The story features a lesbian romance from the start, which is one of the key drivers of the plot. Sorawo's initial motivation to explore the Otherside is to have a private "playground" away from other people, but after meeting Toriko and spending time with her, she starts to see her as special, and wants to "play" on the Otherside together with her and nobody else. Toriko initially goes to the Otherside to find her missing mentor, but she's the one who develops feelings for Sorawo first, and is excited to continue their adventure even after giving up on rescuing her mentor. Sorawo has a lot of insecurities to work through until she is ready to fully reciprocate in (N)vol. 8. The romantic development hits all of the key romance plot beats (Meet Cute, "No Way", etc.), with confessions of love, several kisses, and a sex scene as the climax of (N)vol. 8. The final act of each of the first three volumes is punctuated with a romantic moment, while (N)vol. 4 and 5 have whole arcs (4 of the 8 "files") focused on the relationship, and (N)vol. 8 focuses on it in its entirety. Toriko's first confession is at the end of (N)vol. 3, which the manga reached in (M)vol. 12. In addition to all this, Sorawo is frequently distracted in her narration by Toriko's beauty, and Toriko flirts with Sorawo at every opportunity, growing bolder and more physical over time. This rarely lets up, as e.g. in (N)vol. 1-5 they only get separated in 4 "files" out of 19 (in two of these one needs to rescue the other, and in the other two they're avoiding each other or fighting). The pair's relationship to each other evolves with their relationship to the Otherside, which seems to communicate with humans through fear. For example, the contents of the entire (N)vol. 8 up to the sex scene is about finally getting to the root of what each woman fears about being together with the other, and only through facing those fears do they get to be intimate and enter the next stage of their relationship. Every arc has a strange phenomenon as its main topic, and for that arc it is the sex itself, which becomes a literally mind and body altering experience. The romance is definitely a slow burn, but this story is still very much focused on the above lesbian relationship. The Otherside is too dangerous for either of them to explore alone, and the abilities that allow them to interface with the Otherside compliment each other (Sorawo's eye and Toriko's hand). Their relationship is also irreversibly shaped by the Otherside's influence. For this pair, exploring the Otherside is not just an escape from mundane life, but also a mutual (though extreme) hobby. One that forces them to rely on each other to maintain their sanity, and in turn one they often rely on to stay connected to each other. And there are more relationships between women that shape the story. The closest the series has to a main antagonist, Toriko's mentor, is an "alpha female" who before she disappeared, exploited women by seducing them. Two in the main cast are her victims (including Toriko), and another barely avoided it. A fourth one (a school girl) became so obsessed with her that she built a cult in her name. And then, two supporting characters form a second lesbian not-yet-couple, with feelings so clearly mutual that even Sorawo can see it. |
