introductions and doesn't come together as smoothly. HxH 2011 has the same problem, it assumes you've already seen 99, and fucks up the introduction to the world and characters. I'm not a huge fan of either new iterations, they lose a lot of the heart and soul of the originals.

If you are new to HxH, I would recommend 2011. If you have plenty of time to spend, watch 1999 first, then 2011.

2011 is a must, 1999 is optional but encouraged.

Whichever you want to watch first, please DO NOT SKIP THE OP AND ED, even though you are binge watching. Trust me, you won't regret it in the long term.

After watching the anime(s), read the manga and catch up until the latest chapter.

Direction: 1999 by a good margin
Artistic direction, photography, color department: 1999 by a gigantic margin
OST: Both good, i'd say 2011 by a small margin
Character design: I'd say both are pretty good as well, i personally feel like the 1999 one is more adapt to the story so i'd chose that
Screenplay: I'd say defenitely 1999, the fillers aren't a problem at all and they're pretty good while the actual canon scenes aren't censored or butchered like in 2011 version (especially in the hunter exam arc with all its censorship), that also got a way too fast pacing
Animations: While i know a lot of people are like super-convinced 2011 version has "objectively better animations" or whatever the actually best animated sequences are all in 1999 version, like all the Norio Matsumoto, Furuhashi and Matsushima animated scenes, while the strong aspect of the 2011 was being more constant in general but it didn't really reached the same higher levels. So i'd say they're overall comparable but i prefer the 1999 version for being more authorial
Completion: Obviously 2011 (duh)
I don't think i even need to specify now which one i prefer, the 1999 by far (i actually don't like AT ALL the 2011 version adaptation-wise), too bad this last point, despite being the only strong preference for the 2011 version, weighs a lot for people that are anime-only and intend to see only one version, so it's always hard for me to give a suggestion about HxH

This website is filled with 2011 fans so its gonna be skewed towards that show. But tbh, I have only really seen the 2011 most of the way through, but from what I've seen this really is the better adaptation. The 99 one uses cel animation, the backgrounds look incredible, the usage of lighting is incredible, the characters feel better written, Kite is introduced at the beginning so what happens later feels less out of place, and I just love the more realistic leaning look.

1999 without a doubt, as others already have mentioned, thje direction and atmosphere are perfectly nailed over there. The shots are more ambigious as well.

Mans walked in, spit facts, and just left.

I will never understand why people dick ride this show so much.

The 99 version so far is far superior, visually and narratively. I actually kind of enjoy the show now. It's visually a masterpiece, and although some of the characters are still kind of weak, it's overall still the better experience.

I think the "fucked up" introduction is more interesting than the original. If my 1st exposure to HxH had been the 1999 anime, I would never have finished it.

Yeah, I prefer the 1999 version. The traditional ink and paint and colour palette of the 1999 version just makes it timeless to me, with more attention to detail [though Greed Island OVAs is in digital ink and paint, sadly]. Hunter Exam arc and Yorknew City arc were done better in the 1999 version, and Greed Island arc isn't rushed like in the 2011 version. Music is better in the 1999 version. The tone/atmosphere is better in 1999 and feels more like the manga. Kite is actually shown at the start, even if it is a flashback. I only think Heaven's Arena was done better in the 2011 version because that actually showed the full fight between Hisoka and Kastro. In 1999, characters having coloured auras actually ended up being correct as the manga would later mention auras having colour. 2011 also fucked up by giving Kurapika's teacher a name, before Togashi finally named him in the manga Izunabi. Everything is also too bright in the 2011 version, which I don't like, especially when it's nighttime.

1999 version also decided to show how the fight between Kurapika and Hisoka went down, unlike the manga and 2011 anime, which never showed the full fight, and I appreciate that the studio showed it. I also like how it's less censored at times, like the Killua vs Johness fight, shown in all its uncensored glory, and just like in the manga. I also like how the Yorknew City arc lasts longer in the 1999 version [26 episodes in 1999 vs 22 episodes in 2011] because it's my favourite arc. I also prefer Killua's design in the 1999 version.

The 1999 version is darker and edgier than the 2011 version most of the time, but the 2011 version is superior since it covers a lot more manga material.

The 99 is a better adaptation but you will eventually have to watch 2011 to see the arcs that were never adapted.
