Why is the "Little sister jealous of their brother dating someone" so common in anime?

I've seen this a handful of times, Most recently in We Never Learn, but i've seen it other times. Like Oreimo.

It comes up quite a few times in romance anime, if the character has siblings, he usually has a little sister who's jealous.

What's with this whole little sister thing?
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

That's what the author fantasises about in their free time most likely.
I probably regret this post by now.

They're just upset i guess that onii chan is giving all his attention to someone else and they're trying to take him away. So imoto chan thinks she won't have anyone to depend on and feels insecure..
Girls love attention..
It's also girly thinking and female nature to get envious of other women... Imoto thinking onii chan thinks his new girlfriend is hotter and cuter than her so she's mad

It could suggest many things. It could be cute in the sense of the little sister being jealous that her brother isn't spending as much time with her as a friend. Or it could be a fetish. You never really know when it comes to anime.

The author wants to attract fans who likes that kind of character stereotype. The author likes little sisters.

I've actually seen a lot of the reverse. Where we had harem-kun always given by the author, the personality of overprotecting his sister (and sometimes they're not blood related wink-wink)

Because it's something that would appeal to a lot of people as it showcases both taboo and being an object of desire. Those two have high demand in our world, be it anime community or not. Not to mention that it is made to look digestible since the taboo element comes originally from a point of innocence, as the sister is little and doesn't know about how the world works and that's why she loves and wants to get married to her older brother. It's a cheap formula that works for romance writers who would be better off doing something else than writing

Not even just hentai tho; American porn is flooded with step-sister and mother shit.

Yes, but last I checked this is an anime site and this is an anime discussion. So just like Bruno, we don't talk about American shows here.

Many Japanese stories have creators with imouto complexes, and it makes for easy humor.

Maybe because most japanese people nowadays don't even have any siblings so the idea of one having a crush on you lacks the instinctual ick factor of those of us who do. Plus the idea that someone feels so strongly for you that they're willing to break taboos is gratifying. And then there's the d'aww-ness of an innocent crush.

And...you know, degeneracy. That too.

better question. Does it really matter? it's anime. Not real life. If it offends you, then you are in the wrong hobby.

Time for you to go back to twitter.

Because the little sister with some exceptions is usually a good choice over say the childhood friend or first girl to the best choice (Oreimo is an exception as Kirino was the worst choice) and she knows it.

Because people who grow up with no sisters think those who are , can have sexual or romantic thoughts towards them , which in their defense can happen with mentally deranged people , but in normal cases siblings only feel platonic love at most and indifferent at the least towards each other .

A lot of japanese people appear to be only childs and can't imagine what it's really like to have siblings. They imagine it as some erotic fantasy or so.

Option 1: Imouto doesn't want the attention that Onii-chan gives her to someone else. Sibling time is special, you only grow up together once, you know! Cute, innocent little sister wanting attention trope.
"I want Onii-chan to spend time with me and only me! Come on, Onii-chan, let's play together- but don't invite your mean girlfriend!"

Option 2: Imouto is young and innocent and doesn't understand how the world works or why things are considered taboo. Innocent "kids will be kids" trope.
"I love Onii-chan! When I grow up, I want to marry Onii-chan! I don't want that mean girl to take him away from me!"

Option 3: Imouto wants to fuck Onii-chan and is a firm believer that incest, is truly wincest. Author-sama has a fetish~!
"As long as there's love, it doesn't matter if he is my brother, right? Onii-chan, why have a girlfriend when you have a sister? Onii-chan is the best, unlike any other man! My body is for Onii-chan only! Use me however you'd like, Onii-chan! Fill me with your seed! I want to bear your children~!"

So in conclusion: It's cute, OR cute and hot and sexy and oh- I think I just came.

Or just characters who get in the way and be way too annoying

^^^ e.g. Nisekoi, the little sister was almost annoying as the leads refusing to confess/open the damn lock therefore dragging out the series.

Because japanese people really want to fuck their sisters.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Long story short either to replicate what it would be like to have a younger sibling since its usually one kid in Japan these days or coomer wet dreams.

Pretty much this. Because authors have an obsession of being the Mary Sue of their reality, a reality in which even though they have a girlfriend or love interest, even their sister can't stand the idea of them not being single. When in reality, no little sister would give a flying fart, but it turns them on to imagine that each and every girl is crying herself to sleep for not getting to be waifu, including sister and mom (Kimi to Boku has a whole running gag about the mom trying to date her son).

It's called a brother-complex. It can sometimes occur in family units missing a father figure (or both parents) where a girl has developed feeling of strong dependence on an older male sibling who helped raise her. Some psychologists atribute it to be a misappropriated transfer of an Electra complex (a girls romantic love for her father) to the oldest male responsible for taking care of her instead. The subject may experience fear and insecurity that the person will be taken away from her and she will be all alone or even view the other woman as a rival for her own romantic feeling towards him.

Is it that common? I think the reverse is more common though. It's usually the older brother that's overprotective of his little sister.

my general guess is that dudes are writing it and are writing every single female character to be in love with themselves, whoops i mean the protagonist.... because despite his blandness, he gets all the women

Well I'm using the term overprotective kinda loosely, but there's Oregairu (Hikigaya won't let Komachi get married), Sket-dance (Agata is angered when he found that his little sister is in love with Bossun), the Monogatari series (Araragi is kinda against the idea of both his sisters have a boyfriend of their own) and OreImo (Kyousuke doesn't want Kirino to have a boyfriend).

Huh, now that I've written some, it may not be as many as I thought there was.

I mean...Fiction is just a way of showing shit that's either impractical, impossible or frowned upon in real life....With animation, even more so than live action. I'd argue it'd be far more awkward to watch a live action series or movie where some young girl is going after her brothers junk. To me, the same thing happening in an anime isn't nearly as bad.

That being said, I do find those characters extremely annoying.
